Chapter 2

Author: Right Behind You
Early the next morning, I had the lock changed and hired movers to clear out all the junk Richard had left behind.

Hayden stood by the door clutching the towel I'd given him the night before. His smile was strained.

"Does that mean I have to go too?"

What was I supposed to say to that?

Before I could answer, he added, "I won't freeload. I can clean, cook, whatever you need. I learn fast."

"You need to focus on getting better first."

Then I sighed. "Come home with me."

I rented a two-bedroom apartment. It wasn't big, but at least it was quiet. Once we got there, I found Hayden a clean set of pajamas and another towel, then straightened up the spare room for him.

"Go take a shower."

He lingered in the doorway with the clothes in his arms.

"These are yours?"

"Whose else would they be?"

Once I heard the shower running, I went to the kitchen to make some oatmeal, but my thoughts wouldn't settle.

Something about Hayden kept bringing back things I'd rather not remember.

When I was a kid, the sound I dreaded most was the door opening at night. If Richard came home late, it meant he'd been drinking. Sometimes he yelled. Sometimes he smashed things.

Later, when Laura got sick, he'd even gambled away the money for her medication. Then he'd sit beside her hospital bed, hold her hand, and promise that once he made some money, he'd take her to a better hospital.

Laura believed him once.

It nearly killed her.

That was why I hated having men too close to me.

When Hayden came out, my pajamas hung loose on his frame. I hadn't realized until then just how delicate his features were. He was prettier than most women I'd met.

He was also painfully thin. There were old scars along his collarbone and more on his arms.

I handed him the ointment.

"Apply some of this."

He gave me a small pout. "Could you do it? I can't reach my back."

I frowned. "Hayden."

"My hands are shaking." He pushed his sleeve up a little. "Babe, I really can't reach."

In the end, I had him sit on the edge of the bed with his back to me. I spread the ointment over the injuries, trying not to think too hard about the feel of his skin beneath my fingers. Halfway through, I realized I was sweating.

"Are you always this nice to people?" he asked.

"Depends on the person."

"And what am I?"

"A temporary houseguest."

A smile tugged at his mouth, but he didn't answer.

For dinner, I made plain oatmeal and eggs. Afterward, Hayden tried to take the dishes from me, but I sent him back to the couch and washed them myself.

He sat behind me, watching.

"Why are you helping me?"

"It's no skin off my back."

"You're lying."

I looked back at him.

He had his knees drawn up to his chest.

"That's not why. You just couldn't bring yourself to leave me there."

That night, I pointed toward the spare room.

"You can sleep in there."

He pouted before answering, "It's too dark."

"Turn on the light."

"It's still dark with the light on."

I turned to look at him. "What are you trying to say?"

He pressed his lips together, then pulled his sleeve back enough to show the marks around his wrist.

"I've been locked up before."

Well, that did it.

There was no way I could say no after that.

I lifted one corner of my blanket.

"Just for tonight."

Hayden came over carrying his pillow.

"I won't move around."

"You'd better not."

The two of us squeezed onto my narrow, low bed. After I turned off the light, he shifted closer until our skin touched.

He smelled faintly of medicine, and his body felt slightly cool against mine.

I'd never been this physically close to a man before. Heat slowly spread through me.

For a long time, Hayden didn't say anything. I thought he'd fallen asleep.

Then he spoke into the dark, sounding hurt.

"Are you going to be like him too? Are you going to sell me one day?"

Bonus Chapter: Hayden JensenMy first awakening came on a rainy night. The former head of Mirrorglass had just died, and the room reeked of medicine and blood. When I opened my eyes, I had another lifetime's worth of memories in my head, along with a very clear idea of how everything was supposed to end. This world came from a novel that had never been properly finished.Ashport would descend into chaos. The books would become a mess of dirty money. Some people would make fortunes off relics from the old civilization, while others existed only to be used as stepping stones. And in the original story, Maya Whitmore was nothing more than a throwaway character doomed by her father's debts. Her father was the first person I set my sights on.I'd seen plenty of men like him. Not smart enough to know their limits, but reckless enough to get involved in anything dirty. They always thought they could play every side and come out ahead. All they ever managed to do was drag everyone around them

