[Arissa’s POV]
I felt butterflies dancing around in my stomach, and my heart threatened to jump out of my chest as I stared into Ivan’s blazing blue eyes. This was it... There was no going back after this. As of today, I would be Ivan's luna and finally take my place proudly by his side.
For a year, Ivan and I worked to restore the peace and to rebuild the Fulgur and Tonitrue packs after Theodore and Gillian attempted to overturn and conquer them. Now, since things were settled, it was time for me to take my place beside Ivan as the Fulgur pack’s luna.
Even though I had convinced myself that this was no big deal, I couldn’t stop the nerves that were now rushing through me. Dammit, why did becoming luna have to be such a big deal?
"Are you getting cold feet?" Ivan asked, squeezing my hands that were clasped tightly in his. "Planning to run?"
"Who is planning to run?" I snapped defiantly. "Elder Oliver, could you get on with it already, please?"
"R-right." The elder stammered, shooting a quick look towards Elder Gregory, who was already beginning to heal. "Welcome everyone!" He continued, snapping his gaze towards the crowd, which had finally grown quiet. "I thank each and every one of you for coming to join us on this joyous occasion where our King of Alpha’s names his luna!"
"Speed it up, old man." Ivan murmured, causing a giggle to escape me. "No need to draw it out."
"Would you rather do this?" Elder Oliver asked, growing annoyed.
"Sure," I said, smirking. "I’ll do it."
"Let him do it, my love." Ivan whispered, stopping me from taking control.
For a moment, Elder Oliver didn’t speak as he waited to see if I would interrupt again. Only when he was sure that I wouldn’t interrupt again did he continue.
"It is under the full moon, the goddess’ highest self, that we witness these two swear loyalty to each other."
Growing quiet, Elder Oliver lifted a small dagger and rope that sat on a table beside us. Using the rope, he began to bind our left hands together. After he was finished, he stepped back and held out the dagger.
"Arissa Armondi, Alpha of the Tonitru pack, do you swear loyalty not just from yourself, but from your entire pack to Ivan Fredrickson?"
"I guess." I giggled, sticking out my tongue as Ivan’s gaze narrowed. "Of course I do."
"And Ivan Fredrickson, do you swear to uphold your duties of protecting and cherishing Arissa Armondi and her pack for the rest of your life?"
"I promise both to Arissa, but only my protection to Arissa and her pack."
"Aw, that’s so sweet, Ivy." I smirked.
Letting out a huff of frustration over mine and Ivan’s inability to be serious, Elder Oliver lifted the dagger he held.
"Now, we shall witness Ivan and Arissa as they complete their blood oath to one another."
Holding out my free hand, I waited as Elder Oliver drew the dagger’s blade along my skin, sending a sear of pain up my arm as blood began to bead up on my skin. Once he was finished, he did the same to Ivan and then stepped back.
"Ivan Fredrickson and Arissa Armondi, please clasp your hands so that your blood may flow into each other, completing the bond between you both."
Nodding, I waited as Ivan reached out and wrapped his large, warm hand around mine, allowing our cuts to touch and our blood to join as one.
"It is with great pleasure." Elder Oliver began as Ivan and I continued to stare into each other’s eyes. "I present to you your alpha and luna of the Fulgur and Tonitru pack."
All around us, applause began to build, along with cheers, over all that were present. However, all that faded as I spotted a flash of blonde hair just beyond the stage Ivan and I currently stood on.
"What is it?" Ivan murmured, as I craned my neck in an attempt to find whoever that blonde hair belonged to. Something about it seemed so familiar, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it.
"I think I saw something." I responded, starting to move despite the fact that I was still bound to Ivan. "Just over..."
Moving quickly, I began to descend the stage and make my way through the crowd.
"Arissa, what is it?" Ivan hissed, as I started shoving people who were attempting to congratulate me out of the way.
"Just back here." I murmured, finally finding a break in the crowd.
Bursting through, I let my gaze scan the area until I found her, standing at the edge of the forest with her back turned towards me.
"There," I announced, pointing towards her so that Ivan could see. "She"
"Who?" Ivan asked, seeming confused. "I don’t see anyone."
"What?" Was he fucking with me? How could he not see her? "You’re joking, right?"
Unable to believe what I had just heard, I began to move forward until I was standing directly behind her.
"She is right here!" I snapped, reaching out with my now healed hand and touching her shoulder. "See, look at…"
Tugging, I made the girl turn around and felt my words get caught in my throat.
