Chapter 3

Auteur: Seva
He crouched beside me and examined the cut on my forehead, frowning slightly.

“Why can't you be more careful?”

There was a note of blame in his voice, as though the whole thing had been my fault.

“Can't you just behave yourself for once? I've already got enough to deal with because of Aria. I don't need you making things harder.”

I stared at him.

Whatever love I'd still been holding on to died right then.

Last night, I'd developed a low fever. Every bone in my body ached, and I lay curled beneath the covers, shivering uncontrollably.

Shane came in and felt my forehead.

For a moment, something flickered in his eyes. But whatever hesitation he'd felt quickly disappeared.

He took out his phone and showed me a video.

Aria was lying in a hospital bed, her face deathly pale. She was coughing so violently, with traces of blood around her mouth.

“Look at her.”

Shane's voice came from above me, strained with emotion.

“Every time she coughs, it kills me to watch. Wendy, we have to save her.”

Somehow, he'd made his suffering my responsibility.

He'd turned our marriage into a sacrifice.

And I was the one being sacrificed.

This morning, he brought me a bowl of chicken soup and forced me to drink every last drop.

“You need to build up your strength.”

He gently wiped the grease from the corner of my mouth, his voice so tender it was almost cruel.

“That way, you'll last longer. Aria's going to need you.”

I stared at his face, just inches from mine.

My stomach churned, and I nearly threw up.

That afternoon, he received a phone call.

His voice immediately softened, though I could hear the concern in it.

“You're getting discharged tomorrow? Okay. Come stay here so I can take care of you. Don't worry. I've got everything arranged.”

When he hung up, he turned to me.

“Aria's getting discharged tomorrow. She's moving in with us.”

I froze.

It felt as though all the blood in my body had turned to ice.

“This is our home...” I whispered, my voice trembling.

He came over and cupped my face, gently brushing his thumb across my cheek.

His touch was soft, but his eyes were cold.

“Wendy, be a good girl.”

He looked straight into my eyes, speaking slowly and deliberately.

“Don't make things difficult for me. Right now, the best thing you can do is stay quiet and out of the way.”

So that was all I was good for now.

Keeping his first love alive, even if it killed me.

He'd taken my phone, cutting off my last connection to the outside world.

The silence was unbearable.

All I could hear was the sound of my own heart breaking.

And then, as he left, the unmistakable click of the lock.

—

The following afternoon, I heard the door unlock.

I was propped up against the headboard, too numb to react.

Shane came in carrying someone in his arms.

She was wrapped snugly in a blanket, with only her pale, delicate face visible.

He held her as carefully as if she were the most precious thing in the world.

The concern and tenderness in his eyes were things I hadn't seen in a long time.

He carried her straight into the guest bedroom next to ours.

“We're home, Aria,” he murmured. “From now on, I'll be right here with you every day.”

My broken fingers still throbbed, a constant reminder of how ridiculous this whole situation was.

He didn't even glance my way.

Only after getting Aria settled did Shane return to our bedroom.

He noticed the untouched food on the table and frowned.

“Why haven't you eaten?” he asked impatiently. “What are you going to do if your health gets even worse?”

I said nothing.

I just looked at him.

My stare seemed to make him uncomfortable. When he spoke again, his tone softened slightly.

“Aria's very weak. She needs plenty of rest, so don't bother her unless it's necessary.”

He paused before adding, “If you need anything, let me know.”

Then he turned and went back to the guest room.

He didn't close the door all the way.

I could hear him gently coaxing Aria to take her medicine, asking whether she was too hot or too cold.

All that affection he'd once reserved for me now belonged to another woman.

And I was little more than a ghost, wandering through the house I'd once called home.

My own home had become my prison.

Sometimes, I'd run into Aria in the hallway.

She'd be wearing silk pajamas, leaning weakly against the doorframe.

Whenever she saw me, she'd give a small nod and greet me politely.

“Hi, Wendy.”

But her eyes would drift over my bandaged hand, then my pale face, before settling on Shane as he hurried toward her.

“Shane, I'm feeling a little dizzy...” she'd say in a sweet, needy voice.

He'd immediately rush over and steady her, his face filled with concern.

Then he'd shoot me an irritated look, as if I were somehow responsible for making her dizzy.

