Liora's POV "Mommy, there's a man at the door looking for you," Selina says as she runs into the room where I'm packing up clothes for laundry. Placing my hands on my waist, I narrow my eyes at her. "Selina Wilder. Did you, by any chance, go to the door again? I've told you to stop that. A bad man could take you away." Her giggles stop, her face falling. "I'm sorry, Mommy. It's just that you were busy. I wanted to help you." It's just so hard to stay angry at her. But her safety is still my priority, especially with her crazy father out there. At the door, I meet a man in a suit, his eyes shielded by dark sunglasses. Behind him are three black SUVs, men dressed in similar attire patrolling the area. My heart thumps. Could they be Ronan's men? He always used two cars. "Miss Liora Wilder?" I gulp, then nod. "Yes. That's me." "I'm Levi Santiago, executive assistant of Mr. Evren Valesca. May I come in?" Oh, not this again. I specifically told my doctor I wouldn’t be a surrogate for that arrogant man. He tried to plead with me, make me see the importance of accepting that offer. But I'd dealt with one arrogant ass before. See where it left me now. There is no way I am signing a deal with another. Absolutely not. "No. You may rather go back to your boss and tell him I am not interested in his stupid offer." "Uh, Miss, maybe—" "No. He should get someone else. He's a billionaire, right?" The man clears his throat, digging into his suit and bringing out a small envelope. When he hands it to me, I'm about to tear it into shreds when he chuckles, "You don't wanna do that, Miss. Maybe read it first." I freeze. My eyes drop to the envelope, and the bold words make my stomach coil. "Lawsuit for Attempted Murder by Poisoning." What the hell? "What is this? Poisoning? What do you mean... What poisoning?" "Mr. Valesca will best explain things to you. Please be at his main office building by 1 p.m." He's gone before I can say another word. My throat clogs, my breathing harsh. I have no idea what this means. I didn't poison anybody. I drop Selina off at Adriana's place and drive to the Valesca building. My car isn't allowed to get past the first gate to the property. The building looms in the sky, towering easily over every other building in the city. Bright glass walls line it from top to bottom, glittering as the afternoon sun shines on it. The name "Valesca" boldly written mocks me from below. Arrogant jerks. "Miss Wilder. So good to see you. Please come with me." Levi smiles, motioning for me to follow him into the building and into an elevator labeled Private. It stops for no one, and in no time, I hear the ding that makes my heart race. "You can go in there. He's expecting you." He points towards a door labeled "CEO Evren Valesca." My palms start sweating before I can even walk in. I wipe them against my pants—random jeans I threw on in a haste—and knock twice on the door. "Come in." A deep, guttural voice sends my eyes bulging. I step in timidly, making sure I don't stare at the man who summoned me here. Instead, I look around—the high ceiling-to-floor windows, a small seating area with glass tables and red sofas, a bookshelf almost bigger than my entire office—and finally, my eyes rest on the round table where sits the arrogant man who made me come here. He's facing away from me, staring out into the city. He doesn't turn to face me even after a few minutes. I frown. Who the hell does he think he is? Having had enough, I decide to speak my mind. "Hello, Mr. Valesca. I am sure there must be some mistake. I don’t know about any poisoning incident." Silence. He doesn’t say anything, just continues looking outside. I close my eyes, fisting my shirt so I don't walk over and slap his arrogant face. "Mr. Valesca, I said I am—" My words get caught in my throat as his chair turns around, and I stare into the face of the most handsome guy I have ever seen. The man whose face had been imprinted in my mind since the party last night. The employee whom I kissed. I