Maya's POV

Lucas looked tired, and his expression was guarded, in a way that was so different from the very playful man I used to know. It made me sad.

"Thank you for coming, Lucas," I said carefully.

"You said you missed me," he said, not quite meeting my eyes. "I couldn't exactly say no to that, you know."

"Well, I'm glad you came."

The first several minutes were kind of awkward. We used small talk to fill the awkwardness, but I could tell that something was weighing on Lucas's mind.

Brooke's POVI soon arrived at the studio and sat down gingerly at my desk.My ribs were aching with a vengeance, but did that evil bitch, Maya, care? Of course, she didn't.Granted, she thought I was down with the flu, but I knew for sure that even if she knew I had taken a beating, she wouldn't care that I needed to recover first.Sighing at the unfairness of it all, I adjusted my sunglasses and picked up my phone to check my messages in case that Tanya bitch was up to some new mischief. The door to the office opened at that moment. Maya came out holding a tablet. She looked at me, took in my sunglasses, the scarf I was wearing, and the long sleeves. Then she looked at my bruised chin, which, unfortunately, I was unable to hide.I waited for her to show surprise like everyone else who had seen me that morning… maybe gasp, or at least her eyes would widen. She didn't do anything of the sort.“You're back,” she said instead. “I'm glad you're feeling better.”“Thanks.”“Carter mentione

Chapter 92: Full CoverageBrooke's POVMy ringing phone woke me up from a deep slumber. Groaning, I checked the caller and saw that it was my mom.“Hello,” I croaked into the phone.“What?! Honey, don't tell me you're still sleeping!”“What is it?” I asked, instantly becoming more alert, but I couldn't hide the resentment in my voice.I still hadn't forgiven her for ignoring my calls when I needed her and cutting my allowance.“Aren't you going to work today?”“Why are you asking?”“Well, I heard you haven't gone to work in the past several days.”I scowled. People couldn't close their fucking pieholes for shit. Who was the bastard spreading my business all around town?“Brooke, honey. Now isn't the time to be lazy. You have to prove your worth to Carter so that…”“That's easy for you to say. You're not the one who has to swallow your pride and have Maya freaking Thompson give you orders.”“I know, I know, honey, but it won't be for long, trust me. Can you believe that our stocks are

  • The Undesired Wife and Her Hidden Heir   Chapter 91: The Attendant

Carter's POVI hadn't planned to come back to The Hill Top Imperial Hotel. In fact, for the past five plus years, I had actively avoided the street it stood on.Yet I couldn'tget those words that Ashley had said that night I confronted her drunk out of my head. ‘You had seen what someone wanted you to see.’ So here I was at ten the next morning, sitting in the hotel lobby with a cup of coffee I wasn't drinking. The last time I was here was on that horrible night. I wasn't here to find out if Maya was lying or not.I was here to find out if my suspicions were correct about who had set the whole thing up.I didn't even know how to start asking my questions. It had been five whole years, after all. They would think I was crazy.Abandoning my tepid coffee, I got up and made my way to the front desk. This shouldn't be too difficult. I was one of the stakeholders of the hotel after all.I approached a friendly looking woman who was already smiling at me before I even got to the desk."Mr

  • The Undesired Wife and Her Hidden Heir   Chapter 90: A Friend of Brooke's

Maya's POV“Is everything okay, ma’am?” Austin asked me.I shook myself out of my stupor. “Yes, it has just been a long morning,” I replied.I picked up the wax pendant I had been working on, but my mind was still in turmoil.I was wrong about him. He wasn't protecting the Millers.Instead, he had been actively working behind the scenes to get them behind bars. What was his sudden interest in helping me about? And what did he want in return?I had no answer to either question.Sitting down at the jeweler's bench, I picked up the wax pendant I had been working on.For several minutes, I lost myself in the work. God, I loved my job so much.Doing it gave me such immense peace. The desk phone soon rang, interrupting the solitude.‘Ms. Thompson?" It was the receptionist downstairs. "I'm sorry to bother you. There's a woman here asking for Ms. Miller. She says she's a friend and is very insistent on seeing Ms. Miller today. Since Ms. Miller reports to you now, I thought to ask you whether

  • The Undesired Wife and Her Hidden Heir   Chapter 89: What the Money Bought

Carter's POVMaya didn't say anything for a long time.I had faced angry board members, hostile investors, and even my own father on his worst days. None of them had ever made my palms sweat or made me as nervous as the woman sitting across from me, pale and silent."Say something, please," I said at last. Her breath was coming in short rasps, and then she asked the last question I expected.“Did you… did you have Whitfield killed?” she whispered, staring at me with wide, slightly terrified eyes.“What?! No, of course not! Maya, how can you even ask me something like that?”She heaved a sigh of relief. “Well, he did die soon after he gave Mom the documents, so I just wondered.”“I had nothing to do with his death. My ways of doing things may not always be considered purely legal, but murder is way too extreme for even me.”She nodded, took a deep breath, and spoke. “So tell me how you managed it. Start at the beginning.""After the gala, you asked me to find out who Whitfield was and

  • The Undesired Wife and Her Hidden Heir   Chapter 88: The Empty Desk

Maya's POVBrooke's desk was empty again, as it had been for the past two days. Her chair was pushed in, showing that she hadn't come in at all.She hadn't even held the job for a week, yet she was already slacking big time. It was no less than I had expected from her.“Where’s Brooke?” I asked Austin.“She called in sick again. It’s the third day in a row that she's done that. Apparently, she has a stomach bug,” he replied, his tone showing that he didn't believe that one bit.Neither did I, but I nodded grimly, accepting the cup of coffee he handed me.In the few days since Brooke had worked here, she had been very fidgety. I thought back to her first day, when she received a message that clearly rattled the hell out of her. She had claimed that she had a family emergency and left, but by the time I reached the parking lot, she was gone.At first, I had waited with bated breath for news that her parents had been arrested. That had to be the so-called family emergency that she was
