MEANDRA

My eyes widened, and my heart thudded violently against my ribs, each beat louder than the last. The air in the room seemed to grow heavier, thick with unspoken tension.

I tightened my grip on the doorknob and began to inch backwards with measured slowness. Every movement was deliberate, cautious — not just because I was afraid, but because I knew he was watching.

I didn’t dare look away from him. My gaze remained locked on his. I didn’t want to seem suspicious. But I also knew — painfully, helplessly — that no matter what I did, it would be taken the wrong way. Misinterpreted. Twisted.

His expression darkened, eyes narrowing into sharp, calculating slits. He took a step forward — then another — slow, measured steps that sent dread crawling up my spine.

The room felt smaller with every inch he closed between us.

MEANDRAMy eyes took in the interiors of the bedroom. It was beyond my expectations. Not that I was expecting anything luxurious. I was simply grateful to have a bed and a change of clothes to sleep in. My eyes lingered on the queen sized bed in the middle of the room. There was a vanity and a mirror at one corner, a table and a chair at the other corner. There was a double doored wardrobe adjacent to the bed. I didn't know my breath was caught in my throat until now. I closed my eyes and sighed. My heart was racing. It almost seems too good to be true. I was waiting to awaken from this dream. Somehow the universe would plunge me back into the darkness like it usually does and what was remaining of my hope would shatter. It was a feeling that was well familiar and I was used to it by now.I was used to it all except now, I wasn't waking up. I was stuck here. It seemed like it was too real to be true. The feeling of bittersweet nostalgia hit me. There was nothing that I could do to m

MEANDRAI couldn’t stop myself. It was as though the flickering awareness of my surroundings was blurred, and I was no longer in control of my body. Before I even knew what I was doing, my feet had begun to move. The space between us—once charged with uncertainty, and the silence of too many unsaid things—began to shrink with every step I took toward her.Shantai didn’t move. She stood still, unmoving and unflinching. My hands reached out before I could even think of why. They hovered at first, hesitant, trembling. Then they touched her. My arms slid across the curve of her back, one hand rising to cradle her shoulders while the other pressed gently against her spine. She was here.I pulled her body flush against mine. My cheek rested beside hers. I felt the rise and fall of her chest, the subtle tension in her muscles, the cautious way her breath caught between us. But still, she didn’t push me away. My lips curved. A smile bloomed across my face before I even realized it. I coul

MEANDRAIt could have been worse. I tried to reassure myself. It was not completely what I wanted but at the same time. It could have been worse.“Shantai,” before I could stop Belle from standing up too quickly, she hurried to the doorway where Shantai stood.Shantai had time to accommodate her in her arms before the both of them were knocked off balance, in a tangle of hands and legs. I held my breath. For a second, the whole room was shrouded in silence and then out of the blue, Belle began to laugh before Shantai joined in.There was no explanation for how it happened but the corners of my lips were beginning to tilt up into a smile. A much wider one that I didn't think that I was capable of. I closed my eyes and sighed. The confines of my chest felt very light.“What are you still doing there? Join us,” Belle stretched out her hand with a huge smile. Her eyes twinkled with amusement and delight. I wasn't so sure I could remember the last time I witnessed life in her eyes.I didn'

MEANDRAI could feel my heart pounding in my ears as I hurried down the hallway with Belle's frail hand in mine. I knew she was too weak to run but I couldn't, wouldn't take the risk of leaving her behind at the mercy of Jasquire. Not when I could feel the sound of her hasty steps hurrying behind me. I wasn't going to let Shantai be blamed for something that she had no knowledge of. Not when she mattered so much to Belle. Not when she had come to matter so much to me. If anything, I felt something shift within me. Calling it determination was a bit of a stretch but I could tell that it was a very strong emotion. One that I couldn't let go of.“Come back here this instant,” Jasquire's loud voice pierced through the silence of the hallway. But her command held no weight and thank goodness, that I still remember what freewill felt like because I was never going to do what she needed me to do.“Alejandro,” his name slipped from Belle's lips again. Louder this time. We could still hear Jas

  • The Tyrant’s Broken Princess   CHAPTER 51

MEANDRAAlejandro hadn’t been the same since Jasquire accused Shantai of drugging Belle.I saw it in the way his eyes dulled around her, the way his shoulders stiffened when she entered a room, even if she only came to collect something she’d forgotten. There was no fury, no loud accusations—just silence.A thick, impenetrable wall of silence that said more than rage ever could. He didn’t yell. He was simply silent and that was even more dangerous.Shantai had once been the only other person in Belle’s life who acted like family—not duty, not title. Just care. But now, Alejandro forbade her from even hrt Belle’s room. When Belle woke from fevered sleep, reaching for Shantai’s hand, it was mine she found instead. I had been the one to tuck the cool cloth beneath her brow. I was the one taking care of her.And Shantai had been sent to scrub linens in the laundry room.It wasn’t right.I watched her each time she passed Belle’s room on her way to and from the wash station. Her fingers wo

JASQUIREImmediately after stepping out of the room, my heart began racing and it became hard to hide my expression. The weight of what had just happened still pressed down on my chest. I walked quickly but not too quickly, careful not to draw attention to myself. My feet barely made a sound against the old wooden floor.“Father,” I called softly, my voice barely rising above a whisper. I glanced around, hoping no one had heard me. “Father...” I repeated, a little louder this time.I hesitated when I heard the sound—a faint shuffle. My breath caught mid-step. It came from behind me, close, too close. Every instinct screamed for me to turn around, to see who—or what—was there. But I didn’t.I forced myself to remain still, eyes fixed aheadTurning too quickly would only confirm suspicion. Whoever was behind me might already be watching, waiting for that one flinch, that one giveaway glance. So I stayed rigid, pretending not to notice.I shifted slightly, just enough to seem casual. My

MEANDRAHis loud, hasty footsteps echoed down the corridor, growing louder with every passing second. Relief swelled in my chest like a tide. I knew that sound better than I knew my own name.Alejandro.I bent over Belle. Her head lolled slightly, her breath shallow but wrong—too slow, too forced, like her body had to remember how to keep going.“Alejandro is coming,” I whispered, voice catching in my throat. I reached out, brushing back a stray lock of hair from her damp forehead, then gently tapped her cheek with the tips of my fingers. “Hey, stay with me, Belle. He’s almost here, alright? You’re going to be fine. I promise.”Her eyelids fluttered. She didn’t speak, butshe moved her head in a sluggish nod. A low, airy hum slipped through her lips—a soft, desperate sound that nearly shattered me. Her eyes weren’t completely shut. She was trying.Trying so hard not to give in. To stay awake. To stay alive. The door behind us banged open.Alejandro burst in, his chest heaving, his ey

MEANDRAI took in multiple breaths, finally being able to breathe properly. The hallway outside Alejandro’s room was silent, filled with only the thud of my footsteps as I rushed away. The air felt thinner here, less suffocating than the thick tension I’d just escaped. But I wasn’t steady yet.My mind still reeled from the sight of Jasquire, her calculated smile, the way Alejandro had shoved her hand away — the sound of it still echoed behind my ribs. I moved down the hallway with slow, measured steps, the worn floorboards creaking faintly beneath my feet.Would she come after me? My mind was still stuck on what had happened, wondering..Would Jasquire storm down that hallway, furious and entitled, simply because she had seen me with him? My mind circled around the image—her eyes narrowing, lips twisting in that too-sweet smile that never quite reached her gaze. I had seen that look before.I didn’t even realize I had stopped walking until I felt the cold bite of air on my skin. M
