Chapter 2

Author: Raine
The glaring red walls put me on edge.

“Do we have any blue paint left?”

Rebecca’s frown deepened.

“Why would we keep something like that in the house? What if Lenny swallowed some? Just leave it. Red’s bright and cheerful. That blue was so dreary and suffocating.”

She gave me a dismissive glance, but something in that look made my heart sink.

For a moment, I could not tell whether she meant the color was suffocating or I was.

I stood in the doorway as she took a pair of boxers off a hanger and carried them into the guest bedroom next door. She did not seem to care that I was watching.

Even that brief exposure to the fragrance had left me itching all over. I had scratched my arms raw.

I held my breath, went over to the drawer, and pulled it open.

It was full of Kirk’s skincare products.

“Where’s my allergy medication?”

Rebecca was about to walk over to me when Kirk’s scream sounded from downstairs.

“Kirk, what’s going on?”

She immediately turned and rushed downstairs.

I did not ask again. I found the first aid kit and swallowed a loratadine tablet.

As I sat on the bed in a daze, I thought back to our first year in business. I had tested fragrance samples from the factory despite the unbearable itching all over my body.

It was Rebecca who found me unconscious in the office. She had called an ambulance and later taken me home.

The next morning, I opened my door to find her asleep on the floor outside.

She said she had been afraid something might happen to me during the night with no one around to help, so she had stayed outside my door until morning.

That was when I knew she was the woman I wanted to marry. However…

I stood at the top of the stairs and watched Rebecca slip Kirk’s burned finger into her mouth.

Kirk spotted me and hastily pulled his hand away.

“Miller, all settled in? Come down and have dinner.”

I shook my head. “Eat without me.”

Not long afterward, Rebecca brought a plate of food upstairs and set it down hard on the table.

“You’re finally home after so long. Do you really have to give us that attitude? Kirk was so worried he had upset you that he didn’t eat a thing. He just took Lenny back to their room.”

I pulled up my pant leg to reveal the dark bruise.

“I came back to my own home, only to be beaten by a security guard who thought I was a thief. Everything the housekeeper made was spicy. Spicy food hurts my stomach.”

My voice was painfully hoarse. “I’m not sulking. I’m just exhausted.”

Rebecca’s expression softened a little.

“The guard’s new. Understandably, he didn’t recognize you.”

I said nothing.

Kirk had been a stay-at-home husband for ten years. After his divorce, no one would hire him.

I gave him a job at my company and trained him myself.

However, he carelessly left a zero out of a bid. The mistake cost the company nearly a hundred million on the project.

To make up for the loss, I volunteered for an overseas assignment in Aurelune.

Before I left, I reminded Rebecca over and over to take good care of him.

I had never imagined that during the six months I was away, he would become the man of my house.

The new guard did not recognize me, but he knew Rebecca adored Kirk.

Rebecca crouched down to examine my injury.

“It’s just a bruise. I’ll put some ointment on it later.”

She turned and walked away.

“I’ll take Kirk and Lenny out for dinner and order you some takeout while I’m at it.”

Familiar footsteps came up the stairs, and I hurried over to meet them.

“Dad, Mom, are you back from your treatment?”

My mother gripped my hand.

“Miller, you’ve lost weight!”

“I’m fine. Dad, let me help you back to your room.”

My father doubled over with a coughing fit, yet he still tried to reassure me. “I… I’m fine. I can do it myself.”

He turned and braced one hand against the wall as he stumbled down the stairs.

I froze. “Isn’t your room that way?”

Mom said hesitantly, “We have trouble getting around. The stairs are difficult for us, so Rebecca moved us downstairs.”

I followed my parents into the basement.

Their room was less than forty-three square feet. It held a single bed and did not even have a window.

My voice shook. “How could she make you live somewhere like this?”

Perhaps Rebecca regretted what she had done and had given up because we divided our assets without difficulty. In addition to my share, she set up a trust fund that would let me live comfortably for the rest of my life.On the day we signed the papers, she handed me a tiny gold bracelet. Her eyes were red with tears.“I got this a year ago. It was for our baby. Keep it… as a keepsake.”The thought of the baby we had lost eight years earlier brought a fresh heartache.I did not refuse and accepted the bracelet. As I left, I heard her voice behind me. It was barely more than a broken whisper.“I’m sorry. I love you.”But I did not look back. After returning to Rosavelle, I opened a small photography studio.I revisited all the streets my parents and I had walked together. Through my lens, I searched for traces of the life we had shared.I dug out their old photographs and scanned and restored them one by one.Bit by bit, the yellowing faded, and their blurred faces came back

