Chapter 6

Author: Roaring River
I collapsed, blood spilling from the corner of my mouth. It was a ghastly sight to anyone watching.

The crowd gathered around, with one person stepping forward to attempt resuscitation.

Jonah felt as if lightning had struck him. Almost instantly, he shoved through the crowd and rushed to my side.

He crouched down, his trembling fingers brushing against my face.

It had only been a year since we had last met, yet my cheeks were gaunt, and streaks of gray hair had grown among the normal hair.

I had always cared about my looks. Back then, I would fuss endlessly over a single gray strand, insisting on dyeing it. If my skin had loosened the slightest bit, I would lock myself in the gym all day.

But now, all my former vitality and polish were gone. I had let myself waste away into frailty and pallor.

Jonah's eyes reddened, his gaze brimming with grief. "Why… Why did you hide the truth? Why didn't you say anything?"

"Please step aside. We need to begin emergency treatment on Ms. Vega,"

"I'm not some hero. I'm just an ordinary undercover journalist. As long as what I do has meaning, whether I stand in the light or in the shadows, I'll gladly endure it. For that, I'll gladly sacrifice everything."I turned my gaze toward Crystal. She trembled in fear upon feeling my eyes on her."D-Don't… Don't come any closer."I looked away and calmly said, "As for Crystal—this may be a world of fiction, but strict laws exist here. There's no need for any of you to pass judgment on her. The law will give her the punishment she deserves."When I was done speaking, murmurs rippled through the audience, and faint sighs followed."This so-called vicious side character must've been given the wrong script. She's not vicious one bit…""Who knows? Maybe in some other novel, Rose is the true female lead."The trial ended with me being declared innocent. As compensation, during the final days of my life, the court promised to fulfill all my wishes unconditionally. But unfortunately, no

"See this? It's a slow-acting poison smuggled from overseas. It will eat away at your organs bit by bit, and in half a month, you'll be dead."My heart dropped. "Why… Why would you do this? Aren't we sisters?""Sisters?"Crystal laughed as if she had heard the funniest joke in the world, her eyes brimming with undisguised mockery."We're not even related by blood. Who would want to be sisters with you? If I don't kill you, Jonah will always think of you. I'm the female lead in his life, so why should you play such an important part?"Why should you be his eternal first love? To tell you the truth, Rose, I never gave Jonah that letter you wrote. Every plan you laid out in it, I memorized them all."That's why the day you delivered the children to the black market, I 'happened' to take Jonah out for a picnic nearby. Do you know what they called me? They called me their lucky star, the hero behind the success of this case!"You never expected your man and your achievements to becom

The judge looked at me, his expression much gentler than before."Ms. Vega, are you feeling any better? Just now, the public voted to continue the trial."Seeing the crowd's attitude take a complete 180, I immediately realized what had happened and let out a bitter smile.I had originally wanted to use my death to bury everything. After all, nothing could be changed anymore. All I asked was not to have my spirit flogged. Yet, since things had already come this far, with my most painful memories revealed, what else was there that couldn't be seen?Fine. Then let the truth be laid bare."I'm feeling much better," I said. "Let's continue then."On the big screen, Alvin, his body mangled, was tossed beside me.Austin walked to the door with his men, his laugh cold and bloodthirsty. "He's barely clinging to life. Who knows if he'll last for another second? Rose, make sure you watch your dearest informant take his last breath."The heavy door creaked shut.In the pitch-black room,

Water bottles, eggs, even stones were hurled at me, raining down in an endless storm.I stood there, face pale, making no attempt to dodge as the blows split my skin and left me drenched in blood. In the past, if I so much as got a scratch, Jonah would have carried me straight to the hospital in a panic. But now, he looked at my battered body without the slightest change of emotion."Continue the trial," he said indifferently. On the giant screen, several henchmen knelt trembling before Austin. "Mr. Hood, we don't know where all those cops came from, but they snatched away all the brats," one said. The wine glass in Austin's hand shattered on the floor, his veins bulging at his temple. "You're all useless! Get out of my sight!"They scrambled away in terror, while Austin yanked me out of the cage and threw me to the ground. My clothes were disheveled, my body etched with wounds from relentless torment. With bloodshot eyes, Austin slapped me hard across the face. I didn't str

I relapsed, but regrettably, the pain wasn't enough to kill me.I forced a mocking smile. "Jonah, surely you don't still have expectations of me. I wrote that letter for one reason only—to shame you. Keep watching if you want. The best you'll get is to hope for my quicker death. You might as well kill me now."Jonah's gaze filled with disappointment, his fists clenching tight. He said, "You're right about one thing—I should never have had expectations for someone like you. But you're wrong about another."If you're afraid of us seeing your memories, then all the more reason to see them through. The torment of the mind is no less than the suffering of the flesh. Your Honor, let's continue watching."The giant screen lit up again. In the memory, I was sitting on Austin's lap.I handed him the documents with a petulant whine, "Look, this batch of brats sent here is useless. They can't do anything and are close to costing this sector money. Why don't we sell them to the black market
