Chapter 3

Autor: Until September
That night, Andy knocked on my door.

He got straight to the point. “There’s an arranged marriage between me and Sophia. When you come from families like ours, a lot of things are beyond your control.”

Instead, I asked, “When did I sign that nondisclosure agreement?”

Andy’s eyes flickered a little. “Three years ago.”

I was startled for a moment. I had worked the hardest for that year and had saved money like there was no tomorrow.

I stayed up working for an entire week and nearly passed out at the bus stop.

When Andy heard something was wrong with my voice over the phone, he rushed over that same night with a stack of documents with him.

“It’s a nondisclosure agreement for a new company project. A direct family member has to sign as a guarantor.”

I was a little puzzled. “But we’re not even married yet.”

He sounded so certain when he replied to me, “Isn’t that just a matter of time?”

I happily signed my name.

Just when I thought Andy had finally made a place for me in his future, he had already planned to marry another woman.

There was a trace of reluctance in his gaze.

“As long as you behave yourself, you can still remain by my side.

“I won’t treat you badly. Pick any house you want. I’ll give you one hundred thousand dollars every month.”

I stared at him in shock. “Do you want me to be your mistress?”

Andy did not seem to think there was anything wrong with that.

“You’re always saying how exhausting your job is. Staying by my side would definitely be easier than working—”

Before he finished his sentence, I slapped him across the face.

He knew perfectly well that my mother had developed depression after being forced to become a mistress.

He knew that was the one thing I hated the most. Yet, he still said it matter-of-factly.

Andy’s expression darkened. When he saw my teary eyes, his tone softened.

“Quennie, think about what your mother went through all those years. Do you really want to follow in her footsteps? At least I won’t abandon you the way your father abandoned your mother.”

I kicked and shoved him until I forced him out of the room.

Little did I know the next day, my mother, Mary, called me in a furious tone.

“How could you do something like this? I’m so ashamed to have even given birth to a disgrace like you!”

It was only then that I knew someone had secretly photographed Andy coming to my hotel and turned the pictures into a post on a social media account.

The headline read: Freshly Married Tycoon Secretly Keeps a Mistress on the Side.

The comments were filled with insults. Someone even dug up my phone number and ID. A flood of vicious harassment came pouring in.

Mary cried on the other end of the phone.

“Quennie, why did you become someone like that? You know a mistress is the one thing I’ve hated the most my entire life.”

I could only explain, “Mom, I’m not a mistress—”

Mary’s voice abruptly turned shrill.

“You’re still lying! If you’re not his mistress, why did Andy go to your hotel to see you?!”

I had no way to explain that. All I could do was post evidence online proving that I was not a mistress.

For a moment, the internet descended into chaos.

They quickly reported and took down my post.

Just then, Sophia came for me. “Quennie, we need to talk.”

For the longest time, I thought the problem between Andy and me was the long-distance relationship.Later, I realized that the real problem was we simply saw the world differently. He never understood what I wanted, nor had he ever tried to understand me.The moment he started pretending to be poor, there was already a wall between us.“I don’t like you anymore. I don’t love you anymore. The moment you lie to me, there’s no longer any future for us.”Andy’s face immediately went pale. He could not help stepping forward to explain himself.“Quennie, I can explain this. I didn’t mean to lie to you. You said that if I were rich, you’d break up with me, so I…”I froze. It was true that Andy had hinted at it more than once. That time, I always thought he was joking. I never imagined he actually meant it.“When I was in college, my family deliberately cut off my allowance and made me support myself. Back then, I really didn’t have any money.“Later, I wanted to tell you the truth, b

Quennie's POVBy the time I learned about the news, I had already settled down in a small town. After jumping into the river that day, I made it to the other side of the riverbank. As far as those people were concerned, I was already “dead”.That was the only way Andy would retaliate on my behalf.I snapped my SIM card in half and replaced it with a new one. I started a new life.No one cared about the rumors circulating online in a remote area like this. I easily found a job in a small company.Whenever I had free time, I searched for news about Andy and his group.[The Brandt Group’s stock price plummeted as Darren Brandt faces investigation for bribery.]My name appeared in the comments of almost every article.Strangers filled the comments with messages defending me, but I could not bring myself to feel happy about it. I turned off my phone and stopped reading the news and messages.I lived a slow and easy life in this town. After work, I sat on a lounge chair in the

That following afternoon, Andy finally returned to the Ferrell family’s mansion. His mother, Abigail, snorted at him.“Have you had enough of causing a fuss? You actually walked out of your grandmother-in-law’s birthday banquet without hesitation last night. You really have some nerve!“You abandoned your wife for a woman of questionable character! How did I end up with a son like you?! Say sorry to Sophia now!”Instead, Andy replied to her, “I want a divorce.”Abigail stared at him in disbelief. “Have you lost your mind? You want a divorce for some sort of woman whose background you know nothing about?“Whatever you think of her, Sophia is your wife. Have you forgotten what you promised us back then?”Andy snapped angrily, “That was something you arranged for me!“When did you ever ask me if I wanted it? Five years ago, you told me I had no choice but to be subjected to an arranged marriage.“You even threatened me! You also used Quennie’s family to threaten me!”“Enough!” A

Andy instantly shot to his feet. The chair tumbled backward with a deafening crash. The guests at the table turned to look at him.Andy’s mother’s expression immediately changed. “Andy, what’re you doing?!”Sophia turned around to look at him. The warmth in her eyes instantly hardened into a warning glare. But Andy could care much less about anything. He turned around and headed outside.“Andy!” Sophia shouted behind him. Her voice turned shrill.“If you dare to walk out of our family banquet, you’ll bear the consequences!”By the time he reached the riverbank, they had put up the police cordon.Andy stared at the scene before him in disbelief.“Haven’t you found her yet? What in the world are you people doing?”The rescue workers tried their best to calm him down. “Sir, please stay calm and don’t interfere with the rescue operation.”Andy stared at the muddy river as the current churned violently. His mind went completely blank.More and more bystanders gathered along the

Third-person POV“What did you say?”The assistant’s face went pale as he handed over his phone to Andy. Someone already edited the footage into a video clip.Andy’s chest tightened. He could care much less about others as he charged out of the room.Sophia’s expression instantly darkened. “You’re not going anywhere. Did you forget what you promised me yesterday?”Sally took a couple of glances at the video. “The video could be fake. It costs almost nothing to fabricate something like this these days.“Besides, her mother is still alive. Why would she leave her mother behind?” Upon hearing those words, Andy felt more relieved.“They’re right. Quennie has always been strong. How can she just decide to end everything with a whim?”It had to be fake again. After all, Quennie had made a fuss over things like this in the past. During their years of long-distance relationship, there had been times when she could not reach him by phone, and she would send dozens of messages threa

“I’m sorry that the incident circulated online has caused you trouble. I’m here to apologize on behalf of my friend.“But the post you made has caused a lot of problems for both the Ferrell family and my family. We need you to go live and publicly admit that you’re the mistress.”While Mary’s furious accusations still rang in my ears, Sophia’s words were no different from holding out a knife and asking me to drive it straight into my heart.“What if I refuse?”A trace of coldness showed up in her eyes.“Have you forgotten about that piece of paper you signed? If you interfere with our marriage, do I need to remind you how much you’ll have to pay?“If you apologize publicly on the livestream, I’ll compensate you an additional five hundred thousand dollars.”I agreed. “Fine. I’ll apologize.”The moment the livestream started, a flood of people poured in and cussed at me.The corners of my lips twitched. “I’m sorry.
