Chapter 3

작가: Raine
Mom hurried to reassure me. “It’s all right. We’re comfortable here.”

My throat tightened.

“There are several guest rooms in this house. You shouldn’t have to stay down here.”

I strode upstairs. Only then did I discover that my parents’ room had been turned into a child’s bedroom.

Dad’s oxygen concentrator sat in the corner under a layer of dust. Kirk’s old clothes were piled on the massage chair I had bought for my parents.

Mom immediately tried to calm me down.

“Miller, don’t be mad. We’re old. It doesn’t matter where we stay. Once your father gets better, we’ll go back home. We don’t want to be a burden on you and Rebecca.”

I closed my eyes for a moment.

“Mom, come with me. I’ll book you a hotel room. We’re not staying in this house anymore.”

Rebecca did not call until the next morning.

“It’s Lenny’s birthday today. He likes having people around, so come celebrate with us tonight.”

She did not even care that I had been gone all night.

I looked at my parents. They were still asleep in the hotel bed. I murmured a quiet yes.

Then, I gripped my phone and thought back to three years earlier.

Dad had just been diagnosed with late-stage lung cancer. He had only a 10% chance of being cured.

While Mom and I were too distraught to know what to do, Rebecca had wasted no time. She had sold the family home she had inherited from her parents and brought in a leading specialist from overseas.

Dose after dose of lifesaving medication had kept Dad alive. That was why the three of us could still be together today.

I took a deep breath and decided to give her one more chance.

I returned to the office, only to find Kirk’s name on the door of my office.

When I asked Rebecca about it, she said offhandedly, “Kirk needs somewhere to help Lenny with his homework. Your office is spacious and quiet.”

She pointed to the coffee table beside her.

“You’re leaving on another business trip next month anyway. Just make do here for a few days.”

I dug my nails into my palm.

Years of desk work had left me with a herniated disc in my neck. I often suffered from headaches.

Rebecca had ordered a desk at just the right height for me and a custom-built electric office chair with a massage function.

But she expected me to hunch over a coffee table to work.

Kirk walked over with tearful eyes.

“Miller, don’t blame Rebecca. Why don’t we swap? You can have the big office.”

He paused before he added quietly, “The coffee table is a little low. Lenny could develop scoliosis if he has to bend over it to do his homework, but we can manage for a few days.”

Rebecca immediately stood up. “There’s no need to swap. I’ve made my decision.”

She turned to me. Impatience crept into her voice.

“Miller, when did you become such a difficult person?”

I was about to speak when Alan Skipper, Kirk’s secretary, stepped forward. He was a younger alumnus of my college.

“Miller, stop fighting Kirk over this. If he hadn’t stepped aside for you back then, you wouldn’t have that office in the first place.”

I froze.

Before I could react, Jeff Barry, our sales director, cleared his throat and cut in. Jeff was Rebecca’s high school friend. He had been with us since we started the company.

“Miller, Kirk and Rebecca were the best team back in college. They won every business competition they entered. You got lucky.

“You only got to be CEO because Kirk walked away. It’s time you gave the position back to the person it belongs to.”

Kirk and Rebecca had been the golden couple at business school. Everyone had assumed they were together.

However, Kirk had married an heiress straight out of college and settled into life as a stay-at-home husband.

Rebecca and I had started the company together. We had grown close through all the days and nights of working side by side, then gradually fallen in love.

I clenched my fists and looked at Rebecca.

“Is that how you see it too?”

She rubbed her brow in frustration.

“What difference does it make where you sit? Stop making a scene! I have a meeting to get to.”

My throat tightened. I could not force out even a word.

After a moment, I said, “Fine. He can have it.”

In fact, he could have her too.

