Chapter 2

Penulis: Old Serpent
I rushed forward to stop them, shouting for them to let go of Mom. But before I could even take two steps, two of the bodyguards pinned me down and held me so tightly that I couldn't move.

Mikael crouched in front of me, his eyes dark and unreadable. "I never said I wouldn't marry you. What are you getting so worked up about?"

I ignored him completely and struggled against the men with all my strength. But no matter how hard I fought, I could only watch helplessly as they dragged Mom out of the hall.

My family had no relatives here. Every guest in the audience was acquainted with the Jardine family. With such chaos unfolding, everyone just watched and gossiped. Not a single person stepped in to help.

Once Mom was gone, Mikael reached out and took my hand again like nothing had happened.

"Alright, let's continue the wedding," he said.

I yanked my hand away. "Didn't you hear what I just said? I said: This wedding is off!"

I threw the bouquet I had carefully curated to the floor and turned toward the door.

Mikael panicked and rushed over to block my way. As we struggled, Tori pulled out her deck of tarot cards again. She said soothingly, "Don't worry, Mikael. Harmony is only acting out because of her energy field. If I just adjust her frequency a little, she'll go back to normal."

I could practically feel the blood pounding in my head as fury surged within me. I lifted my hand and tried to slap Tori. "Enough with your stupid witchcraft!"

Tori squeaked and darted behind one of the bodyguards stealthily like a sneaky rat. My hand caught nothing but air.

Then, she pulled something burning out of her purse and hurled it straight at me. Instinctively, I raised my arm to block it. The flames struck the back of my hand.

There was a sharp sizzle, and then searing pain.

Mikael clapped his hands and laughed. "Tori told me that burning sage purifies a person's magnetic field. Go on. Thank her."

I clutched my burned hand. In my current state, I regret the choice that led to the scenario today. I should have ended things long ago, on the very first time Mikael believed one of her tarot readings.

On our first anniversary, I had booked a fancy restaurant a month in advance. I showed up that night in my favorite dress. With a gift I had prepared, I waited for Mikael.

Two hours passed, and he still didn't show up. I made every excuse I could think of for him, telling myself not to get angry. But it all came crashing down when I saw him sitting outside his office with Tori, eating cheap street food from a stall.

I ran up to him, demanding an explanation. He just replied calmly, almost bored, "Tori saw in the tarot that we wouldn't have a happy date tonight, so I decided to stay and keep her company instead."

I held back my anger and asked, "I called you so many times. Couldn't you have at least explained the situation over the phone?"

He took out his phone and glanced at it. Then, he said perfunctorily, "A tarot reading can't be disrupted when it is ongoing. So, I silenced it."

That was when I first realized that everything between Mikael and me revolved around Tori's tarot cards. He checked the tarot before every date and every trip we went on.

Even when I had an asthma attack and needed to get to the hospital, Tori stopped the ambulance just to ask the driver's astrology signs.

I had fought with Mikael about it before. But every time, he would back down and apologize. I'd forgive him again and again, losing myself in the illusion of his tenderness.

But not this time. I was done with compromising. I said, "Mikael, I'll say it one more time. No matter what tricks you and Tori try, I won't marry you."

  • The Tarot Cards Never Lie, but People Do   Chapter 10

In the end, I took Mom away from the Gilbert mansion and went back home with her. But then, Mom started packing her things, saying she planned to move back and reunite with Kenneth.I didn't understand at first. But Mom smiled softly and said, "If forgiving him makes your life easier in the future, then that's a good thing."Her words made me come to a realization. She was right. We had suffered for far too long.Even after I succeeded in the business scene and made a name for myself, Mom never allowed herself to relax. She feared the ups and downs of running a business and worried that I might fall someday without anyone to catch me. So, she kept working as a cleaner year after year.If forgiving Kenneth would let Mom live more comfortably, then I was willing to do it. For her sake, I could accept him as my father. I bid Mom good night and asked her to rest, promising I would help pack in the morning. But in the middle of the night, I awoke to a burning, solid weight looming righ

