Chapter 3

Author: Right Behind You
From then on, Hayden started following me everywhere.

When I left for work, he walked me to the door and asked what time I'd be home. If I went out to the balcony to hang laundry, he'd linger in the doorway and watch. Even when I was preparing meals, he'd drag a little stool into the kitchen and sit there with the mug I'd given him, watching me cut ingredients.

"Do you seriously have nothing better to do?"

"I'm keeping you company."

"You don't have to."

"I want to."

He said it so matter-of-factly that I couldn't even bring myself to snap at him.

A few days later, Quinn Jordan stopped by the restoration shop to drop off some old paper samples, and I casually mentioned what had been going on. She listened, set down her tea, and stared at me.

"Girl, run. You're in trouble."

"I just gave someone a place to stay."

"You're putting an awful lot of effort into 'just giving someone a place to stay.'" Quinn leaned against the counter. "I've known you forever, and I've never seen you buy a guy new slippers, towels, and pajamas. You even made him oatmeal."

"He was sick."

"And being sick got him straight into your bed? Because trust me, I've already pictured that whole situation."

I coughed awkwardly. "Oh, shut up. Don't start."

She gave me a look. "Please. You've got a crush written all over your face. I've never even seen you get close to a man before."

Then she reached over and touched my cheek.

I swatted her hand away. "Quit it."

With one arched eyebrow, she quipped, "Half a bed for rent, someone to keep you warm on cold nights, plus all the fringe benefits. Sounds like a pretty good deal."

"Will you stop? I don't even like him like that."

By then my ears were burning. I was so embarrassed I refused to give her anything else to work with and ducked behind the old machine that had been broken for the past two days, grateful for something to hide behind.

Quinn only smiled.

"Sure, Maya Whitmore. Keep telling yourself that."

When I got home that night, Hayden already had dinner on the table.

"You're twenty minutes late."

"There was traffic."

"You're lying." He carried another dish over. "You had milk tea."

I glanced at the takeout bag beside him. The name of the milk-tea shop was printed right across it.

I said nothing.

Hayden looked up at me, a trace of smug satisfaction in his eyes.

"I can smell it."

I sat down and started eating, pushing a mug of warm milk toward him. He drank it in small sips and ended up with milk around his mouth. When I offered him a tissue, he ignored it and leaned his face toward me instead.

"You do it."

"Do your hands not work?"

"Babe."

There was no winning with him. I pulled out a tissue and wiped the corner of his mouth.

A thunderstorm rolled in that night.

Hayden appeared in my doorway carrying his pillow, looking pitiful.

"I'm scared of thunder."

I set my phone face down and pretended not to notice the look he was giving me.

"You said last night was a one-time thing."

"Tonight's different."

"How?"

"There's thunder."

Rain hammered against the windows. Hayden stayed where he was, neither pushing nor asking again. He simply waited until I finally gave in.

"Fine. Get in."

For the first five minutes after he slipped under the covers, he behaved.

Then a hand settled against my waist.

My entire body went rigid.

"Hayden."

"My hand's cold."

"Put it on the hot-water bottle."

"It's not as warm as you are."

I turned to look at him. Hayden wrapped his arms around me and pressed a kiss to my shoulder.

"Can I not even do this?"

His voice was so soft that, for a moment, I couldn't think of anything to say.

"Just don't move around."

"Okay."

He sounded perfectly obedient. The next second, he pulled me fully against him and tangled his legs with mine.

I tried to pry his arm loose.

It didn't budge.

For someone so thin, Hayden was ridiculously strong. Once he had me in his arms, his grip was rock solid.

My heart gave a sudden thump.

I stared at him. "How are you this strong?"

He only nestled closer.

"Babe, do you hate me?"

I considered that for all of three seconds.

"No."

His eyes crinkled with a smile, and he tucked his chin against my shoulder.

"Then let me hold you a little longer."