“Miller…”Rebecca looked at me. Mixed emotions flickered across her face before she hung her head in shame.“I’m sorry I’m late.”She had never sounded so meek and hesitant. “I know what happened to your parents. Sorry. I wasn’t thinking straight. I…”She swallowed hard, but she could not finish her sentence.Maybe even she seemed unable to defend what she had done. She reached for my hand. The instant her fingertips brushed the back of it, I jerked away.“Don’t touch me.” I looked at her without emotion. Those three words stopped Rebecca’s hand midair.“Miller, I’m sorry. Giving away the donor lung was wrong. I… I didn’t know your father’s condition would suddenly get worse. The doctor said he was stable and that he had a good chance of recovering. I never thought…”“You never thought they could die?” I stared into her anguished eyes.“If you hadn’t forced my parents into that damp, moldy basement, he wouldn’t have caught the bacterial infection that made his condition wo

Rebecca remembered Miller’s call the day before. His voice had trembled as he demanded to know why she had given away the donor lung he had spent a year waiting to secure for his father.A sudden wave of panic swept over her. She grabbed her phone and dialed his number. It rang for a long time, but no one answered.Rebecca grew agitated. Her fingers flew across the screen as she texted him.[Miller, stop sulking. Come home so we can talk this through.]She sent message after message without a reply. She sent him a final text.[Miller, how long are you going to keep this up?]An email arrived moments after she sent the message. It was a settlement agreement from Miller’s lawyer.Rebecca froze as she read it.Her strength drained away. She sank into a chair.Miller was calling off their engagement. The terms were clear. His shares in the company and his share of their home were to be bought out in full.Miller was determined to cut every tie between them. After ten years to

(3rd POV)Last night, Rebecca and Kirk celebrated Lenny’s eighth birthday together. They had booked a private room at a new family restaurant on the south side of town. The room was filled with balloons and toys. Before he blew out his birthday candles, Lenny tilted his round little face up to Rebecca. He asked in a sweet little voice, “Rebecca, will you be my real mom? Then, the three of us can stay together forever.”He held up a drawing. There were three people in it: a man in a suit, a woman with long hair, and a child. They stood beneath a rainbow. In one corner, crooked letters spelled out “My family.”Kirk quickly took the drawing from him. His eyes glistened with tears.Rebecca looked at the drawing, then at Kirk, who seemed close to crying. In the end, she could not bring herself to say no.She ruffled Lenny’s hair and said, “Of course. I’ll always be here for you, Lenny.”Lenny cheered and threw himself into her arms. Kirk turned away to wipe his tears. To anyone

As I left the office, my phone suddenly vibrated in my pocket. It was the hospital.“Mr. Amell, your father started vomiting blood during treatment today. He’s been taken to the ER. We’re doing everything we can to save him.”My heart lurched. I ran into the street through the pouring rain and frantically flagged down a taxi.Between the slippery roads and heavy traffic, it took me almost an hour to reach the hospital.Mom was sobbing uncontrollably outside the ER.“Miller, the doctor says he can’t wait any longer. Your dad needs a lung transplant right away, or he won’t survive!”My hands shook as I called the doctor in charge of organ allocation. He sounded puzzled. “You didn’t know? Ms. Holden arranged for the donor lung to go to one of Mr. McGraw’s relatives last week.”I went numb.It was simply unbelievable that Rebecca had given my father’s donor lung to someone else. I had paid five hundred thousand and spent a year on the waiting list for it.I called her and demand

Mom hurried to reassure me. “It’s all right. We’re comfortable here.”My throat tightened.“There are several guest rooms in this house. You shouldn’t have to stay down here.”I strode upstairs. Only then did I discover that my parents’ room had been turned into a child’s bedroom.Dad’s oxygen concentrator sat in the corner under a layer of dust. Kirk’s old clothes were piled on the massage chair I had bought for my parents.Mom immediately tried to calm me down.“Miller, don’t be mad. We’re old. It doesn’t matter where we stay. Once your father gets better, we’ll go back home. We don’t want to be a burden on you and Rebecca.”I closed my eyes for a moment.“Mom, come with me. I’ll book you a hotel room. We’re not staying in this house anymore.”Rebecca did not call until the next morning.“It’s Lenny’s birthday today. He likes having people around, so come celebrate with us tonight.”She did not even care that I had been gone all night.I looked at my parents. They were st
