Liora's POV The CEO in front of me is either crazy or insane. Same thing? Yes, but he's double. I've never associated with any rich people, aside from Ronan, in all my 25 years of life. Then how is he expecting me to respond to his very ridiculous question? This has to be a prank. “Mr. Valesca. I don't know who you think you are and why you think you can make me leave home and come here to entertain this silliness. But I'd have you know it's not funny.” “....” I huff when the man remains silent. Instead of acknowledging me, he picks up his pen and starts signing some documents. Hell no. I'm not staying here and letting him insult me like this. Turning on my heels, I start walking toward the door when someone finally speaks. I whirl around fast, noticing it's not him but a male reporter on the TV. He places the remote on his desk, leans back in his seat, and pulls off his tie. “We are at the house of Nicholas Romero, where the 65-year-old CEO of Romero Corporation is undergoing treatment after being poisoned two nights ago at the gala held to celebrate the merging of the Romero Fuel Corporation and the Valesca Energy Group.” I gape, my mouth parting like the Red Sea, but no words come out. Poisoned... how is this even possible? “.... w-what?” “The Valescas have said nothing so far about what could have happened, and the Romeros have still not pressed charges. What could be going on? And who would attempt to poison Mr. Romero? Stay tuned as we unravel more of the mystery.” Silence descends on the room as the TV is switched off by the assistant who brought me here. I had been so lost in thought I didn't notice when he came in. “Miss Wilder. I'm sure you don't need any more explanations for this.” I don't. It makes sense already. No wonder they had me come here with a lawsuit. My company catered the event. Whatever happened, I'm trapped in the middle. “I didn't do it. None of my employees would do anything like this. Please believe me," my voice cracks at the end of the sentence. Evren Valesca, for the first time in minutes, finally pays attention to me. He glances at me, tilting his head to the side as if trying to study me well. His intense gaze makes me shiver. Hopefully, none of them notice. “Miss Wilder. There's no need to try defending yourself. You cooked, my guest ate, and now he's fighting for his life.” He doesn't say anything further. It seems he's a man of few words. Taking that to my advantage, I start pleading. “Mr. Valesca. I know exactly what you mean. But I can assure you, I had nothing to do with this.” “What proof do you have then, Miss Wilder? The judge won't listen without seeing evidence.” My mind starts buzzing. “Maybe it's something else he ate or drank. The party was at night. Mr. Valesca, there's no way Mr. Romero couldn't have eaten something before that.” When he nods, I let out a smile. Phew, he believes me. Yay! Now I can go home in peace. “Thank you so much, sir. I knew you'd believe me. I should get going now. My daughter will be waiting. Nice meeting you, sir.” "The cops are still outside, right, Levi?" "Yes, sir, they are waiting for her outside." I freeze in my spot, my heartbeat rising. Cops? “What cops?” "The cops that will be taking you to jail. You don't just try to kill an important person and think you'd go free, do you?" He speaks, pursing his lips. My eyes involuntarily land on them. I gulp, turning away fast as I try to prevent the thoughts rising in my mind. I can't believe in a moment like this, I am distracted by his body. He's a gorgeous man, no doubt. With a body women will fight for, the most intoxicating scent ever, and his smooth jawline. My throat clogs as I remember that I'd kissed him before. "I didn't do anything. Why would cops want to take me away?" "Ms. Wilder, when you walked in here, I thought you were very intelligent, but now all I see is someone really dumb. Or were you just pretending? You really think we believe that you didn't poison him when he ate your food at the party, and the doctors have confirmed that it was indeed from that night. Trust me, you will have a long, long time in jail. Call the cops in, Levi." As Levi pulls out his phone, I hit it, and it falls to the ground with a loud clank. "What the hell? Why did you...?" I push past him and toward Evren's desk, slamming my hands on it. Pain shoots up my wrist, but I bite back a wince. Ouch. "You cannot be serious. I have a little daughter. You can't lock me up for something I didn't do." I tell him, my heart pounding so loud, I am sure they can hear it. He doesn't respond but rather raises a brow at me. "Please, sir,” my voice drops to a low whisper. “I haven't done anything. I would never. I can't go to jail." Tears fill my eyes, and I struggle to blink them back, but one slips down. Evren faces away from me for a few seconds. Then, when he turns back, his sharp grey eyes land on mine. "I will help you out, but I do hope you know you are going to pay me for it. The Romeros were already about to press charges, but I told them I would look into it. I am going to take care of everything. You have nothing to worry about. Levi, give her the documents." My brain freezes. What documents is he talking about? "Yes, sir, right