Chapter 6: Cousins

"Cousins," Amelia repeated, the word tasting strange and dangerous in her mouth. "You're saying we're related."

"I'm saying," Vanessa said, smiling like she was savoring every second of this, "that my mother was Eleanor Bennett's younger sister. Which makes me a Bennett by blood, the same as you except I never had to be given away to find that out."

The words landed like a slap dressed up in silk. Amelia felt Ethan go rigid beside her, his hand hovering near her back like he wasn't sure yet whether to comfort her or brace for a fight.

"That's enough, Vanessa," Ethan said. "You didn't come here for a family reunion."

"Didn't I?" Vanessa's eyes flicked toward him, softening in a way that made Amelia's stomach turn. "I came because I care about this family, Ethan. More than you'll ever believe. I simply thought Amelia deserved to know the truth before Daniel Bennett's lawyers show up with a claim of their own."

"What claim?" Amelia asked.

Vanessa's smile sharpened. "Eleanor's will. Specifically, the clause naming her legitimate surviving descendants as beneficiaries of a trust worth considerably more than the Whitmore Group's annual revenue. A trust that's remained frozen for eight years because no one could prove Eleanor actually had a daughter." Her gaze slid deliberately to Amelia. "Until now, apparently."

Margaret, who had gone very pale near the doorway, finally found her voice. "Vanessa. This isn't the place."

"Isn't it?" Vanessa turned toward her, something cold flickering behind her polished smile. "You've known for years, Margaret. You helped bury it. I only found out myself six months ago, quite by accident, going through my mother's old letters. Imagine my surprise, learning I had a cousin all this time, and that she'd been living under my nose as Ethan's wife."

"Six months," Ethan said slowly. "That's exactly when you started reaching out again. Asking to see Noah. Asking Margaret to invite you to dinners."

"I wanted to see for myself what kind of woman fate had handed my inheritance to," Vanessa said, unbothered. "I'll admit, I expected worse."

Amelia's mind was racing too fast to fully catch up with the danger closing in around her. A trust. A will. A fortune large enough to matter more than an entire hotel empire, and two women in this room who both apparently had reasons to want that money kept quiet, or claimed entirely for themselves.

"Why bring the folder now," Amelia said carefully, "if you wanted to keep this hidden until you could use it against me?"

Something flickered across Vanessa's face the first genuine reaction Amelia had seen from her, quickly masked.

"Because someone else already knows," Vanessa said. "I received a call this morning from a reporter at Manhattan Weekly, asking questions about an anonymous tip regarding Eleanor Bennett's missing granddaughter. I didn't send that tip, Amelia. Which means someone else in this house did."

The room went very still.

Margaret's hand had gone white-knuckled around the doorframe.

"It wasn't me," Amelia said. "I only learned the name Bennett myself yesterday."

"I believe you," Vanessa said, and the sincerity in her voice was somehow more unsettling than her earlier cruelty had been. "Which is why I'd start looking closer to home, darling. Someone in this family wants the world to know exactly who you are and I don't think they're doing it to help you."

She turned to leave, pausing at the door to glance back at Ethan with an expression that lasted just a fraction too long to be casual.

"For what it's worth," she said quietly, "I really am sorry about how all of this happened, Ethan. I never wanted it to be like this."

Then she was gone, heels clicking against marble, leaving the folder behind on the entryway table like an unexploded bomb no one wanted to be the one to open.

For a long moment, nobody moved.

"Margaret," Ethan said finally, turning toward his mother. "Did you call that reporter?"

"Of course not," Margaret snapped, though her voice wavered in a way Amelia hadn't heard from her before. "I've spent eight years protecting this family from exactly this kind of scandal. Why would I invite it in myself?"

"Then who did?" Amelia asked.

Margaret's eyes darted toward the folder on the table, then away again, quick and guilty. "I don't know."

But Amelia had spent enough of her old life reading people's faces across a bakery counter to know a lie when she heard one and Margaret Whitmore, for all her composure, was lying.

Rosa appeared in the hallway a moment later, her expression tight with worry. "Mr. Whitmore, there's a call for you. Your assistant says it's urgent something about tomorrow's press conference."

"I don't have a press conference tomorrow," Ethan said.

"You do now," Rosa said quietly. "According to the message, Whitmore Group PR just received an inquiry from three different outlets, all asking about a woman named Amelia Bennett-Whitmore. They want a statement by morning."

Ethan's jaw tightened, the full weight of what was coming finally settling over the room like a held breath about to break.

"Twelve hours," he said, almost to himself. "Twelve hours before this becomes public, and we still don't know who leaked it or why."

Amelia looked down at the folder Vanessa had left behind, unopened, unbearably heavy with everything it might contain proof, lies, or something far worse than either.

She reached for it with a shaking hand.

