Chapter 4

Author: Tiptik
Derrick moved into the small apartment he used for handling urgent pack matters.

It was likely my sudden decision to hold a marking ceremony had made him feel suffocated, and he went there to get some peace and quiet.

That was fine. At least we could both have a breather.

I quietly packed my luggage.

I listed the house we were living in on a real estate website.

During the afternoon I handed the keys over to the agent, I stayed behind to sort through some loose items and found a project file tucked inside a magazine.

A quick glance told me it was something Derrick had been working on recently.

After hesitating briefly, I decided to deliver it to him.

When I arrived, the apartment door was tightly shut.

Faint laughter and conversation drifted from inside. Derrick was not alone.

I raised my hand to knock.

Suddenly, I heard a familiar voice from within. She sounded a little distressed.

“Alpha, this is all my fault. It was my first time attending a marking ceremony, I didn’t know any better. Now pack members are saying I’m your mistress. Several colleagues even asked me privately if there’s something going on between us.

“You’ll have to help clarify things for me in the pack. Otherwise, I won’t even have the face to show myself anymore.”

My raised hand froze midair.

Before Derrick could respond, his Beta cut in with a teasing laugh.

“Come on now. Do you really want him to clear things up, or are you just hoping he would say something else?”

A wave of suggestive laughter followed.

Lianna responded with a coy 'oh, stop it,' but there wasn’t a trace of real annoyance in her voice.

“Alright, that’s enough. Stop teasing her.”

Derrick’s voice carried a casual indulgence. “Lianna, you don’t need to take these kinds of things to heart. Give it some time. They will forget.”

'Give it some time, and they will forget.'

Those words suddenly triggered a memory.

Back then, I had gone to help him with some pack affairs.

He had absentmindedly draped an arm over my shoulder, only to be seen by an Omega passing by.

That very afternoon, he made a casual clarification within the pack. He told everyone not to misunderstand and to focus on their work.

At the time, I understood why he did it. To avoid unnecessary gossip, I stopped going to see him altogether.

My fingertips turned cold. What he had minded was never the idea of an office relationship itself.

It was the shewolf he was being seen with. That was me.

I was a shewolf who could offer him nothing in his career.

Another werewolf asked curiously, “By the way, Alpha, what did you end up doing about Celine? I actually received her marking ceremony invitation this morning. That was sudden!”

After a brief silence, Derrick chuckled. It was completely devoid of warmth. “Let her do as she pleases.

“I’ve always indulged her for the small things, but this time, she needs to understand that some things aren’t solved by throwing a tantrum.”

“Oh?” someone jeered. “So you’ve already decided not to show up?”

Derrick said nothing. That was silent acknowledgement.

Another werewolf hesitated before speaking. His tone was cautious.

“Alpha, do you really want to make things this tense? You and Celine have been together for so many years. We’ve all been waiting for your marking ceremony. We're all extremely eager–"

He paused before making a half-joking speculation.

“You’ve been avoiding a marking ceremony all this time. Don’t tell me you’ve got other plans? Could it be because of Lianna? If she were the one, you’d have marked her long ago, wouldn’t you?”

“Jack!” Lianna cut him off with a chuckle, “Please don’t make jokes like that about me. Alpha knows what he’s doing.”

The last few words were soft, yet they carried a deep meaning.

Derrick didn’t bother explaining.

There were chuckles from the room.

Another werewolf chimed in. “If you ask me, Alpha’s already been more than devoted. Anyone else would’ve lost patience by now.

“Besides causing trouble, what else can Celine do for you? She doesn’t even take part in pack governance. She's unlike Lianna, who's smart, sensible, and actually useful when it matters.”

“Stop talking nonsense!” Lianna interrupted with mock reproach.

Outside the door, the motion-sensor light had gone out at some point.

The hallway fell into darkness.

I gently placed the envelope on the floor by the door. I nudged it toward the door with my toes.

I then turned around and walked away.

