Masuk“Mommy?”
Macy felt relief wash over her at the sight of her son. She had been looking all over the hospital for him.
“Where did you run to?” Macy asked, pulling Will into a hug. The sight of his teary face made her heart clench. “Don’t ever run off again, do you hear?”
“Yes, mommy.” He whispered, hiccupping a little.
The nurse that had been helping her to look for him led the way back to the ward, helping him get settled back into his bed. Macy sat next to him, murmuring softly to him till he fell asleep.
The sight of his little face tugged at her heart strings. He looked so tired, so innocent.
She sighed.
Macy was still watching him when the nurse came to tell her someone was looking for her. It was the woman from earlier, the one who had hit Will with her car.
Her slender form was clothed in casual neutral toned clothes that screamed of money, her head held as she walked in like she owned the place. Her blond hair was up in a high ponytail, and her green eyes flashed with annoyance. The woman’s expression darkened into a scowl when she spotted Macy.
“Let’s get this over with, shall we?” The woman said curly, turning and walking away like she expected Macy to follow along.
Gritting her teeth, Macy followed the woman silently, forcing her anger down. As long as she would settle the medical bills, Macy was willing to let go of her anger.
Upon reaching the front desk, the woman demanded to see the bills. Macy waited in silence, her annoyance mounting as she watched the woman take her sweet time reading through the bills.
Finally, she looked up at Macy with one perfect brow arched high. “This has clearly been tampered with. I’m not paying for anything.”
Anger boiled in her stomach. “My son is injured because of you. You’re damn well going to pay for what you caused.”
“I saw his injury.” She scoffed. “It was minor at worst. Besides, the accident only happened because you didn’t watch your kid. You probably planned this because you’re desperate for money.”
“I did no such thing!” Macy hissed. “You lost control of your car and hit my son. You–”
“You’re trying to scam me. It would be within my legal rights to sue you for fraud.”
Macy breathed slowly, fighting the urge to hit the woman. She had to be calm. “All of the services on the examination report were rendered because of an accident you caused. The doctor and nurse who treated my son are all here and can testify that he did receive them. So either you pay the bills, or I’ll go to the police.”
The woman’s face turned dark with anger. Macy didn’t give a damn. The only reason why she hadn’t ripped her a new one was because of Will. She needed to remain level-headed for him.
A doctor appeared right at that moment, rushing forward to greet the woman with a smile. “Ms. Richards. Always a pleasure.”
“Likewise, Dr. West.” The smile on her lips seemed genuine enough, betrayed only by the slight tightening of their corners. “How is your wife? I haven’t seen her in a while?”
“She’s great.” The doctor replied, the smile still in place.
Watching them interact, Macy realized instantly that the woman was even more influential than she had thought. The realization worried her. What if the woman used her connections here to get out of making the payment? What would she do?
“What brings you here? You’re not due for a checkup yet.” Dr. West asked.
“There was a minor issue a few hours ago.” Ms. Richards began, sparing Macy a condescending look. “And this woman claims that I need to pay these bills for her son, despite the fact that she is the reason why there was an accident in the first place.”
Dr. West glanced at Macy, then back at Ms. Richards. “Could you explain a bit more?”
“She wasn’t watching her child, and he ran across the street before I could see him–” She began, but Macy interrupted her.
“You mean you ran him over.” Macy growled succinctly.
“–and now she claims that I have to pay the bills, even though the incident wasn’t my fault.” Ms. Richards finished, shooting Macy a arrogant look.
“May I?” Dr. West gestured to the chart and Ms. Richards handed it over to him.
“By all means, take a look. Was it tampered with in any way?”
Dr. West regarded the invoice for a moment before looking up. “No, it wasn’t. I know this because I was the one who attended to the boy.” He answered awkwardly.
“Does he really need to be hospitalized?” Ms. Richards said pointing at something on the invoice. “It’s unnecessary. All he did was fall, he’s not going to die.”
“What do you mean he fell, you fucking ran him over!” Macy yelled. “Dr. West, this is completely unethical. Will needs to be under surveillance tonight – you said so earlier yourself.”
There was an uncomfortable look on Dr. West’s face. He was about to speak before a beeping sound started. Appearing relieved, he took out a pager from his lab coat. “I have to be on my way, I’m needed. Ms. Richards, as usual, lovely to meet you. Ms. Sands, have a good day.”
Before anyone could speak, he was rushing away, his white lab coat billowing behind him.
Ms. Richards regarded Macy with a condescending look. “I’ll be taking my leave now. Don’t contact me again, or I’ll sue.”
“You’re not going anywhere till you pay for the bills.” Macy hissed, glaring daggers at the woman.
She smirked. “Watch me.”
The woman turned around, stopping suddenly when she saw a tall, good looking dark haired man walking past a few feet away while on the phone.
