Chapter 4

Auteur: Seva
At dinner, Shane brought out a pot of rich, fragrant soup he'd spent hours preparing.

He carefully blew on each spoonful before feeding it to Aria.

“Have some more. It's good for you.”

His attention was entirely on her.

Across the table, I sat eating a bowl of plain, watery oatmeal that tasted like nothing.

After a few spoonfuls, Aria gently pushed his hand away and frowned.

“Shane, I can't eat any more...” she said breathlessly.

“Just a little more. Look how thin you've gotten.”

He was endlessly patient with her.

“I really can't.”

She started coughing softly, her eyes turning red.

Shane immediately began patting her back, his face full of concern and guilt.

“Okay, okay. No more. Don't force yourself. I don't want you choking.”

He set the bowl of soup aside without a second thought.

The same soup I wasn't even allowed to touch.

I lowered my eyes to the watery oatmeal in front of me.

Suddenly, I couldn't stomach another bite.

That night, my throat felt dry, and I coughed a few times. After everything I'd been through lately, I must have caught a slight cold.

Shane pushed open the bedroom door, looking furious.

“Can you keep it down?”

He kept his voice low, scolding me like a child.

“Aria just fell asleep. She's a light sleeper, and you're going to wake her up.”

I stared at him.

I didn't even have the energy to argue anymore.

Was my heartbeat too loud for his precious Aria, too?

Was I breathing too loudly?

My lack of reaction seemed to make him even angrier.

“Can't you be a little more considerate? You know how sick she is!”

He slammed the door behind him.

I sat alone in the darkness, too numb to cry.

So this was what it felt like when there was nothing left to break.

No overwhelming grief. No unbearable heartache.

Just emptiness.

Whatever tiny bit of hope I'd still been holding on to after ten years of marriage was finally gone.

His words had crushed the last of it.

Maybe that was for the best.

I wasn't hurting over him anymore.

There was still a little sadness left, though.

Not for Shane.

For the woman I'd once been.

The foolish woman who'd loved him with everything she had for ten whole years.

That version of me had died against the cold counter of that pawnshop.

She'd died a little more every time he took something from me as though he had every right to it.

From the room next door, I could faintly hear Shane speaking to Aria in that gentle voice of his.

Then came her soft laughter.

I reached down and touched my right hand, which still hadn't stopped aching.

Slowly, I dug my fingernails into my palm.

My chance came sooner than I'd expected.

Shane was so busy taking care of Aria, who couldn't stop coughing, that he forgot to lock my bedroom door when he went out to buy medicine.

I quietly pushed the door open.

The hallway was empty.

My heart beat steadily in my chest.

I wasn't afraid.

I'd never been more certain of what I needed to do.

Barefoot, I slipped out of the house without making a sound.

I followed the route I remembered until I reached that dark alley.

The pawnshop was still there.

Above the entrance, three words glowed faintly on the sign.

The Time Pawnshop.

I hid in the shadows beside the door and held my breath.

Just as I'd expected, Shane was inside.

I knew his silhouette better than anyone's.

Yet looking at him now, he seemed like a complete stranger.

He carefully took something out of his pocket and placed it on the cold bronze counter.

He had somehow taken my wedding band.

Then he did something that made my blood run cold.

He slipped his wedding band off his finger.

It caught the dim light as he held it up.

Without a moment's hesitation, he placed it on the counter.

“Our wedding rings” he said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “I want ten more years of life for her.”

I could almost hear the last piece of my heart shattering.

He was even willing to pawn our wedding ring.

Anything to keep Aria alive.

Ten years.

We'd spent ten years together, and to him, even the symbol of our marriage was something he could trade away.

Mr. Black picked up the rings.

A faint look of amusement crossed his gaunt face.

But instead of placing it on the scale, he slowly turned toward the entrance.

Toward the spot where I was hiding.

His eyes seemed to pierce straight through the darkness.

A strange smile spread across his pale lips.

“A transaction this large requires an exchange from both parties.”

Shane whipped around.

The moment he saw me, his expression darkened.

But Mr. Black wasn't looking at him anymore.

His eyes stayed fixed on mine.

When he spoke, his voice was hoarse, yet every word came through perfectly clearly.

“Now, what would you like to pawn of his?”