We stood there in a standoff by the door for half an hour.In the end, I was the one who caved first. I pulled the first-aid kit out of the cabinet and tossed it onto the couch."Sit."Hayden obeyed, sat down, and began rummaging through the supplies himself. He deliberately picked up the wrong spray and, with a perfectly straight face, brought it toward his mouth.I rolled my eyes and snatched it away."Knock it off.""You're still willing to take care of me.""Shut up."I treated his injuries without going especially easy on him. He didn't flinch or complain, just sat there and took it. A long time passed before he finally said, "I'm sorry.""Then tell me the truth."He nodded. And this time, he told me everything.Richard hadn't just been running loan scams. He'd also been helping several dealers around Ashport traffic banned relics from the old civilization. Mirrorglass had been investigating the operation, and Hayden had followed the paper trail to the old apartment. The ledger he

I turned around and walked out.Hayden followed me all the way downstairs, then all the way home. When I unlocked the apartment, he came in behind me.The door had barely closed before I ripped my hand out of his."Don't touch me."He stopped in the entryway and didn't come any closer. Then I let him have everything I'd been holding in. The fake name. The fake injuries. The whole story about having nowhere to go."Not one damn thing you told me was true."He stood there and took it without trying to defend himself, which somehow made me even angrier. Finally, I looked him straight in the eye."What was it about me? You thought I was stupid? Easy to fool?" I gave a bitter laugh. "You really thought you were slick, didn't you? Scheming bastard."Hayden raised his eyes to mine, regret plain in them."I was counting on you being softhearted. On you taking me home. On you standing in front of me even when you knew something wasn't right."My chest tightened.I slapped him.The impact left m

The next morning, I changed every lock in the apartment, had a camera installed in the hallway, and started carrying something for self-defense in my bag.I figured that would at least buy us some time.Three days later, Hayden disappeared.Breakfast was still warm, but he was gone. He didn't answer his phone or respond to my messages, and Mirrorglass said he hadn't shown up for work.I stood in the middle of the living room with sweat slicking my palms.By the time Quinn arrived, I had blown up the security footage as far as it would go and was going through it frame by frame. She took one look at me and didn't waste time asking questions. She just sat down and helped. We stopped at 5:17 a.m.Hayden had opened the door himself. A black car was waiting outside. Before he got in, he looked straight at the camera and stood there for two seconds. Then he left.Quinn spoke quietly."Maya, he went willingly.""I still have to find him."I traced the license plate as far as I could, then ch

Lately, I couldn't shake the feeling that someone was watching me.A car kept tailing me on my way to work. There were always unfamiliar men hanging around the intersection near my apartment, and even the owner of the convenience store downstairs had started taking a second look at me.I changed my route twice and still couldn't shake whoever was following me.Hayden, meanwhile, acted like nothing was wrong. He was as attached to me as ever. One afternoon, he lifted me onto the kitchen counter and planted his hands on either side of me."I'm hungry.""There's pasta in the fridge.""I don't want pasta.""Then what do you want?"He looked straight at me."You."Heat rushed to my ears, and I pushed at his chest. "It's the middle of the day. Behave."He only leaned down and brushed a kiss over my lips, smiling faintly."I won't let anyone lay a hand on you."I'd been about to tell him off again, but that stopped me cold. That night after work, I deliberately took a side street to see if I

The next morning, I woke up so sore through the waist that even rolling over took effort.I stared at the ceiling with one thought going through my head. How the hell had I gotten so thoroughly outmatched last night?Hayden had an arm around me from behind and was obviously in a fantastic mood."Still sore?""No."The second his hand touched my waist, I sucked in a breath. He buried his face against my shoulder and laughed. I raised a hand to shut him up, but before I could cover his mouth, he kissed my palm."I'll be gentler next time.""You don't sound sorry at all.""I'll make it up to you tonight."I whipped my head around. "Don't even think about it."His eyes curved with amusement, but he behaved and started rubbing my sore muscles. He was actually pretty good at it. The problem was the look on his face. He couldn't have looked more pleased with himself if he'd tried. After that, the whole dynamic between us changed.Hayden was still clingy. He still liked to coax me into things,