tried to find him afterward, but nobody seemed to recognize him. It all makes sense now. He was never an employee. The chilling realization dawns on me... Oh my goodness. I kissed a Valesca. I kissed the man who owns New York City. And I also bossed him around. Oh my God somebody kill me now. Those lips lift up at the edge, his silver-grey eyes fixing onto my face. "Miss Wilder, I see you've finally recognized me. Splendid." "..." "Oh, cat got your tongue? It didn’t seem to when you were bossing me around." "M-Mr. Valesca, I swear I had no idea you were the one. I thought—" "I was an employee of yours?" Leaning forward, he arches a brow. "Tell me something, Miss Wilder. Do you always go around kissing all your employees? Or was I the lucky one?" "...Sir, I can explain... It w-was a total misunderstanding—" He raises a hand to stop my rambling. "Please, spare my ears. I didn’t call you here for that. I’m pretty sure Levi told you already. So I’ll go straight to the point. Why did you try to kill my VIP guest?" What?5Liora's POVThe CEO in front of me is either crazy or insane. Same thing? Yes, but he's double. I've never associated with any rich people, aside from Ronan, in all my 25 years of life. Then how is he expecting me to respond to his very ridiculous question? This has to be a prank.“Mr. Valesca. I don't know who you think you are and why you think you can make me leave home and come here to entertain this silliness. But I'd have you know it's not funny.”“....”I huff when the man remains silent. Instead of acknowledging me, he picks up his pen and starts signing some documents. Hell no. I'm not staying here and letting him insult me like this.Turning on my heels, I start walking toward the door when someone finally speaks. I whirl around fast, noticing it's not him but a male reporter on the TV.He places the remote on his desk, leans back in his seat, and pulls off his tie.“We are at the house of Nicholas Romero, where the 65-year-old CEO of Romero Corporation is undergoing treat
6 Liora's POV “That’s not how blackmail works, Miss Wilder. One person needs to have the upper hand. In this case, and always, that’ll be me.” Evren smirks, leaning back in his seat and observing me. I click my tongue, biting back the sharp retort that threatens to come forth. Upper hand? Hell to the no. There’s no way a man will ever have an upper hand over my life again. Not while I’m still Liora Wilder. Still, I’ll let him think he has leverage over me. But I’m ready to sleep with one eye open from now on. “Okay, Mr. Valesca. Can I read through this?” Another lesson I learned after getting pregnant for Ronan: Don’t take things from strangers or gorgeous men. It’ll never end well. “Please do. Although I doubt you’ll have anything to say about what’s in there. We both will benefit from these arrangements.” I scoff, moving toward the small seating area in his office. Once there, I open the already prepared document, wondering just how he was able to get one so fast. Rich people
Chapter 7Evren's POV“How dare she?”“How dare she what?” Marek asks nonchalantly, watching the football game on the TV.His question makes me pause, my mind buzzing. He is right... How dare she what? I don't know what's irritating me more—the fact that she thinks she can tell me what to do or her telling me not to touch her.Really, how dare she? Even in jeans, her curvy body called out to me the entire time she stood in my office. I wanted to hold her hair and tilt her head back as my lips made contact with her soft skin. Now she's telling me not to touch her. Like hell, I won’t.I feel Marek's gaze on my pacing figure before he lets out a sigh. “Ren, listen to me... I don't see what is bugging you so much, brother. Her conditions aren't tough at all. I think you'd have a lot of ease going through with them.”He's lucky there's nothing around me to stab him with. What the hell does he mean by easy? “Don't talk about things you don't understand, Marek.”He scoffs, shaking his head.