Their first real encounter happened at a cafe on the corner. She was sitting by the window with a female friend.Derrick practically ran inside."Celine."She looked up when she heard her voice. When she saw him, the smile on her face faded a little."Derrick. What a coincidence."Her friend looked at him warily."Can we talk alone? Just five minutes." His voice was hoarse.Celine hesitated. She then nodded at her friend. Her friend got up and moved to a nearby table."You look well," he blurted out."Thank you. What did you want to talk about, Derrick?""I-I bought our house back. It's exactly how it used to be."He spoke quickly. "And I fired Lianna. There was never anything between us. I swear to the Moon Goddess, she's not my mate. I never liked her! I never noticed all those little things she did. I was dumb–"His words came out desperate. It was as if saying those things could wipe the slate clean after eight long years.Celine listened quietly. Winona gave him one last look. There was nothing left in her eyes but contempt. "Derrick, you deserve this. What you lost was the shewolf who loved you most in this world. From today on, she's a Luna."But not your Luna."You'd better not make a scene. The warriors here aren't just for show!"With that, she turned around and jogged back to the ceremony. Her cheerful smile returned as if nothing had happened.Derrick stood there stiffly. At the end of the red carpet, Tony carefully lifted Celine's veil.He leaned forward, and his fangs pierced the side of Celine's neck to complete the marking ceremony.Derrick lost control. He shifted into his wolf form and lunged forward. This time, it was his own Beta and several werewolves who held him back with all their strength."Alpha! Calm down!""Alpha, don't do this!"They practically pinned him in place using all their might."Let go of me!" Derrick's eyes were red as he struggled violently. He stared ahead while the marking cer

'Alpha Tony Alden?'Derrick's extended leg froze mid-motion. He was stunned. It felt like all the blood in his body had surged to his head. The world in front of him warped and swayed.Only the two figures at the center of the red carpet, arm in arm, looked painfully clear."Wait. What is the meaning of this?" A werewolf beside him nearly dropped his glass."Isn't he the Alpha? W-What's going on here?""Alpha Tony? So Luna Celine is having her marking ceremony with Alpha Tony? What–"The werewolves' shocked murmurs buzzed like a swarm of disoriented bees, but they couldn't break through the piercing silence ringing in Derrick's ears.He stared at Celine, her face, and her dazzling smile. He stared at her hand that was wrapped tightly around another werewolf's arm.'No. This isn't right. This isn't right at all!'He suddenly shoved aside the stunned werewolves in front of him and ran toward the center of the red carpet."Alpha Derrick!"A figure quickly blocked his way.It

Derrick froze for a moment. He hadn't received any invitation at all.Celine had never sent him one.He frowned. His voice subconsciously turned authoritative. "I'm Derrick. I'm Celine's Alpha."The werewolf's smile faded. He looked at Derrrick in confusion before flipping through the guest list in his hands. "Are you the Alpha?" He asked carefully."Who else would I be?" Derrick's patience was rapidly wearing thin.Guests were already arriving one after another. Since the marking ceremony had been arranged so hastily, none of his own friends or relatives had been invited. That was the reason he had been in a sour mood. But now that he was here, he wasn't planning to make a scene over it.There were curious glances from all around."Oh, sorry, sorry!" The werewolf seemed to have confirmed something and quickly stepped aside. "Alpha, Luna hasn't arrived yet. You can head into the Sacred Forest to wait. Would you like me to guide you?"Derrick waved him off and walked straight

Derrick abruptly turned off his phone screen.Any rationality he had left was clinging to a final thread of hope.He drove out to meet up with the pack members, who were just as confused as he was.One of them rummaged through the car for a long while before finally pulling out a slightly crumpled invitation card from a pile of clutter. While handing it over, he avoided Derrick's gaze and said,"Uhm, Alpha, Celine had someone leave this in my car. Since you said you weren't going, I just tossed it aside."Derrick snatched it away immediately. He immediately saw the three words.[Alpha and Luna.]His heart clenched before suddenly loosening. He was the Alpha.Celine secretly tried on a dress, sold the house, and switched off her phone.None of this matched the sensible shewolf he knew.Winona must have been stirring things up behind the scenes again. She was trying to force him into reacting through something this extreme. But no matter what, the names on the invitation coul

The night sky grew dark, and silver rays of moonlight shone from above.Deep within the ancient Sacred Forest, a circular altar made of obsidian silently soaked in the moonlight.A one-eyed elderly Priest scattered silver powder across the ground to purify the space and banish all evil.Winona's post had a caption.[Dear Celine, I wish you happiness! I can't wait for the Alpha to arrive!]The group chat instantly flooded with messages.[Holy cow! It's actually all set up!][This is getting serious. Alpha, if you don't go, I seriously can't bear to watch it!][Derrick! You're our Alpha. Get moving already! Don't let this blow up in your face!"[Alpha, hurry up and go!