And the moment she opened it, the first thing she saw wasn't a DNA report or a legal document at all.

It was a photograph old, faded at the edges of a young Margaret Whitmore standing beside Eleanor Bennett, both of them laughing, arms linked like sisters.

And cradled in Eleanor's arms in that photograph was a baby wrapped in a blue blanket, with a small, unmistakable birthmark on her tiny wrist.

The same birthmark Amelia had noticed on her own wrist that very morning, and dismissed as nothing at all.

The photograph trembled in Amelia's hand as she stared at the tiny wrist wrapped in a blue blanket, at the small crescent shaped mark just above where a baby's pulse would flutter. She looked down at her own wrist without meaning to. The same mark was there, pale and small, the kind of thing she'd have dismissed her whole life as an ordinary birthmark if she hadn't just been staring at its twin in a thirty-year-old photograph. "Ethan," she said quietly. "Look at this." He crossed the room in three strides and went very still when he saw it, his eyes moving between the photograph and Amelia's wrist with the focus of a man cataloguing evidence for a trial. "That's not proof of anything," Margaret said quickly, too quickly, from the doorway. "Birthmarks aren't unique. Half the babies born that decade probably had something similar." "Then why do you look like you've seen a ghost, Mother?" Ethan asked, not unkindly, but firmly. Margaret's composure finally cracked all the way

"Eleanor Bennett," Amelia repeated slowly. "The woman who died in a car accident. Your mother's old friend." Ethan set the phone down on the counter like it had suddenly grown too heavy to hold. "That's what the lab tech told my driver. Someone ordered a comparative DNA panel using archived tissue samples from Eleanor Bennett's original medical file, cross-referenced against a sample logged under your name three weeks ago." "Why would anyone compare me to a dead woman?" "I don't know," Ethan said. "But my mother clearly does." They found Margaret in the east sitting room twenty minutes later, staring out the window with a glass of sherry she hadn't touched, looking older than Amelia had seen her look all day. "Mother," Ethan said, closing the door behind them. "Eleanor Bennett." Margaret's shoulders stiffened, but she didn't turn around. "I don't see why that name concerns either of you." "Someone ordered a DNA comparison between Amelia and Eleanor," Ethan said. "Using A

"Paternity," Amelia repeated, the word landing strange in her mouth. "For whose child?" "That's what I intend to find out," Ethan said, and for the first time since she'd woken up in this life, his coldness wasn't aimed at her. It had turned outward, toward whoever had used his wife's name like a weapon. "The clinic wouldn't release the requesting party's details over the phone. I have someone driving over there now." Margaret had gone very quiet, her earlier composure replaced by something brittle, her cream gloved hands pressed flat against the marble counter like she needed it to stay upright. "Margaret," Ethan said, noticing. "You look ill. Sit down." "I'm fine," Margaret said, too quickly. "I should go. I have a luncheon." "You just said you came to talk to me." "It can wait." She was already moving toward the door, and Amelia watched her go with the growing certainty that Margaret Whitmore knew exactly whose paternity test this was, and was far more frightened of th

Amelia stared at Rosa for a long moment, the name echoing in her skull. Bennett. "Amelia?" Noah's voice again, closer now, tugging at the hem of her robe. "Cookies?" She looked down at him at the small, hopeful face that had, twenty minutes ago, still been flinching away from her and something in her chest steadied. Whatever mess the real Amelia Whitmore had left behind, whatever secret was tangled up in a fake name and a Bennett clinic file, it could wait exactly as long as it took to keep a promise to a five-year-old. "Cookies," she confirmed. "Give me ten minutes to find the kitchen. I'm still learning my way around." Noah's brow furrowed at that ,a woman who'd lived in this mansion for three years, suddenly lost in her own house ,but he didn't push it. Kids, Amelia was learning fast, accepted strange things more easily than adults did, as long as the strange thing came with cookies attached. Rosa guided her down two flights of stairs into a kitchen so large it could hav

  • The Sweetest Stepmom   Chapter 2: The Text That Wasn't Mine

"What is this," Ethan said quietly, and the quiet was worse than shouting. He turned the phone toward her, screen still glowing with Vanessa's message, like he was presenting evidence in a trial Amelia hadn't known she was standing in. He still doesn't know about the baby. Keep it that way until after the divorce is final. "I don't know," Amelia said, and it came out shaking because it was, for once, completely true. "I've never seen that message before in my life." "It's your phone." "I know how it looks" "Do you." His voice had dropped to something flat and cold, the voice of a man who had already decided the ending and was only waiting for her to catch up to it. "Whose baby, Amelia? Mine? Is that why you were so insistent on separate bedrooms the last two months because you were already carrying someone else's child and needed the excuse?" The words landed like slaps, each one aimed at a version of her that didn't exist a stranger wearing her face, who had apparently