Bonus Chapter: Hayden JensenMy first awakening came on a rainy night. The former head of Mirrorglass had just died, and the room reeked of medicine and blood. When I opened my eyes, I had another lifetime's worth of memories in my head, along with a very clear idea of how everything was supposed to end. This world came from a novel that had never been properly finished.Ashport would descend into chaos. The books would become a mess of dirty money. Some people would make fortunes off relics from the old civilization, while others existed only to be used as stepping stones. And in the original story, Maya Whitmore was nothing more than a throwaway character doomed by her father's debts. Her father was the first person I set my sights on.I'd seen plenty of men like him. Not smart enough to know their limits, but reckless enough to get involved in anything dirty. They always thought they could play every side and come out ahead. All they ever managed to do was drag everyone around them

We stood there in a standoff by the door for half an hour.In the end, I was the one who caved first. I pulled the first-aid kit out of the cabinet and tossed it onto the couch."Sit."Hayden obeyed, sat down, and began rummaging through the supplies himself. He deliberately picked up the wrong spray and, with a perfectly straight face, brought it toward his mouth.I rolled my eyes and snatched it away."Knock it off.""You're still willing to take care of me.""Shut up."I treated his injuries without going especially easy on him. He didn't flinch or complain, just sat there and took it. A long time passed before he finally said, "I'm sorry.""Then tell me the truth."He nodded. And this time, he told me everything.Richard hadn't just been running loan scams. He'd also been helping several dealers around Ashport traffic banned relics from the old civilization. Mirrorglass had been investigating the operation, and Hayden had followed the paper trail to the old apartment. The ledger he

I turned around and walked out.Hayden followed me all the way downstairs, then all the way home. When I unlocked the apartment, he came in behind me.The door had barely closed before I ripped my hand out of his."Don't touch me."He stopped in the entryway and didn't come any closer. Then I let him have everything I'd been holding in. The fake name. The fake injuries. The whole story about having nowhere to go."Not one damn thing you told me was true."He stood there and took it without trying to defend himself, which somehow made me even angrier. Finally, I looked him straight in the eye."What was it about me? You thought I was stupid? Easy to fool?" I gave a bitter laugh. "You really thought you were slick, didn't you? Scheming bastard."Hayden raised his eyes to mine, regret plain in them."I was counting on you being softhearted. On you taking me home. On you standing in front of me even when you knew something wasn't right."My chest tightened.I slapped him.The impact left m

The next morning, I changed every lock in the apartment, had a camera installed in the hallway, and started carrying something for self-defense in my bag.I figured that would at least buy us some time.Three days later, Hayden disappeared.Breakfast was still warm, but he was gone. He didn't answer his phone or respond to my messages, and Mirrorglass said he hadn't shown up for work.I stood in the middle of the living room with sweat slicking my palms.By the time Quinn arrived, I had blown up the security footage as far as it would go and was going through it frame by frame. She took one look at me and didn't waste time asking questions. She just sat down and helped. We stopped at 5:17 a.m.Hayden had opened the door himself. A black car was waiting outside. Before he got in, he looked straight at the camera and stood there for two seconds. Then he left.Quinn spoke quietly."Maya, he went willingly.""I still have to find him."I traced the license plate as far as I could, then ch

Lately, I couldn't shake the feeling that someone was watching me.A car kept tailing me on my way to work. There were always unfamiliar men hanging around the intersection near my apartment, and even the owner of the convenience store downstairs had started taking a second look at me.I changed my route twice and still couldn't shake whoever was following me.Hayden, meanwhile, acted like nothing was wrong. He was as attached to me as ever. One afternoon, he lifted me onto the kitchen counter and planted his hands on either side of me."I'm hungry.""There's pasta in the fridge.""I don't want pasta.""Then what do you want?"He looked straight at me."You."Heat rushed to my ears, and I pushed at his chest. "It's the middle of the day. Behave."He only leaned down and brushed a kiss over my lips, smiling faintly."I won't let anyone lay a hand on you."I'd been about to tell him off again, but that stopped me cold. That night after work, I deliberately took a side street to see if I

The next morning, I woke up so sore through the waist that even rolling over took effort.I stared at the ceiling with one thought going through my head. How the hell had I gotten so thoroughly outmatched last night?Hayden had an arm around me from behind and was obviously in a fantastic mood."Still sore?""No."The second his hand touched my waist, I sucked in a breath. He buried his face against my shoulder and laughed. I raised a hand to shut him up, but before I could cover his mouth, he kissed my palm."I'll be gentler next time.""You don't sound sorry at all.""I'll make it up to you tonight."I whipped my head around. "Don't even think about it."His eyes curved with amusement, but he behaved and started rubbing my sore muscles. He was actually pretty good at it. The problem was the look on his face. He couldn't have looked more pleased with himself if he'd tried. After that, the whole dynamic between us changed.Hayden was still clingy. He still liked to coax me into things,