Chapter 8Liora’s POV“Um, what are you doing?” Arianna asks as I shove one of my favorite skirts into my box.“I am eating pineapples… oh so yummy… what the hell does it look like I’m doing?” I grunt, passing her a glare. She rolls her eyes and walks further into the room from where she stood by the door. “Calm down, will you? What the hell crawled up your ass? A certain billionaire who wants to control you, huh?”I roll my eyes and decide to ignore her. But she doesn’t seem to get the hint because, barely five seconds later, she speaks again.“But why are you packing? I thought you said he was going to buy you clothes.”“......”“Girl, you signed a contract. Don’t tell me you plan on not following it?”Obviously. She thought I was going to tie myself down with a stupid contract? No way in hell.Arianna flails her arms. “How do they say I’m the stubborn one between us?”“That’s because you are the stubborn one. And by the way, shouldn’t you be at work? I thought you got the job.”It’
Chapter 9 Liora's POV All my greatest fears are coming to pass at once. Ronan appearing not only in front of Selina and Aunt but before Evren? Yeah, kill me now! Arianna's wide-opened eyes meet mine as I step out of the vehicle, reflecting the same level of fear and anxiety I'm feeling. Shit. We are doomed. I gulp, feeling rage and tears sting at my chest and eyes, respectively. Selina is not supposed to witness this. She is not supposed to know about Ronan. I've kept it a secret for such a long time—call me wicked, but I wasn’t and will never let my daughter into the life of such a despicable man. “Ronan, what are you doing here?“ I manage to ask, hoping he'd somehow take the hint and leave. “You have some nerve, huh? You think I wasn’t going to find out that you plan on taking my daughter away from me?“ The car door opens and closes behind me. Two distinct footsteps meet my ears. The softer ones have me clenching my eyes shut, hoping this moment will just evaporate and be for
Chapter 10Liora's POVWith one last smirk thrown my way, Ronan gets into his car and drives off. Without another word. Because he knows. He knows he will win.My legs buckle, tears welling up in my eyes. A hand steadies me before I can reach the ground, the heat from his body engulfing me. I know it's Evren before I even see him. Just a few weeks after knowing him, and his cologne is already imprinted in my brain. He doesn't say a word, to which I'm grateful, not being in the mood to talk.“Mommy!“ My angel's sharp voice greets my ears as she runs out towards me, Arianna hot on her tail.“Selina, will you stop running? You could get hurt!“ She pants, making me roll my eyes. It's no secret that Arianna is lazy. She always has an excuse to give when I tell her it's time for the morning run or evening walk.Selina's hands wrap around my legs, her little giggles bringing a certain warmth and light to my chest, almost making me forget Ronan. But I can't. Not when his carbon copy is right
Chapter 11Evren's POVSomehow, seeing Liora flustered makes me happy. Now, imagine my joy at seeing her face turn bright red with embarrassment when her daughter asks if I'm going to be her daddy.Liora and I haven't spoken about this yet, although she doesn't know I plan to take her child as my own. Having a little fun won't hurt, would it?“Little flower, you can ask Mommy that, okay? She'll tell you if I'm going to be your daddy.”Marek rolls his eyes at me. He knows exactly what I'm doing—putting her in a tight spot for my own entertainment. Hell yeah.I feel daggers glaring into my skin from where Liora stands. Selina is fast, running toward her mother to ask if I'm going to be her daddy. Unfortunately for me, Liora seems to have caught on to my plan because she just pleads for one of the maids to help her daughter to their room.Oops. That's another thing that'll get my little kiss thief hate me. Now, I can't wait for her reaction.Once Selina is gone, her smile drops, and the
12Liora's POV“You can open the rest of the buttons if you want. Oh heavens. Who does he even think he is? He's not the least bit attractive. He's just... umm... argghh!” I groan, dumping my book away.It falls to the ground with a thud, and I run to pick it up, making sure I didn't tear my favorite storybook because of Evren. When I see no issue with it, a sigh of relief escapes my lips. “Oh, my baby. I'm glad you're okay.”“I didn't know you talk alone. I'll need to Google to make sure it isn't hereditary. Plus, don't tell me I'll have to compete with a book.”I whirl around fast, and oh shit! Did I say he wasn't attractive? I must have been under the influence then because, wow, this guy is all definitions of sexy.Freshly showered, curls messy, and his silver-grey eyes boring into my soul, I have to admit. I might just accept one clause in the contract. Just one.But then, nothing good lasts forever, right? Because while I'm ogling the hottie in front of me, his arrogant, deep, g