"Wha…" I gasped, my eyes growing wide.
Instead of staring at a child that seemed familiar, I found myself staring into black pools of emptiness that seemed to have flickers of flames in them. Around those pools was sunken skin that held the grayish hue of the dead. And around that face was blonde hair, the exact same color as mine, which was falling in in clumps as she stood there with her lower jaw hanging slack, revealing rotten teeth.
She was the picture of the undead, but that wasn’t the thing that left me speechless and in disbelief. What got me was the fact that the creature I was currently standing face-to-face with was me.
Stumbling backwards, I tried to make sense of what was going on. What was she and why did she have my face from when I was a child? Was this some type of sick joke or was this some type of warning?
"Arissa?" Ivan’s strong and comforting voice boomed as his free arm wrapped around me. "What’s wrong?"
By this point, we had an audience taking in what was happening, but from the confusion that laced their features instead of fear, I knew that they weren’t seeing what I was.
"Ivan, do you see her?" I asked quietly, trying to keep my voice from shaking. I was beginning to feel manic, and I didn’t want that side of me to show. "You do, right?"
Fixing my pleading gaze on Ivan’s confused one, I found my hope dropping as I began to realize that he couldn’t.
"What is it, my love?" He asked, tightening his hold. "What has you so riled up?"
Opening my mouth, I prepared to respond, but stopped as the fear of being seen as crazy began to build.
"It’s me, but me as a child." I started as dizziness began to overcome me. "But she isn’t the version of me that I remember. Instead, it is an undead version of me. Do you really not see her?"
"No, I don’t." Ivan said gently. "Arissa, there is nothing there."
At his words, a small giggle erupted from my lips as my dizziness began to grow, causing the world around me to start to shift and sway.
"Great, I’m losing my mind." I murmured, before collapsing and tumbling into darkness.
[Ivan’s POV]"Arissa!" I hissed, quickly catching Arissa as her body went limp. "Hey, wake up!"I clutched her in my arms and gently patted her cheek in an attempt to rouse her, but she didn’t respond. Instead, her mouth tightened into a grimace of discomfort and her face contorted in pain."GET A HEALER!" I growled, beginning to make my way towards the pack house while all the ceremony guests watched in confusion. "DON’T JUST STAND THERE LIKE FOOLS!"At my words, the crowd came to life, making way for me to pass through and asking around if anyone was a healer. Rolling my eyes, I continued to move, making my way into the pack house and up the stairs towards mine and Arissa’s living quarters. Once I arrived, I beelined for our room, laying her down on the bed and sending a mindlink to Christine.Satisfied that she would arrive soon, I busied myself by pulling off Arissa’s shoes and loosening her corset."Master," Christine called when she arrived. "What happened here?""She started s
[Arissa’s POV]I sat on mine and Ivan’s bed, picking at my food. Despite the things in front of me being my favorites, none of them were appealing. Just the smell alone was making me nauseous. Despite that, I attempted a few bites and immediately regretted it when I felt the food I had just swallowed attempt to come back up."Excuse me!" I gasped, jumping up and running to the bathroom."Arissa?" Ivan called, seeming genuinely concerned. "Are you alright?""F-fine..." I managed between heaves. As I spoke, I felt a warm hand press against my back as another lifted my hair before it could get ruined. Where the hand touched sent soothing tingles that immediately made me feel better."This child isn’t even born yet and is already causing trouble." I grumbled, collapsing against Ivan’s legs, and looked up into his eyes. "I’m blaming this on you.""Me?" Ivan repeated, raising a brow. "How can you blame me when you...""La la la." I began, plugging my ears. "I can’t hear you!"Jumping up, I
[Ivan’s POV]"Who?"I eyed Arissa as she continued to stare into the mirror ahead of her. Despite her insisting that something was there, I just couldn’t see it. Was she playing some sort of trick? Or was she actually seeing something?"Kids," Arissa muttered, reaching out and touching the mirror’s surface. "All the kids I killed in the past."At her words, I felt my heart clench painfully as images of that boy that attempted to kill her in the past appeared. Though I had managed to see that much of her memories, I hadn’t had the heart to actually ask her about it."Maybe you’re just tired." I murmured, wrapping my arms around her waist and pulling her against me. "Why don’t you try getting some sleep.""Sleep." The word came out quietly, but she didn’t protest as I pulled her closer. "I still need to brush my teeth." She pointed out, finally seeming to snap out of her daze."Then let me help you."Even though I knew that she didn’t need my help, something about leaving her alone in t