“Graeme!” Ms. Richards called, and the man looked in their direction.
Macy blinked, staring at the man. There was something hauntingly familiar about him, but for some reason she couldn’t place him. His gaze flickered over her for a moment before returning back to Ms. Richards.
“Annette.” He acknowledged, a frown riding his brows. “Why are you here?”
Ms. Richards – Annette – turned back to glare at Macy. “I’ll let my boyfriend deal with you.”
Before Macy could speak, Annette rushed over to Graeme, clutching at his arm. “I need you to help me deal with this pest. She keeps insisting that I ran her son over on purpose, when it was her fault for not watching her kid. I want to teach them a lesson.”
Graeme looked over at the front desk, his dark eyes looking resting on her for the fraction of a second. Macy began feeling self conscious, painful aware of the fact that she probably looked like crap at the moment. It was almost a relief when he looked away, down at the woman glaring daggers at Macy’s direction.
The next words he said almost made her pity Annette. Almost. “Let go of me.”
Macy took Will to her parents' house the next morning, her body heavy and uncomfortable from carrying the twins. Graeme helped her out of the car, his jaw tight with tension as they approached the front door of the Richards' home.Eleanor Richards opened the door before they could knock, her face bright with forced cheer. "Oh, sweetheart! Come in, come in. Let me help you."But as they stepped through the doorway into the living room, Macy stopped dead. They saw Annette sitting on the couch, casually watching TV with a smile on her face, as comfortable as if she owned the place.Macy began to panic, her chest tightening. She took a few steps back, nearly losing her balance. "What is she doing here?""Macy, sweetheart—" Her mother immediately supported her, grabbing her arm to steady her."You said she wouldn't be here." Macy's voice was hard, cutting. "You promised me she'd be gone."Eleanor looked absolutely miserable. "I know, I know what we said. But Annette cried at home and begge
Graeme hurriedly took Macy to the hospital for a check-up, his hands trembling slightly as he helped her into the car."It's going to be okay," Macy whispered, though her face was pale."Don't talk, just breathe," Graeme said, his voice tight with worry. The drive to his family's hospital felt endless, every red light an eternity as he glanced over at Macy. When they finally arrived, he practically carried her through the emergency room doors. "I need a doctor now! My wife is pregnant with twins and—""Mr. Kincaid!" The head nurse recognized him immediately and rushed over. "Let's get Miss Sands into a private exam room right away."The staff moved quickly, and efficiently. Within minutes, the hospital's best obstetrician was examining Macy while Graeme paced outside the room, his mind racing with worst-case scenarios. When he was finally allowed back in, the doctor's expression was grave."Mr. Kincaid, Ms. Sands," the doctor began, removing her stethoscope. "The fetuses are now very
Macy looked down at Annette’s sleeping form, a cocktail of emotions swirling inside her. The fright of Annette’s sudden reaction had her frame shaking slightly, whether solely from her maddened rage or from something else, she didn’t know. She startled when Graeme’s hands came to cup her cheeks. Staring up at him, she tried to shake off the unease she felt at the contract. It was difficult keeping her expression clear, but she did. He was silent, but she knew exactly what was going through his mind. “I’m really okay, Graeme.”He didn’t look too convinced, but he let it go. “Okay.” He echoed, dropping his hands to hold hers. “We should get going. We can’t talk to her while she’s in this state, and she needs to rest anyway.”Nodding, Macy let him steer her towards the door. She couldn’t help glancing back one last time as they departed. The image of Annette, pale and sedated on her hospital bed lingered in her mind throughout the drive home. Annette was a horrible person, and Macy d
Graeme kept his arm around her waist, drawing her closer to him. Macy relaxed against him without complaint, tired from waiting for over two hours. He could tell Annette’s condition was really bothering her, despite the fact that the woman in question had done several awful things to her. It was amazing. Commendable even. Graeme, however, didn’t share the same level of empathy his fiancée did. He knew Annette well enough to know that this entire thing was likely just another ploy of hers. To what end, he didn’t know yet. But he wo
Macy stirred on the soft wide bed, her eyes blinking open as she did. Sunlight streamed from an open window facing east, making her groan. She wanted to sleep longer… Reaching out with her eyes closed, she patted the space around her only for her search to come up empty. Graeme wasn’t in bed with her. Confused, she sat up and glanced around her.He wasn’t in the room either.Had he gone t
Macy held onto him tightly, unable to stop the tears that ran down her face. Every breath she took hurt, like she was relearning how to breathe again. It hurt to exist. She pressed her face harder against Graeme’s chest, her hands clenching into his shirt. His arms were strong around her, tight and sturdy. He kept whispering soft words to her, stroking her hair as she wept. His grounding presence around her made her feel better, and she couldn’t help but cling to him. “It’s alright baby.” Graeme whispered, still hugging her. &