Chapter 29Liora's POVLittle sniffles tell me exactly where I need to look to find my culprit. Selina is hiding under her duvet, crying softly. My heart aches with each hiccup and whimper. This is all my fault.I should have left her with Aunt. Now she's getting attached to a man who will never be her father.I raised her alone. With Aunt and Arianna's help. She had stopped asking after her dad when Arianna had 'mistakenly' told her he was an asshat, but she will have a new daddy one day. Dang it. See what it has led to.“Baby. What's wrong?“She stills, her shoulders seizing their movements.“Come on out. Come talk to mommy,“ I whisper gently, pulling the duvet to reveal her curled-up figure. She sits up, her cheeks pale and tear-streaked, and plunges into my arms.“Why is my princess crying? Have you forgotten so soon? The princess who always cried got all her candies eaten up by monsters.““Mommy, does daddy hate me?“I freeze, my hand tightening around her. What? Of all the quest
Chapter 28Evren's POV“Oh wow, Daddy! The food is so yummyy,” Selina beams as she takes yet another spoonful, totally disregarding her mother's warnings to take less.Children are a whole different level of work. I smile, placing my hands on the table and supporting my chin as I watch the little girl gobble down the food as though it’ll escape her plate if she doesn’t.One day, I’m going to have another kid sitting right beside her, eating in the same way. For some reason, before I met Liora, I used to imagine what life would be like with just myself and my son. But since the doctor confirmed her pregnancy three weeks ago, I don’t think I’ve had any thoughts where she and Selina weren’t involved. They’re always there. With my little boy and me. Like a complete family. The thought is beautiful yet scary. Do I really want to be tied down to a woman? What if she turns out to be like… No. I’m not thinking about that.I’m proud of myself—for cooking something so yummy. My daughter loves m
Chapter 27Liora's POVChapter 27Liora's POVI roll from one side of the bed to the other, missing the warmth that was usually there all these past days in the three weeks I've been with Evren. We're at his island, a very private one in the middle of nowhere. I'm sure it's because of Ronan's threats. Evren doesn't look like a man who would take vacations—much less in the middle of the year.“Ughhh. Why can't I sleep?“ I groan, sitting up on the bed and pulling the duvet angrily over me. It's all his fault. When we got here late in the evening, I told him to give me my own room. He agreed! The idiot agreed. How dare he? I expected him to argue and carry me to bed, where I had gotten used to his scent hitting my nostrils and giving me a sense of calm and protection through the night. We haven't cuddled yet, but I was a few steps away from initiating that. Especially when he sleeps shirtless. I think on those days, he was just trying to murder me or something. With a frustrated huff, I
Chapter 26Liora's POVI'm in my room, wrapping up a meeting I just had with my chefs when my phone beeps on the bed beside me.My brows arch before I pick it up, wondering who is texting me this early on a Sunday morning. I hope it's not Aunt.A relieved sigh escapes me when I notice it isn't. However, my curiosity doesn't let my mind rest, especially after seeing it's a text message from an unknown number."Hi. Missed me?"My first thought is that it's Arianna playing games with me. But I remember we agreed never to play games like these. So who could it be?"Hi? Who is this, and how can I help you?""Ouch, you hurt me, baby. I thought after memorizing every inch of your body, you'd at least memorize my phone number."The phone drops from my hand when I see that. With wide eyes, I observe it, unwilling to pick it up. What the hell?It beeps again, and I pick it up, typing fast into it without reading the most recent message."I'm sorry. I think you must have made a mistake. Have a n