away," Levi says as he walks toward the counter in the corner and picks up a file with a pen on it. "Here you go, miss. You have to sign here and here." Once I take a look at the title of the documents, it all makes sense to me. I should have known. They had to blackmail me. This is blackmail. All tears forgotten, I square my shoulders and give him my fiercest glare, making his lips curl. “Are you this desperate, Mr. Valesca? There was no poisoning. You're blackmailing me. Are you for real? I don't want to be a surrogate for an arrogant asshole like–” "Funny how you think you have much of a choice. But it's okay. If you really want Selena to be out there without a mother, while her mother is in jail, then you are free to walk out that door without signing. But we both know you won't, right?" I grip the pen and paper so tight, wishing I could rip it to pieces or maybe turn the pen into a sword and stab him between those beautiful eyes. Such an asshole. Bringing my daughter into this. He knows I would have to be his surrogate or go to jail for something I didn't do. But I am a Wilder. We are the strongest family on earth. There is no way I am going down without a fight. If he wants me to be his surrogate, I don't care if he is blackmailing me into it. He would have to do something as well for me. “Okay, Mr. Valesca. You win.” I flash him a bright smile. I notice his eyes narrowing as he exchanges a worried glance with his assistant. “I am going to sign these documents. But I also have a condition.”34 Liora's POV It is only when Marek clears his throat behind me that I finally detach myself from his brother’s body where I'd been hanging onto like a leech. Only I don't do it softly, but in my embarrassed state, I push him with a lot of strength. He staggers backward, almost falling if not for the wall behind him which he uses to support himself. Oops! I smile sheepishly. Marek chuckles. Evren glares. “Damn woman, I should have just died earlier if I knew you'd try to murder me out here like this.” “Oh, come on, brother. Don't tell me it's that little push that has you whining like an old lady. Be a man,” Marek teases his already grumpy brother. Somehow, their banter brings a small smile to my lips, as my mind runs back to my own sister. Corinne. It's been ages since we spoke. All because she has to hide to talk to me. I'm glad she's going to college under the guise of a scholarship. I'm paying. I hope Dad never finds out. Or else he could do something terrible to eith
33 Liora's POV My feet hitting hard on the hospital tiled floor brings the attention of the nurses and doctors towards me. Only when they see that it's not a patient being rushed in do they turn their eyes away from Arianna and me. I rush to the receptionist, placing my trembling hands on the counter as I wait impatiently for her to finish her call and get to me. “How can I help—” “My husband is admitted here.” My words tumble out in a rushed breath. “Please, where is Evren Valesca?” At the name, her hand freezes on the keyboard, eyes slowly lifting to my face. She turns to face her colleague, who is also looking at me from head to foot. Ignoring their gazes, I open my mouth to tell her to give me the information I'm asking about when I see Levi coming out from a hallway with a private label on it. He is on the phone, but with how fast I bound towards him, it doesn't take long for him to raise his eyes and meet mine. He freezes, gulps, and slowly ends the call. “Miss Wil—Mrs. V
Chapter 32 Liora's POV Something is Wrong And by wrong, I mean terribly wrong. For the whole day after leaving Evren’s office, I locked myself in my room, only taking food because I couldn't bear the thought of starving my baby. Around evening, however, Levi rushed to my room, telling me we had to leave. It was almost as if there was an attack. My heart lurched as I ran out, opening the door to see him pacing the corridor with Selina by his side. I asked what was going on, but he told me nothing too serious—we just had to leave because Evren had an emergency at the office to attend to. Since then, it's been a whole 24 hours, and I'm sitting in the living room in the city without any sight of Evren. If not for Arianna keeping me company, I would have lost my mind. “What is he keeping from me?“ I ask, placing my head in my palms. A sharp, throbbing pain hits me, and I relax back on the couch, signaling for a maid to bring me water. "Girl, you need to calm down. They said he ha
Chapter 31Evren's POVIf Marek saw me now, he'd make fun of me—for being such an idiot. When Liora gave her contract terms, along with the promise to make me fall for her, I told Marek it would only happen over my dead body.Yet she hasn't even tried, and I'm already ready to kiss the ground she walks on.Her body against mine feels like a dream, and my lips keep tingling from the kiss I just stole from her.She hasn't said a word since I asked her to give this a try, choosing silence instead."Liora, say something," I urge, my heart pounding as I wait for her decision.Instead of the heartfelt response I'm expecting after my speech, I'm met with a scoff, an eye roll, and her pushing me backward, making me land on my sofa. She wiggles her way out of my lap before I can stop her.My body immediately feels empty, like a part of me has been disconnected. I try to pull her by the waist towards me again. A sharp sting meets both of my hands.Ouch! This woman can slap."Evren, what do you