Perhaps Rebecca regretted what she had done and had given up because we divided our assets without difficulty. In addition to my share, she set up a trust fund that would let me live comfortably for the rest of my life.On the day we signed the papers, she handed me a tiny gold bracelet. Her eyes were red with tears.“I got this a year ago. It was for our baby. Keep it… as a keepsake.”The thought of the baby we had lost eight years earlier brought a fresh heartache.I did not refuse and accepted the bracelet. As I left, I heard her voice behind me. It was barely more than a broken whisper.“I’m sorry. I love you.”But I did not look back. After returning to Rosavelle, I opened a small photography studio.I revisited all the streets my parents and I had walked together. Through my lens, I searched for traces of the life we had shared.I dug out their old photographs and scanned and restored them one by one.Bit by bit, the yellowing faded, and their blurred faces came back

“Miller…”Rebecca looked at me. Mixed emotions flickered across her face before she hung her head in shame.“I’m sorry I’m late.”She had never sounded so meek and hesitant. “I know what happened to your parents. Sorry. I wasn’t thinking straight. I…”She swallowed hard, but she could not finish her sentence.Maybe even she seemed unable to defend what she had done. She reached for my hand. The instant her fingertips brushed the back of it, I jerked away.“Don’t touch me.” I looked at her without emotion. Those three words stopped Rebecca’s hand midair.“Miller, I’m sorry. Giving away the donor lung was wrong. I… I didn’t know your father’s condition would suddenly get worse. The doctor said he was stable and that he had a good chance of recovering. I never thought…”“You never thought they could die?” I stared into her anguished eyes.“If you hadn’t forced my parents into that damp, moldy basement, he wouldn’t have caught the bacterial infection that made his condition wo

Rebecca remembered Miller’s call the day before. His voice had trembled as he demanded to know why she had given away the donor lung he had spent a year waiting to secure for his father.A sudden wave of panic swept over her. She grabbed her phone and dialed his number. It rang for a long time, but no one answered.Rebecca grew agitated. Her fingers flew across the screen as she texted him.[Miller, stop sulking. Come home so we can talk this through.]She sent message after message without a reply. She sent him a final text.[Miller, how long are you going to keep this up?]An email arrived moments after she sent the message. It was a settlement agreement from Miller’s lawyer.Rebecca froze as she read it.Her strength drained away. She sank into a chair.Miller was calling off their engagement. The terms were clear. His shares in the company and his share of their home were to be bought out in full.Miller was determined to cut every tie between them. After ten years to

(3rd POV)Last night, Rebecca and Kirk celebrated Lenny’s eighth birthday together. They had booked a private room at a new family restaurant on the south side of town. The room was filled with balloons and toys. Before he blew out his birthday candles, Lenny tilted his round little face up to Rebecca. He asked in a sweet little voice, “Rebecca, will you be my real mom? Then, the three of us can stay together forever.”He held up a drawing. There were three people in it: a man in a suit, a woman with long hair, and a child. They stood beneath a rainbow. In one corner, crooked letters spelled out “My family.”Kirk quickly took the drawing from him. His eyes glistened with tears.Rebecca looked at the drawing, then at Kirk, who seemed close to crying. In the end, she could not bring herself to say no.She ruffled Lenny’s hair and said, “Of course. I’ll always be here for you, Lenny.”Lenny cheered and threw himself into her arms. Kirk turned away to wipe his tears. To anyone

As I left the office, my phone suddenly vibrated in my pocket. It was the hospital.“Mr. Amell, your father started vomiting blood during treatment today. He’s been taken to the ER. We’re doing everything we can to save him.”My heart lurched. I ran into the street through the pouring rain and frantically flagged down a taxi.Between the slippery roads and heavy traffic, it took me almost an hour to reach the hospital.Mom was sobbing uncontrollably outside the ER.“Miller, the doctor says he can’t wait any longer. Your dad needs a lung transplant right away, or he won’t survive!”My hands shook as I called the doctor in charge of organ allocation. He sounded puzzled. “You didn’t know? Ms. Holden arranged for the donor lung to go to one of Mr. McGraw’s relatives last week.”I went numb.It was simply unbelievable that Rebecca had given my father’s donor lung to someone else. I had paid five hundred thousand and spent a year on the waiting list for it.I called her and demand
