Chapter 9

Author: Chronos
Inside the Maybach, Chris pressed his lips into a thin line. A trace of anger flickered in his dark, brooding eyes.

Joan noticed at once. "Chris, who is this 'Mr. Reeves' that man mentioned? Adriana hasn't seen much of the world. Don't let her get fooled by someone just because of a brooch."

"Don't talk nonsense. Adriana isn't that kind of person."

Chris turned his gaze toward the window. His shadowed brows were reflected faintly in the glass.

Outside, Adriana was speaking with that man, her eyes alight with a joy that came straight from the heart.

Even as he refuted Joan, tangled thoughts crowded his mind, stirring irritation and unease.

Adriana took a cab home, feeling as though the night had been nothing more than a dream.

She opened the photo album and found the picture of her mother with Neo. Only then did she realize it wasn't the only one—among four or five photos taken from her middle school years through college, Neo appeared in every single one.

Confusion rose in he

Adriana didn't get up. She simply let herself fall back, lying flat on the cold floor.Scenes from the past flickered before her eyes: Francesco teaching her fencing, carrying her up mountains, kneeling to propose… She remembered the engagement ring—something she had seen in a magazine during high school, a private collection she had casually remarked was beautiful. She had no idea how much effort he must have spent to buy it. She had betrayed a love so genuine…It was nearly eleven when Adriana finally left the fencing club alone, taking a taxi back to the hospital. On the ride, she opened the chat interface with Francesco. His avatar remained unchanged—the ocean she had set for him back in college. A deep, clear blue, just like his eyes.Adriana: [I'm sorry. How is your wound? Is it serious?]She typed the message, but hesitated before sending it.Francesco already had a wife. Was it appropriate for her, as his ex, to send such a message? Even though they had a formal client

Francesco was supremely confident, moving without a shred of protective gear.Adriana tightened her grip on her sword, testing him with two tentative thrusts—both easily dodged by Francesco. His reflexes were lightning-fast, and soon he returned a strike of his own. Adriana couldn't evade it in time; the tip of his sword struck her protective gear.Francesco's force was light, and the blade simply bounced off.He struck again, knocking her sword aside."Adriana, are you playing with me?""Sorry… it's been so long, I'm a bit rusty," she admitted, picking up her sword. She hadn't come here to compete—she was here to let him vent.Francesco let out a cold, mocking laugh. "At your last match, weren't you fearless? Or do you think I'm not even worthy of being your opponent?"Adriana blinked in surprise. "You watched the match?"He never wasted time on amateur exhibitions."I just happened to pass by… caught a glimpse. Didn't know you'd compete.""Give me your all, or go back to t

Francesco had actually recorded their conversation!Adriana's teeth itched with frustration. Truly, fate had a cruel sense of humor.Adriana: [What do you want from me?]The video he sent was clearly a threat.Francesco: [Come to the old place tonight for fencing, or this video will appear in your company's group chat.]Francesco: [Just in case you forgot, a friendly reminder: the old place is the Heatherton Fencing Club.]Of course, Adriana knew exactly where the old place was. She had learned her fencing skills there—personally taught by Francesco.Back in high school, her timid nature often made her a target. Afraid of troubling Grandma Rosie, she never told anyone. One day, when a few students cornered her in an alley, it was Francesco who came to her rescue.Disgusted by her weakness, he brought her to the fencing club and taught her how to fight back. She tried, only to end up beaten, her face bruised and swollen. When Chris found out, he was furious upon learning she ha

"I know you… you bad woman!"Her English was clumsy, clearly repeating something Francesco had said. Bad woman—an interesting choice of words.Adriana's fingers dug into the phone's casing, nearly breaking a nail in the process.Francesco got up and led the woman away. Once he returned, Adriana hesitated. Should she suggest ending the video call?"Would you like to continue later?" she asked. Her gaze flicked to the ring on his hand. That woman must be his wife. If his wife was hostile toward her, Adriana thought she should be cautious. This cooperation project didn't really require Francesco's personal oversight. But Francesco ignored her entirely. His tone was cold and firm. "Keep answering my question."Adriana straightened her posture and continued, "Regarding our company's forward-looking investment in this cooperation, the focus is on several key areas…"Halfway through, a familiar voice sounded in her ear."Who are you talking to?"The sudden voice startled Adriana so

Adriana felt a tightness in her chest. Chris was an impossibly proud man, and every time she heard his self-deprecating words, her sorrow mirrored his own.Her lips trembled as she murmured, a little dejectedly, "Chris… you know I never thought that way.""Then prove it to me."Chris's eyes darkened as he picked up his phone."Either you stay here, or we go together. I'll call Bella right now.""I'll stay."Adriana gave in, sending a message to Charlie to request leave. Once Chris recovered, he would be busy with work and have no time to fuss over her.A satisfied smile spread across Chris's face. He reached out to ruffle her hair."Everything I do is to protect you."Adriana knew he meant the situation with Neo. No matter how much she tried to explain, Chris would never believe that Neo's feelings for her were innocent. She despised that car accident five years ago, which had taken the cheerful, healthy Chris and left him in his current condition. She didn't argue; the prior

Joan had barely opened her mouth when Chris cut her off."The boy comes first."Joan pressed her lips together. "Call me if anything happens." She led Edward toward the door, but Chris called after them."Wait. I'll have Jimmy come carry him."Jimmy arrived quickly and entered the room to collect Edward. He scooped the boy into his arms, and Chris reminded him to avoid the elevator that had been used to transport the body yesterday."Chris, you're getting better and better at being a dad," Joan said with a bright smile. Her eyes flicked toward Adriana briefly before she held her head high and left.Chris's gaze lingered on Adriana as she cleaned up the dishes. She showed no reaction, as if Joan's words hadn't even reached her.Once the table was cleared, she lifted the thermal box."I'll head back too."Chris hadn't expected her to say that. His eyes darkened."Stay. Keep me company."Lately, Adriana had been acting strangely. Seeing her remain silent, he felt a prickling un