The whole ugly truth was finally out.Shane had nearly drained his own wife of everything she had, all for a woman who'd plotted to kill him, then pretended to be his savior when her plan failed. The irony was almost laughable.I listened without feeling a thing.“Okay,” I said.Shane froze. He clearly hadn't expected that response. He stared at me, as though he were finally seeing just how little I felt for him. There was no hatred in my eyes. No resentment. Not even a trace of pity.Nothing.He collapsed completely, the last flicker of hope fading from his eyes. All that remained was despair. He finally understood.I'd stopped caring about him so completely that he wasn't even worth hating anymore.I didn't spare him another glance.I turned and walked out, closing the door on the sickening wreck he'd become. At the entrance to the alley, a black sedan was parked by the curb. Two tall men were dragging Aria out of the car.She was screaming and struggling, her hair

“Just looking at you makes me sick! You're broke, you're powerless, and you're practically dead already! You think I'm going down with you?”Shane hunched over, coughing violently. He reached for her arm, his voice full of desperation.“Aria, you can't do this. You said...”“What did I say?”Aria jerked her arm away so forcefully that he stumbled backward and nearly fell.“I said I liked you because you had money and power! What do you have now, huh? Besides that pathetic body that's barely holding together, what have you got left?”Every word stripped away what little dignity he had left.“No. You said you saved my life...”Shane struggled to breathe, each word coming out with a wet, painful rasp.“Saved your life?”Aria burst into laughter, her voice rising sharply through the quiet night.“If you hadn't had money back then, you think I would've wanted anything to do with you? If I'd known you'd turn out to be this useless, I would've just let you die in that car!”Shane

I'd had enough.“Shut up!” I snapped, my voice ice-cold.“Yours? I'm the one who gets to decide now.”I turned to Mr. Black without a moment's hesitation.“His wealth.”Shane jerked his head up from the floor, his eyes widening in absolute horror.“No!”Mr. Black broke into a grin and swept one bony finger through the air.The bronze scale erupted in brilliant light.A thick stream of golden energy was forcibly pulled from Shane's body and drawn into the scale. One side dropped sharply with a heavy, resounding thud.Almost immediately, the phone in Shane's pocket began vibrating nonstop. The screen lit up with a flood of incoming calls and text messages, casting a pale glow across his ashen face.‘Mr. Watson! We've got a disaster! The stock price is crashing!’‘The bank is demanding immediate repayment of all our loans!’‘The auditors just showed up!’‘Every single project has been suspended!’It was over.Everything he'd built was gone.Shane lay sprawled on the flo

He was lying in the guest bedroom until Aria complained that his coughing was disturbing her rest and kicked him out.Now he had no choice but to curl up on the living room couch, buried under thick blankets and still shivering from the cold.Aria hardly came out of her room anymore.Even when she did, she kept her distance, frowning slightly and covering her nose and mouth with a silk handkerchief, as though she were afraid of catching something from him.Funny how her dizzy spells seemed to have become less frequent, too.Whenever Shane called for her, she took her time answering. And when she brought him water, it was always either too hot or too cold.“Aria...” Shane's voice was painfully hoarse, almost pleading. “Could you get me my medicine?”Aria was busy examining her complexion in a small mirror. She clicked her tongue impatiently.“Just a minute! Can't you see I'm busy?”She took her sweet time before finally bringing him the bottle, setting it down with an exaggera

I was still terribly weak. But somehow, breathing felt a little easier now.I don't know how much time passed before I heard someone fumbling with a key outside the front door. The lock rattled for what seemed like forever before the door finally burst open.Heavy, dragging footsteps followed, along with harsh, labored breathing.Shane was back.He practically collapsed into the living room. His face was white as a sheet, his lips tinged blue, and cold sweat covered his forehead. His clothes were soaked through, and he was so weak he had to lean against the wall just to stay on his feet.He looked nothing like the well-dressed, domineering man who'd left the house that morning.Aria was the first to rush over.“Shane! What's wrong?”She tried to support him, but his weight nearly sent her stumbling to the floor. Her slender arms weren't nearly strong enough to hold him up.Shane barely acknowledged her.His eyes were fixed on the narrow opening of my bedroom door.I stoo

Mr. Black's words stirred something deep inside me, breaking through the numbness I'd felt for so long.Shane spun around. The moment he spotted me standing in the shadows, his expression darkened. He instinctively started toward me, but his steps were unsteady. It was as though taking off that ring had already drained some of his strength.“Wendy! What are you doing here?”His voice carried that familiar note of disapproval, along with a hint of panic he couldn't quite hide. He was trying to intimidate me, just as he always had.But I didn't look at him.Instead, I looked past him, straight into Mr. Black's unreadable eyes.“His health.”My throat was dry, but my voice came out steady.“I want to take all of his health. Every last bit.”The room went silent.Shane stared at me as though he hadn't heard me correctly.Or perhaps he simply couldn't believe what I'd said. His anger gave way to shock.“Wendy Luther! Do you have any idea what you're saying?!”Mr. Black's unse