The moment Mikael opened his mouth to argue, Nathan slapped him squarely on the face. He barked, "Don't you dare throw your spoiled tantrums at Harmony! Apologize to her now!"Lisa, startled, immediately began trying to smooth things over. "Mikael's just been spoiled by us since he was little. He doesn't think before he speaks. Please don't take it to heart, Ms. Gilbert."Then, she shoved the stick back into Mikael's hands. "Harmony is your fiancée. Do whatever she says. If she asks you to hit Tori, just do it. Don't drag your feet."They had no idea how deep Mikael's attachment to Tori ran, but I knew. He could never bring himself to hurt her. I crouched in front of Tori and patted her cheek lightly. Then, I said, "Actually, I just realized that breaking your legs might be letting you off too easily. How about this? "You take your precious tarot deck home and use it to read your own fate. Figure out when and where I'll make you wish you were dead."Sometimes, the only thing mor

I wasn't sure what Mikael said to Tori, but not long after, she returned. Of course, she was still clutching that deck of tarot cards she never went anywhere without. Her face was plastered with a sugary smile as she laid out the cards in front of me, gesturing theatrically for me to pick a few cards. She glanced down. Within seconds, she let out a dramatic gasp. "Ms. Gilbert, this spread is absolutely divine! "You and Mikael are truly soulmates, a match made in heaven! No matter what day you choose for your wedding, it will be the luckiest and happiest day of your lives!"I couldn't help but laugh out loud this time. I didn't know much about tarot, and I couldn't read the cards to save my life, but I could tell when someone was acting. Right now, Tori was putting on the worst performance of her career.Mikael, however, didn't seem to notice or care. He looked delightfully surprised as he said, "That's wonderful, my dear! I knew we'd be the perfect match, and that we'd be happy to

Our so-called reunion with Kenneth didn't bring us happiness. If anything, it only deepened the hurt that Mom had carried all these years. She choked up, unable to speak a single word.I gestured for Kenneth to look at the faint red mark still visible on her face. "If you really care about Mom and me, then don't let the person who hit her get away with it."Kenneth's eyes widened instantly. He roared in a thunderous voice, "Who dared to lay a hand on my wife! Do they have a death wish!"I turned my head and found that Tori was nowhere to be seen. She must have realized what was coming and slipped out the back door, but Mikael and Lisa weren't so lucky. The bodyguards Kenneth brought had them surrounded. His voice came out cold and menacing, like it was from a demon straight out of hell. "What exactly did you do to my wife and daughter?"Lisa's legs gave out, and she fell to her knees before him. "You've misunderstood, Mr. Gilbert… We didn't know Harmony was your daughter!"As she

It took a long time before Mikael finally stammered a single trembling sentence. "H-How is that possible? Harmony told me she never had a father.""Nonsense!" Gavin snapped sharply, his voice echoing through the lobby. "Ms. Harmony Gilbert is our chairman's biological daughter. Watch your mouth."Mikael panicked, and his entire body began to shake. "Harmony… She lied to me. I thought she would never lie to me."He turned toward the glass door and met my gaze. For that one brief second, our eyes locked, and I didn't look away.I had never meant to deceive him. To me, my dad had been dead to me for a long time. The Gilbert family was an affluent and influential family. They had been around for over a hundred years. On the other hand, Mom had only been a hot-dog vendor. Kenneth had fallen in love with her, so he hid his identity and pretended to be poor just to marry her. Later, I was born. When I was little, we didn't have much. But I had a happy life. It was because I had parent

Mikael and Lisa hurried outside with fawning smiles plastered across their faces.Inside, Tori was practically bouncing with excitement. "Oh my god! The chairman of Gilbert Group just returned to the country a few days ago! Every major company's been trying to meet with him. None of them even made it through the door."Now, their chairman himself is visiting Jardine Group. Harmony, do you see now just how powerful the Jardine family is? It's such a pity, though. Yesterday was your only chance to marry into the Jardine family, and you threw it away."Once the Jardine and Gilbert families start working together, Mikael won't bother to look at you even if you kneel and beg him."I gave her a cold, mocking smile. "Didn't you realize that my last name is Gilbert?"She froze for a second, then burst into laughter. "Oh, Harmony. Have you lost your mind? Sure, you share the same surname, but you're just the daughter of a lowly cleaner. You and the Gilbert family are worlds apart."By the