The whole ugly truth was finally out.Shane had nearly drained his own wife of everything she had, all for a woman who'd plotted to kill him, then pretended to be his savior when her plan failed. The irony was almost laughable.I listened without feeling a thing.“Okay,” I said.Shane froze. He clearly hadn't expected that response. He stared at me, as though he were finally seeing just how little I felt for him. There was no hatred in my eyes. No resentment. Not even a trace of pity.Nothing.He collapsed completely, the last flicker of hope fading from his eyes. All that remained was despair. He finally understood.I'd stopped caring about him so completely that he wasn't even worth hating anymore.I didn't spare him another glance.I turned and walked out, closing the door on the sickening wreck he'd become. At the entrance to the alley, a black sedan was parked by the curb. Two tall men were dragging Aria out of the car.She was screaming and struggling, her hair

“Just looking at you makes me sick! You're broke, you're powerless, and you're practically dead already! You think I'm going down with you?”Shane hunched over, coughing violently. He reached for her arm, his voice full of desperation.“Aria, you can't do this. You said...”“What did I say?”Aria jerked her arm away so forcefully that he stumbled backward and nearly fell.“I said I liked you because you had money and power! What do you have now, huh? Besides that pathetic body that's barely holding together, what have you got left?”Every word stripped away what little dignity he had left.“No. You said you saved my life...”Shane struggled to breathe, each word coming out with a wet, painful rasp.“Saved your life?”Aria burst into laughter, her voice rising sharply through the quiet night.“If you hadn't had money back then, you think I would've wanted anything to do with you? If I'd known you'd turn out to be this useless, I would've just let you die in that car!”Shane

I'd had enough.“Shut up!” I snapped, my voice ice-cold.“Yours? I'm the one who gets to decide now.”I turned to Mr. Black without a moment's hesitation.“His wealth.”Shane jerked his head up from the floor, his eyes widening in absolute horror.“No!”Mr. Black broke into a grin and swept one bony finger through the air.The bronze scale erupted in brilliant light.A thick stream of golden energy was forcibly pulled from Shane's body and drawn into the scale. One side dropped sharply with a heavy, resounding thud.Almost immediately, the phone in Shane's pocket began vibrating nonstop. The screen lit up with a flood of incoming calls and text messages, casting a pale glow across his ashen face.‘Mr. Watson! We've got a disaster! The stock price is crashing!’‘The bank is demanding immediate repayment of all our loans!’‘The auditors just showed up!’‘Every single project has been suspended!’It was over.Everything he'd built was gone.Shane lay sprawled on the flo

He was lying in the guest bedroom until Aria complained that his coughing was disturbing her rest and kicked him out.Now he had no choice but to curl up on the living room couch, buried under thick blankets and still shivering from the cold.Aria hardly came out of her room anymore.Even when she did, she kept her distance, frowning slightly and covering her nose and mouth with a silk handkerchief, as though she were afraid of catching something from him.Funny how her dizzy spells seemed to have become less frequent, too.Whenever Shane called for her, she took her time answering. And when she brought him water, it was always either too hot or too cold.“Aria...” Shane's voice was painfully hoarse, almost pleading. “Could you get me my medicine?”Aria was busy examining her complexion in a small mirror. She clicked her tongue impatiently.“Just a minute! Can't you see I'm busy?”She took her sweet time before finally bringing him the bottle, setting it down with an exaggera

I was still terribly weak. But somehow, breathing felt a little easier now.I don't know how much time passed before I heard someone fumbling with a key outside the front door. The lock rattled for what seemed like forever before the door finally burst open.Heavy, dragging footsteps followed, along with harsh, labored breathing.Shane was back.He practically collapsed into the living room. His face was white as a sheet, his lips tinged blue, and cold sweat covered his forehead. His clothes were soaked through, and he was so weak he had to lean against the wall just to stay on his feet.He looked nothing like the well-dressed, domineering man who'd left the house that morning.Aria was the first to rush over.“Shane! What's wrong?”She tried to support him, but his weight nearly sent her stumbling to the floor. Her slender arms weren't nearly strong enough to hold him up.Shane barely acknowledged her.His eyes were fixed on the narrow opening of my bedroom door.I stoo

Mr. Black's words stirred something deep inside me, breaking through the numbness I'd felt for so long.Shane spun around. The moment he spotted me standing in the shadows, his expression darkened. He instinctively started toward me, but his steps were unsteady. It was as though taking off that ring had already drained some of his strength.“Wendy! What are you doing here?”His voice carried that familiar note of disapproval, along with a hint of panic he couldn't quite hide. He was trying to intimidate me, just as he always had.But I didn't look at him.Instead, I looked past him, straight into Mr. Black's unreadable eyes.“His health.”My throat was dry, but my voice came out steady.“I want to take all of his health. Every last bit.”The room went silent.Shane stared at me as though he hadn't heard me correctly.Or perhaps he simply couldn't believe what I'd said. His anger gave way to shock.“Wendy Luther! Do you have any idea what you're saying?!”Mr. Black's unse