Chapter 25 Liora's POV “What the hell were you doing, girl?” Arianna asks from where she's sitting beside me. We are in the waiting room at the hospital, unable to see Aunt now because the doctors are carrying out some procedures on her. Why is she asking me the same question he did? It’s obvious what I was doing. “Uh, you said to use feminine wiles to charm my man. I did just that.” I realize my words too late. She smiles, wiggling her brows. “Your man, huh? Cute.” God, give me strength. I can’t deal with this girl this afternoon. “......” She turns toward me, making strict eye contact. “Tell me something, girl. What exactly did you do? The feminine wiles you used.” “I puckered my lips like this.” I demonstrate. “That was after applying lip gloss to make it shinier? I can’t remember what you said it was for. I also winked like this, and then I—” “Enough, Liora! Geez.” I sit with a bright smile, hoping for her to praise me for a job well done. “So... rate my performance on a
Chapter 24 Liora's POV The pillow underneath my head is softer than the one on the plane, making me realize my bed has been changed. My eyes flutter open, the first thing greeting me being the blinding lights in Evren's room—well, my room too. “Ughh,” I groan, placing a hand over my eyes to shield them. Who the hell sleeps with the lights on? Although I slept more comfortably than I have in the past three days since Aunt's incident— Oh my God. Aunt. I jump out of bed, flinging the duvet carelessly to the side. My feet meet my slippers as I make haste toward the table in the corner to grab my purse and return to the hospital. Damn, Liora. How could you be so stupid? Your aunt is fighting for her life, and you're here sleeping comfortably like life is a cloud. I'm so stupid. And whoever put me in bed is even more stupid. The door swings open before my hand can reach the doorknob, almost hitting me in the face. Evren walks in—shirtless, with black sweatpants dangling off his hip
Chapter 23 Evren's POV 23 Evren's POV Marching up to her father was never part of my mission when I decided to follow her here. I had only planned to keep her safe, make sure nothing happened to even a strand of hair on her head because that would affect my baby too. But seeing her father act worse than my grandfather made me throw all respect out of the window. That’s if I even had any to begin with. Two of my guards bound down the small hallway leading to the preacher’s stand and take the corner to the half-open door where her father is preparing to come from. Whispers meet my ears, gazes fall on me, but I ignore them. I want only him. To apologize to my wif—my surrogate. Not for long though. She’s soon going to be my wife. Whether she likes it or not. I’m surprised to see the man who acted all bold outside quietly following my guards as they lead him to me. Not wanting to attract more drama than necessary, I turned around, letting him follow me as we went in the opposite
Chapter 22Liora's POV“The Lord is ready to accept all who come to him. He is ready to welcome them into his fold. Abandon your ways...“I zone out the rest of the preacher's words as I walk into the little church in my community—a place I swore never to return to. But it's inevitable. I'm doing this for Aunt. I know she won't be happy, but I'm willing to take her anger as long as she's alive.Evren walks beside me, his presence providing a sense of comfort and protection. He's as stubborn as a she-goat. I told him to stay back, but he told me his baby was going nowhere without him, and in less than two hours, his jet had been prepared for us to take the three-hour journey to Salt Lake City.Even when I told him to stay in the car while I alerted my parents that I was here, he still followed me in.Not that I'm complaining... much.“Liora?“ Mom’s whisper meets my ears. In no time, I’m engulfed in a warm yet unfamiliar embrace. How can my mother’s embrace seem so strange to me?“Mothe
Chapter 21Liora's POVI should have known something was up.As I'm walking back up to Evren's office, because my lame ass decided to forget my phone there, I notice a commotion as an ambulance arrives and paramedics rush in like their lives depend on it.I mean, it dies, right? If an employee of the Valescas dies in the office, it won't end well with anyone in this city. I wonder what could have happened. In my head, I'm singing a happy song, reminiscing about the moment between Evren and me earlier. He loved my food.He ate about five spoonfuls before insisting I leave. Odd behavior. But then he's always like that. The moment the elevator opens, the sight before my eyes has my senses heightening, my heart plummeting to my feet. The paramedics were headed for Evren's office? Could something have happened to Levi? He's clumsy, so it wouldn't be surprising. But as I see the person on the sofa, coughing while they try to attend to him, my heart loses it.Evren is pale, his lips blue, an
