Chapter 3

Author: Cece West
I held the phone further away and replied calmly, "I told you last night. I did it."

Zachary was breathing hard on the other end of the line, clearly furious.

"Cut the crap. You spend all day hovering around the stove. Since when do you have that kind of pull? You must've gone to the school and made a scene, dragging my name through the mud.

"Rebecca Tanner, I was wrong about you. You've turned into a complete shrew. You'd better get to the school immediately and apologize to the admissions office. Fix this situation, or I'm filing for a divorce today!"

Hearing him use divorce as a threat finally broke my composure, and I laughed out loud.

"Fine. I'll see you at the courthouse at 2:00 pm. Don't chicken out."

Before he could respond, I ended the call and blocked his number.

At 2:00 pm sharp, I arrived at the courthouse. I waited for 30 minutes, but Zachary never showed.

I wasn't surprised.

Zachary was flat broke. If we really got a divorce, he wouldn't even have a place to stay.

Whenever he brought up divorce, he was counting on the fact that, for the past eight years, I had yielded to him every time. Unfortunately for him, that lovestruck version of me was gone.

I turned and went back to the office, continuing to work through the stack of pending files.

Meanwhile, Zachary was standing outside the gates of the research institute, sweating under the sun.

He had gone there that morning to follow up on a major project, only to discover that his access card no longer worked. The security guard stopped him and informed him that his credentials had been revoked.

Zachary immediately began making a scene, accusing the guard of looking down on him.

In the middle of the commotion, his direct superior, Winston, hurried out.

"Mr. Yates, you're finally here," Zachary said as he scurried over to greet him. "This guard won't let me in. My project is at a critical stage. Who's going to take the fall if our progress is delayed?

Winston shot him an icy look. "Don't bother coming in, Zachary. Your project has been suspended indefinitely."

Zachary froze, disbelief written all over his face. "Suspended? Why? This project was on track for a national award!"

Winston sneered. "An award? With what funding? Our largest sponsor withdrew their investment this morning, and they were very specific about their reasons. They're pulling the plug because of you!"

Zachary was stunned. "Which sponsor? I've never even met them. How could I have offended anyone?"

Winston jabbed a finger at his face, shouting, "How the hell should I know? Her assistant called us personally. She said that you're a man of poor character and even worse morals! I don't care what kind of mess you've gotten yourself into, Zachary, but the sponsor's attending our annual gala tonight.

"You'd better figure out a way to get on her good side and convince her to reinstate the funding. Otherwise, you can pack your bags and be out by tomorrow morning!"

With that, Winston turned and walked away, leaving Zachary standing there, his mind buzzing.

He couldn't wrap his mind around it. How did a respected researcher like himself suddenly offend a sponsor he had never even met?

Just then, Amelia called.

"Zachary, where are you? How did the school situation go? I just checked, and they said we need the actual deed to a house in the school district."

Fuming and on edge, Zachary snapped, "The deed's with Rebecca. I don't know what's gotten into that lunatic today, but she's even blocked my number."

On the other end of the line, Amelia began crying.

"Then what are we going to do? Are my kids going to end up in one of those low-end schools? Zachary, you have a PhD. You're brilliant, so surely you can figure something out, right?"

Her flattery successfully stroked his pride.

Zachary yelled, "Your Honor, I spent eight years getting my PhD. I'm a valuable asset to this country! You can't do this to me! Rebecca has more money than she knows what to do with. She doesn't care about the money. She's just trying to destroy me!"The judge slammed the gavel down, his brows furrowed."Defendant, control yourself! This court rules on evidence, not on your academic credentials. Your actions constitute a gross case of fraud and a clear breach of contract."The final verdict was delivered. The divorce was granted on the spot.Zachary was to leave with nothing. He was required to repay the 1.2 million dollars he had funneled to Amelia, and in addition, reimburse me for the research funding I had personally sponsored over the past eight years. The total came to 15 million dollars.Zachary's eyes rolled back, and he collapsed on the spot.Unfortunately, fainting didn't change anything as enforcement proceedings began immediately.Although Amelia had already vanishe