[Arissa’s POV]"Where to start?" I could feel my heartbeat picking up as I let all the emotions of that time crash into me. Until this day, I hadn’t told a single soul about that time or what I went through. It was still hard to believe that I would be doing this now. "As you know, at the age of eight, I didn’t meet my wolf.""That’s right." Ivan confirmed, tightening his hold on me. "And because of that, you were sent away.""Right," I sighed. "I was sent to Tenerbris Island." I continued, trying to keep my voice calm. "It was a specially made island for omega’s. The whole purpose of the island was to see who was the best candidate for reproduction. There it is kill or be killed. "Now that the words were flowing, so were the memories. The bloody sand that remained stained, leaving memories of what happened. The horror in my opponents' eyes as they slowly bled to death while I watched."Arissa," Ivan murmured, placing a hand on my cheek. "Where did you go?"Snapping out of my daze, I
[Arissa’s POV]"Welcome." Ivan called, remaining oblivious to the confusion that was rushing through me. "We are so happy that you agreed to...""No need for niceties." The man announced, cutting Ivan off.Instantly, I could feel annoyance beginning to radiate from him as he bit back his urge to argue. Haha, it looked like I would have some entertainment soon."There is no reason to attempt to ass kiss, alpha."This time I was unable to withstand the laughter that erupted from me, earning myself looks from all around me."It seems they aren’t impressed with you, Ivy." I managed in between bouts of laughter. "Shall I try?""Do you think it will...""Oh!" The tinkling voice echoed around us, cutting Ivan off once again.Confusion flared through me as I tried to make sense of what was going on. Turning my attention to the duo that had been coming to greet us, I braced myself as the woman’s eyes lit up with lust and she rushed forward."You’re so tiny and cute!" The woman cooed, wrapping
[Arissa’s POV]"Repeat that." I snapped, starting to believe that this old man was full of shit. "Kill the caster? How the fuck am I supposed to find them?"This was becoming more and more ridiculous. I had been cursed... cursed...As if the last fourteen years of my life weren’t a fucking curse. But not only was I cursed, I was also expected to know who exactly cursed me. How in the hell was I supposed to do that? I had crossed paths with so many insane people that it could be anyone!"Arissa, mind your manners." Ivan whispered, pulling me closer to him. "He is only...""Trying to help?" I finished for him, narrowing my gaze. "What would be helpful is..."I didn’t get to finish my sentence as a sudden wave of nausea hit me, causing my mouth to water and the taste of bile to dance on my tongue. Turning, I managed to make it to a rose bush before the contents of my stomach came back up. Dammit, this was really getting frustrating. If I wasn’t seeing dead children, I was throwing my bra
[Ivan’s POV]I watched as Arissa slipped off the formal attire she had been wearing for meeting the nomads and began to rummage through the closet for something more comfortable. Fuck the woman was enticing and the urge to attack her began to shadow any other thoughts."Don’t think about it, Ivy." Arissa giggled, pulling out a simple black dress and holding it against her chest. "Do you think this is acceptable for a banquet?"Standing up, I approached Arissa and yanked the far too short dress from her grasp. I didn’t know what she was playing at, but I wasn’t about to let any man see her in something so damn revealing."I think," I began, reaching around her and rummaging. "This is a better choice."Giving a tug, I pulled out a blue number with long sleeves and a floor-length skirt. Though the bust line was a little too low for my liking, it was much better than the one she was trying to wear."That grandma dress?" Arissa puffed, eyeing the garment in my hand. "I don’t understand why
[Arissa’s POV]The next day, I stood in front of the old holding cells where my mother had been banished after being brought back to Ivan’s pack. For a year, she had remained in this place, alone and away from the world. Not once had I bothered to come visit her, but despite my insistence that I didn’t care what came of her, the servants regularly informed me of her whereabouts. After what happened the night before, I didn't have the energy to argue with Ivan's suggestion, so I allowed him to bring me here. Now, I was regretting my decision and wishing that I had fought a little harder to not come.Letting out a frustrated growl, I looked over at Ivan as he spoke with the guard that watched over her during the day. I didn't know what they were talking about, and I didn’t care. However, before long, the guard was unlocking the door that kept my mother away from the rest of the world."Do we really have to do this?" I asked Ivan as I peered inside the dark building. "There are other way