30Liora's POV“What did Marek tell you?“ is Evren's first question after my outburst. Funny of him to think his brother is the one who threw him under the bus. The fact that he's not immediately denying it means it's true. He did say something like that.I gulp, walking around his desk to stand closer to him. He needs to understand how serious this is. “Marek told me nothing, Evren.“He sighs, packing up some files from his table. “Good. Then there's nothing for us to talk about. Go have breakfast. The maid cooked something edible.“His audacity will never cease to amaze me. He's just trying to shake me off something as important as this?“No. We are going to talk about this now, Evren. Now,“ my voice comes out harsher than I planned. But I don't mind. He deserves it.“Liora, there's nothing to talk about. Marek told you nothing, so....““You're right about that,” I cut him off, “but when my six-year-old daughter comes running to me, asking when I'm supposed to get married to her 'da
Chapter 29Liora's POVLittle sniffles tell me exactly where I need to look to find my culprit. Selina is hiding under her duvet, crying softly. My heart aches with each hiccup and whimper. This is all my fault.I should have left her with Aunt. Now she's getting attached to a man who will never be her father.I raised her alone. With Aunt and Arianna's help. She had stopped asking after her dad when Arianna had 'mistakenly' told her he was an asshat, but she will have a new daddy one day. Dang it. See what it has led to.“Baby. What's wrong?“She stills, her shoulders seizing their movements.“Come on out. Come talk to mommy,“ I whisper gently, pulling the duvet to reveal her curled-up figure. She sits up, her cheeks pale and tear-streaked, and plunges into my arms.“Why is my princess crying? Have you forgotten so soon? The princess who always cried got all her candies eaten up by monsters.““Mommy, does daddy hate me?“I freeze, my hand tightening around her. What? Of all the quest
Chapter 28Evren's POV“Oh wow, Daddy! The food is so yummyy,” Selina beams as she takes yet another spoonful, totally disregarding her mother's warnings to take less.Children are a whole different level of work. I smile, placing my hands on the table and supporting my chin as I watch the little girl gobble down the food as though it’ll escape her plate if she doesn’t.One day, I’m going to have another kid sitting right beside her, eating in the same way. For some reason, before I met Liora, I used to imagine what life would be like with just myself and my son. But since the doctor confirmed her pregnancy three weeks ago, I don’t think I’ve had any thoughts where she and Selina weren’t involved. They’re always there. With my little boy and me. Like a complete family. The thought is beautiful yet scary. Do I really want to be tied down to a woman? What if she turns out to be like… No. I’m not thinking about that.I’m proud of myself—for cooking something so yummy. My daughter loves m
Chapter 27Liora's POVChapter 27Liora's POVI roll from one side of the bed to the other, missing the warmth that was usually there all these past days in the three weeks I've been with Evren. We're at his island, a very private one in the middle of nowhere. I'm sure it's because of Ronan's threats. Evren doesn't look like a man who would take vacations—much less in the middle of the year.“Ughhh. Why can't I sleep?“ I groan, sitting up on the bed and pulling the duvet angrily over me. It's all his fault. When we got here late in the evening, I told him to give me my own room. He agreed! The idiot agreed. How dare he? I expected him to argue and carry me to bed, where I had gotten used to his scent hitting my nostrils and giving me a sense of calm and protection through the night. We haven't cuddled yet, but I was a few steps away from initiating that. Especially when he sleeps shirtless. I think on those days, he was just trying to murder me or something. With a frustrated huff, I
Chapter 26Liora's POVI'm in my room, wrapping up a meeting I just had with my chefs when my phone beeps on the bed beside me.My brows arch before I pick it up, wondering who is texting me this early on a Sunday morning. I hope it's not Aunt.A relieved sigh escapes me when I notice it isn't. However, my curiosity doesn't let my mind rest, especially after seeing it's a text message from an unknown number."Hi. Missed me?"My first thought is that it's Arianna playing games with me. But I remember we agreed never to play games like these. So who could it be?"Hi? Who is this, and how can I help you?""Ouch, you hurt me, baby. I thought after memorizing every inch of your body, you'd at least memorize my phone number."The phone drops from my hand when I see that. With wide eyes, I observe it, unwilling to pick it up. What the hell?It beeps again, and I pick it up, typing fast into it without reading the most recent message."I'm sorry. I think you must have made a mistake. Have a n