"I'm sorry… I really am! That bitch Amelia ran off. She stole my money! She never loved me, Rebecca. It was all a lie! You're the only one who ever truly cared about me. Please, let's just get back together!" Zachary cried as he spoke, punctuating his pleas by viciously slapping his own face. Each strike landed hard, and it didn't take long before blood started seeping from the corner of his mouth."I was a fool! I let that woman cloud my judgment!" he cried. "For the sake of our daughter, please, just give me one more chance! Penny needs her father!"The moment he mentioned our daughter, something in me snapped.I handed her to Linda and had her take her to the car first, then walked over and stopped in front of him, looking down at him."Oh, now you're worried about Penny needing her father? Where was that concern when you let those bastards take her place at elementary school? Did it occur to you that you were her father when you claimed that delaying her education for a year w

"I want to go back to that massive house from yesterday! I want to play with that castle!" one of the young boys yelled.Amelia was already on edge, and with the kids shouting over each other, she snapped and slapped the oldest boy across the face."Shut up! Keep it up, and I'll throw all of you out!"The oldest boy instantly burst into tears.Zachary sat on the edge of the bed, his hands buried in his hair, spiraling into a state of absolute agitation."Why are you hitting the kids? Aren't things annoying enough already?"Amelia whipped around, glaring at him viciously. The sweet, harmless mask she used to wear had completely fallen away, revealing her true, ugly side."What I do with my own kids is none of your business! You're an absolute loser, Zachary! I actually thought you were some big-shot scientist, but it turns out you're just a pathetic loser living off a woman! "And not only that, you didn't even bother to figure out what your wife was capable of. Is there even a

The next morning, I returned to the apartment with my legal team and a moving company. I had already sent someone over the previous night to replace the biometric locks. As soon as I stepped out of the elevator, I found Zachary and Amelia huddled by the door with the three kids.Zachary looked disheveled. His hair was messy, his suit wrinkled, and his eyes were bloodshot. The moment he saw me, he lunged forward like a drowning man grabbing at a lifeline."Rebecca, you're finally back! Why won't the lock open? Look, stop playing games, okay? The kids have been out here in the cold all night."My bodyguard stepped forward and shoved him back.I gave my lawyer, Jacob Lindt, a subtle look.Jacob stepped out from behind me and pulled a stack of documents from his briefcase."Mr. Sanders, here are the finalized divorce papers and a formal notice to vacate the premises. This property is registered under a corporation owned solely by Ms. Tanner. You have no legal claim to it whatsoeve

Zachary's hand froze against his cheek. He stared at Winston, who was practically bowing before me, and it was as if his mind had completely shut down. The entire ballroom fell silent.Zachary's eyes darted between Winston and me as he stammered, "M-Mr. Yates… what did you just call her? Her name is Rebecca Tanner. She's just a housewife who stays home with the kids!"Winston was shaking with anger. He turned and kicked Zachary hard in the leg."Shut up! Ms. Tanner is the institute's largest sponsor. Every cent of your funding over the last eight years of your PhD came directly from her personal donations! And you think you can talk to her like that? Who do you think you are?"Those words struck Zachary like a bolt of lightning. His legs gave out, and he almost collapsed to the floor.Amelia was just as stunned. She clutched his arm tightly, her voice trembling. "Zachary, what's going on? Didn't you say she was unemployed and was completely dependent on you?"I let out a quie

Zachary clenched his jaw."Relax, Amy. I'm going to a high-end gala tonight. Plenty of bigwigs are going to be there. If I can smooth things over with that sponsor, school won't even be an issue. I'll just buy you a place in the right district."Dress up tonight and come with me. Rebecca's completely out of place for an event at this level anyway."…At 8:00 pm, the top-floor ballroom of Hotel Vinda was already filled with people. The research institute had reserved the entire venue for its annual academic fundraising gala.Zachary walked in wearing a rented suit, bringing Amelia along with him. She had clearly put effort into her appearance, wearing a revealing red evening gown as she held onto his arm, her eyes wandering across the room."Zachary, this place is incredible," she said. "I've never been anywhere like this before."He lifted his chin, pleased with himself. "This is nothing. Once I secure funding for my project, we'll be in places like this all the time."Zachary
