Elena slid into the black attire she reserved for work, elegant enough to pass for dinner wear if anyone caught her in passing, but practical at the seams where she could move, hide, vanish.

Her hair was tied up in a style that could unravel into something unrecognizable in seconds. The duffel with carefully packed tools sat tucked beneath the bed, ready for the brief moment she would slip from the estate like a shadow.

She checked the mirror once, smoothed her lip, exhaled. Just one clean line, she reminded herself.

Her heels made no sound as she stepped into the hallway, dimly lit, the mansion hushed.

The servants knew better than to roam the wing she’d claimed. The main doors weren’t far, if she could just reach them, she would be gone before Roman realized.

“Elena.”

His voice, deep and iron, froze her at the threshold.

She turned slowly. Roman stood there in a black tailored suit, shirt unbuttoned just enough to look sinfully effortless.

The crowd murmured louder, whispers thick with scandal. Roman Thorne, so out of control? With Dante Valerio as his rival?Roman’s jaw flexed, his chest rising with barely checked fury. He pulled Elena tighter into his side, his hand gripping her waist possessively as though to brand her in front of the world.“You lay a hand on her again,” Roman said, voice cutting cold, “and I’ll break it.”Dante’s laughter rang like crystal shattering. “Break it?” He tilted his head, studying Elena with deliberate insolence before flicking his gaze back to Roman. “You can’t even keep her from slipping through your fingers. Tell me, Roman, what’s more embarrassing? That your fiancée runs from your arms… or that she lets herself be caught by mine?”The room sucked in a collective breath.Elena stiffened, her pulse hammering, though her lips curved in that familiar, dangerous smirk. She wanted to retort, to play her game, but Roman’s grip was vice tight, his fury was not something to toy with right

Elena had timed it perfectly. The waltz was reaching its peak, chandeliers blazing down on her as she moved in Roman’s arms like a spoiled heiress basking in love. The crowd drank it in, Roman Thorne undone, Elena Sinclair victorious. But beneath the glittering performance, Elena’s eyes were fixed on her mark. He was drifting toward the far side of the ballroom, where the lights dimmed near the balcony doors. His guards were distracted by the dance floor spectacle. It was her opening.Roman spun her, his grip almost punishing. For the briefest moment, her body left his orbit, exactly the sliver of space she needed. She slipped.A single step, light as a shadow, angled not back into Roman’s arms but toward the edge of the floor. Her gown swirled in perfect cover, her smile never faltering. To anyone watching, it looked like a flirtatious flourish. To Elena, it was freedom, just a few strides and she’d vanish into the sea of glittering gowns and waiters. But before her foot could e

The ballroom was alive with murmurs, champagne glasses clinking nervously as more and more of society’s elite circled near Roman and Elena’s table, hungry to witness what everyone was now calling the scandal of the year.Roman had expected to endure handshakes, shallow congratulations, and thinly veiled questions about the marriage contract. Instead, what he got was Elena, acting the part of a woman hopelessly, recklessly in love. She leaned into him as if she belonged there, laughter bright and shameless, her hand brushing his tie as though straightening it. Every time someone congratulated Roman, Elena was quicker with her response.“Oh, I caught him at the perfect time,” she told one woman with a dazzling smile. “Roman was practically begging me to say yes.”Roman’s jaw locked, but Elena continued, sliding her hand down his sleeve, nails grazing the fabric. “He’s not as scary as everyone thinks. Isn’t that right, darling?”“Enough,” he muttered, his lips barely moving. Her smirk o

The town car rolled to a stop in front of the Grand Orion Hotel, its façade glittering with chandeliers and camera flashes. Reporters had already gathered, tipped off about Roman Thorne’s presence. But no one expected this. The driver stepped out and opened the door. Roman emerged first, tall, immaculate in his tailored black suit. The crowd surged forward, microphones flashing, voices overlapping, questions about his empire, about the gala, about rumors of his personal life. Roman ignored them, as always, his expression a mask of cold indifference. Then Elena stepped out.For a second, silence fell. The silk gown caught every stray light, clinging and flowing at once, the slit daring, the back scandalous. But it wasn’t just the dress, it was the way she held herself, chin tilted, lips curved in that knowing smile, like she owned the very ground beneath her stilettos. The crowd erupted.“Elena Sinclair?”“Roman Thorne’s fiancée, so it’s true?”“They’re really getting married?”Came

The click of her heels against marble announced her before the door even opened. Roman had been standing in the corridor, hands in his pockets, the picture of composed patience. Yet the moment Elena stepped out, the air shifted. The gown clung to her like it had been made for no one else, silk cascading down her frame, dipping at her back, hugging her waist before flowing free. Midnight shimmer caught the dim lights overhead, making her look like a star had dropped into his mansion.Elena, of course, acted as though none of it mattered. Her shoulders rolled back, her chin lifted, her smirk unapologetically smug. “So,” she drawled, turning slowly as if on a runway. “Do I meet your impossible standards, Mr. Thorne?”Roman’s throat tightened. He had chosen that dress for power, for image, for the headlines that would swarm after the gala. But he hadn’t expected this. He hadn’t expected her.His gaze swept down once, lingering too long at the curve of her collarbone, the line of her leg
