Amelia Carter, a struggling pastry chef from Brooklyn, dies in a car accident and wakes up as Amelia Whitmore — the notorious, villainous stepmother in a bestselling American romance novel she was reading. In the original story, Amelia is a cruel gold-digger who abuses her 5-year-old stepson Noah and cheats on her billionaire husband, Ethan Whitmore, leading to a miserable divorce and jail time. The new Amelia refuses to follow that script. Instead of being cruel, she uses her real personality to heal the broken family. She bakes Noah his favorite chocolate chip cookies, helps him with his nightmares, and teaches him what a mother's love really feels like. Slowly, Noah goes from saying "I hate you" to clinging to her and calling her "Mommy." Her cold, distant husband Ethan, who built walls around his heart after his first wife died, starts to notice the change. The empty mansion on the Upper East Side suddenly feels like a warm home again. He finds himself falling for his wife's sincerity, her laughter, and her sweetness. But their happy ending won't be easy. Amelia discovers she is actually the long-lost heiress of the Bennett Empire, Whitmore's biggest business rival. With Vanessa plotting to steal Ethan back and Margaret trying to kick her out of high society, Amelia must prove that she is not just the sweetest stepmom, but also a strong woman worthy of true love, success, and happiness.

Prologue

Ten years from now, if nothing changes...

The headline would read: WHITMORE HEIRESS SENTENCED — FROM SOCIALITE TO CONVICT.

Amelia Whitmore stood behind the defendant's table in a courtroom on Centre Street, her Chanel suit wrinkled from three sleepless nights, her once perfect hair scraped back into a knot that made her look ten years older than twenty-nine. Somewhere behind her, cameras flashed through the glass doors, hungry for the fall of a woman New York had once envied.

She did not look at the judge. She looked at the boy sitting stiffly beside his father in the front row. Noah, eight years old now, refusing to meet her eyes. He had stopped calling her anything at all three years earlier. Not "Mom." Not even her name. Just silence, the kind a child learns when the adult meant to love him instead taught him to flinch.

"In the matter of Whitmore versus Whitmore," the judge intoned, "the court finds sufficient evidence of cruelty, infidelity, and financial misconduct"

Ethan Whitmore did not look at her either. Three years of marriage, and his face had gone as cold and closed as the vault at Whitmore Tower. He had loved her once, or tried to. She had made sure that love died an ugly death, one slammed door and one cruel word at a time, until the only thing left between them was a stack of legal documents and a boy who flinched at raised voices.

Across the aisle, Vanessa Kensington sat with her hand resting lightly possessively on Ethan's arm, her smile the careful, patient smile of a woman who had waited a very long time for exactly this moment.

"...the court hereby grants full custody to the petitioner, dissolves the marriage effective immediately, and refers the matter of financial fraud to the district attorney's office."

The gavel came down like a verdict on a life wasted.

Amelia Whitmore would spend the next eighteen months in a cell upstate, visited by no one, mourned by no one, remembered by the tabloids only as a cautionary tale the gold-digger who had everything and destroyed it with her own two hands.

This is where her story ends, the narrator of that world might have said, closing the book with a satisfied little sigh. Just deserts, for a woman who never deserved a happy ending in the first place.

Six hundred miles away and several years earlier, in a small Brooklyn apartment that smelled of vanilla and burnt sugar, a very different Amelia

Amelia Carter, twenty-six, exhausted from a twelve-hour shift at a bakery that would close its doors within the month curled up in bed with her phone and opened that very book to its final chapter.

"God, she's the worst," Amelia muttered, scrolling past the villain's downfall with a mix of pity and disdain. "Some people just don't know how to appreciate what they have."

She had no idea, of course, that fate was listening.

She had no idea that in less than an hour, a truck running a red light on the Brooklyn Bridge would end her story before it had really begun and start another one entirely, in a body and a life she had just finished judging.

Some second chances come wrapped in tragedy.

Amelia Carter's was about to come wrapped in a five-year-old boy's nightmare, a billionaire's cold heart, and a chance to rewrite an ending that was never supposed to be happy at all.

This time, it would be.
