Dante leaned back in his chair, letting the perfumed air of his suite fill his lungs.

He thought of Roman’s face when he finally let the world convince him Elena had lied.

He pictured that certainty cracking into a thousand jagged pieces.

He imagined Roman’s hands, those hands that had held power for years, now used to tear at the seams of his life.

He imagined Elena’s face, the moment she would realize the flood had reached the house.

There was hunger in that image. Not the petty hunger of a jealous lover, but the predator’s glee at watching a kingdom burn.

He picked up his glass and drank, slow. “You wanted a war, Elena?” he murmured into the dark, tasting the finality in the word. “Fine. I’ll give you one.”

He tapped a final message into his secure line to an intermediary with access to a tabloid.

A single line, cold and precise: “File for Wednesday. Elena Sinclair, secret identity under lock. Pay for exclusivity. Make it brutal.”

Then he sat back and let the plans unfurl in h

Jace sat on the edge of the guest room bed at the estate, phone cradled in both hands like it might bite him.Marcus’s message glowed softly on the screen.Just got home. Did you end up meeting Elena like you said? Or are you still out?It was so… normal. So Marcus. The same easy tone. The same casual concern. The same man who’d brought him flowers, listened to him talk too much, apologized when he thought he’d hurt him. The same man who had held him without rushing, without taking. How could that person be dangerous?Jace’s thumb hovered over the keyboard, unmoving.Around him, the house felt different now. Not hostile. Just alert. Like a held breath stretched too long.Hale had stationed security outside the room. Elena had checked on him twice already, her voice gentle but her eyes sharp, scanning him like she was memorizing his face.We just need you to stay put tonight, she’d said. No texts. No calls. Just… trust me.Trust me.That was the problem. He trusted Marcus too.Jace lea

Marcus dragged a hand down his face. “Jace got a message from Elena tonight. Late. Told him to wait.”Evan’s brows knit. “That doesn’t fit.”“No,” Marcus agreed. “It doesn’t.”He stared at the phone like it might confess something if he looked hard enough. If Elena was dead, Jace wouldn’t be hearing from her.If Elena was alive, then someone had just paid for the wrong body. And if someone had paid...Marcus’s blood ran cold.“She’s not dead,” he said suddenly.Evan frowned. “Marcus...”“She’s not,” Marcus repeated, more force this time. “If there’s one person who could fake a death under pressure, it’s Elena.”Evan’s expression darkened. “You think she let it happen.”“I think she survived it,” Marcus said. “And if she did… then she knows.”“Knows what?”Marcus looked up slowly, eyes sharpening.“That she’s being hunted. That the bounty moved. And that someone close to her is compromised.”Evan went still. “You.”Marcus didn’t deny it.Silence stretched between them, thick and electr

Jace was still standing there, shifting his weight from foot to foot, when a familiar black SUV eased to the curb. The window rolled down.“Hale?” Jace blinked. “Uh… hey?”Hale didn’t smile. He never did when things were normal, but this was different. His expression was closed, professional in a way that made Jace’s stomach tighten.“Get in,” Hale said calmly. “Elena sent me.”Jace frowned as he opened the door and slid into the back seat. “She said she’d come herself. What’s going on?”Hale pulled back into traffic smoothly, eyes fixed on the road. “She’ll explain when you get there.”“That’s not an answer,” Jace said, trying to keep it light but failing. “Did I do something?”“No,” Hale replied immediately. That was somehow worse.Jace leaned back, arms crossing over his chest as the city blurred past the windows. He watched Hale’s reflection in the rearview mirror, searching for something. Anything.“Is Roman okay?” Jace asked.Hale’s jaw tightened a fraction. “Everyone’s alive.”

Far away from all of them, in the Thorne estate that now buzzed with controlled chaos, Elena stood in her setup room once more, blood scrubbed from her hands, hair pulled back tight, eyes cold and luminous in the glow of a dozen screens. She watched the transfer happen in real time.Wallet to wallet.Confirmation code.Timestamp.Payment executed.A slow, dangerous smile curved her lips.“They bought it,” she murmured.Hale stood behind her, grim. “Mrs. Harrow’s account?”“Yes,” Elena replied. “And Vauxhaul’s shell right behind it.”Roman appeared in the doorway, arm bandaged, face still carved with fury and relief and something darker. “They think you’re dead.”Elena turned to him.“No,” she said calmly. “They need me to be dead.”She faced the screens again, fingers hovering over the keyboard, already rewriting the board.“Let them mourn,” she continued. “Let them relax. Let them make mistakes.”Roman’s jaw clenched. “And Marcus?”Elena’s eyes sharpened.“He’ll feel it soon, if it w

  • The Ultimatum Wife   Chapter 191

Elena flew up the stairs. Two at a time. Three. She turned the corner into the master hallway and smelled it immediately.Blood.Her vision narrowed. The bedroom door was wide open. She crossed the threshold just as Roman pulled someone into his arms, clutching the body to his chest like it might fall apart if he let go.His shirt was soaked through, hands shaking, breath ragged.“Elena...” he gasped when he saw her, voice breaking. “Elena.. thank God...”Her eyes dropped. To the bed.To the silk dress she recognized instantly. To the body lying where she should have been.Lysandra Vauxhaul stared lifelessly at the ceiling, eyes wide and empty, face destroyed beyond recognition, blood pooled dark and obscene against the sheets Elena had slept in the night before. The world stopped.Elena didn’t scream. She didn’t gasp. She simply… went very still.Roman crushed her into him then, arms iron tight, like he needed to feel her breathing to believe it. His entire body trembled.“They shot

  • The Ultimatum Wife   Chapter 190

The door opened without a sound. Not a creak. Not a click.Just the quiet surrender of a lock that had already been defeated. The first man slipped inside, gun raised, movements precise and unhurried. The bedroom lights were low, shadows pooling thick in the corners. The bed dominated the space, a figure beneath the covers, still and unsuspecting.Target acquired. He lifted two fingers and gestured once. The second man entered, already scanning. His gaze flicked to the bed, then to the bathroom door, then to the open walk in closet.Movement.The faint rustle of fabric. The first man adjusted course instantly.“Not the target,” he murmured, voice barely air.Roman Thorne stood inside the closet, pulling on a shirt, back half turned, mind still on the woman he believed was waiting for him in bed.He sensed it a split second too late. The shift in the air. The pressure. The instinct that screamed danger. He turned... and saw black.A figure lunged out of the shadows.Roman reacted on re
