Chapter 5

Author: Mizuki Sei
Renee thought she was about to fall flat on her face.

Just then, a man wrapped his strong arm around her waist, catching her fall. The fresh scent of peppermint filled her senses, entrancing the woman entirely.

"You're burning hot… Do you have a fever?" Stefan asked her with a hint of concern in his voice.

The urge to protect her sprang up in his mind, accompanied by the following thought.

'She's so thin and frail, like a feather.'

"This doesn't concern you!" Renee hissed through her teeth as she regained her balance. She stubbornly tried to free herself from his arms.

After the procedure was done, she intended to walk away elegantly, leaving Stefan in the dust. She wanted to avoid casting the impression that she was using her illness to gain sympathy.

However, no matter how tough she tried to act, her body was simply exhausted. Even after gaining her footing, she staggered backward.

Seeing this, Stefan lifted her bridal style and said, "I'll take you to the hospital."

"What are you doing… Let go of me!" Visibly upset, Renee wriggled in his arms with all her might. "Do you not remember that we've separated…"

"You're still considered my wife during the waiting period." The man insisted firmly.

Seeing them leaving together, Briar went into a state of panic. This was not what she wanted to happen.

She immediately planted one of her hands on her hips feigning sickness. "Fan, wait up! I can't walk that fast when I'm pregnant…"

"Stay here, I'll have Elijah pick you up later," Stefan said in a deep voice before turning back towards Renee. "I can't stand back and watch when she's clearly ill."

Hearing this, Renee nearly rolled her eyes to the back of her head.

'What the hell is he doing?! First, he knocks up his mistress and forces his wife into a divorce. Now he's acting as if he still cares for me?!'

'Who does he think he is? Is he trying to string me along? This jerk… Turns out he really is a perfect match for Briar Desrosiers!'

'If that's how you want to play it, don't mind if I do too!'

Renee decided to switch up her strategy and she wrapped her arms around Stefan’s neck. While batting her eyelashes flirtatiously, she said "Thank you, my dear ex-husband."

Stefan's eyes darkened as he was left speechless. No one could tell what was running through his mind at the moment.

On the other hand, the color drained from Briar's face as she was consumed by sheer anger.

At the hospital, Stefan stayed by Renee’s side throughout the entire process. He even went as far as waiting for the blood test results with her.

Fortunately, it didn't take long for the hospital to get back to them.

"Her temperature is currently 39.3 °C. You do realize that she has a viral infection, on top of a bacterial infection, right? If she got here any later, you'd find her a cold corpse rather than diagnosed with a fever."

After going through the report, the doctor adjusted his glasses and lectured Stefan sternly. "What kind of husband are you? How could you let your wife wear such thin clothing in this cold weather, with a fever no less? How heartless can you be?"

Just as Stefan was about to explain, Renee started speaking in a sickeningly sweet tone, choking on fake tears. "Doctor, please don't blame him for this. He may have starved me and left me out in the cold… He may be very temperamental and takes out his anger on me… He may have cheated on me and forced me into a divorce, but… I'm willing to endure this much for him. He's just way too handsome, I couldn't possibly hold a grudge against him!"

Stefan was absolutely confused. 'What is she saying? Why is she so different from what I remember?'

The doctor seemed very taken aback as well, looking at the both of them in disbelief. 'Ah, the younger generation… Always full of… surprises.'

"Your condition should stabilize once you've taken the pills I've prescribed. You may rest here till the IV bag is emptied," said the doctor before leaving the ward.

With that, Stefan and Renee were the only ones left in the ward, which created an odd tension.

Despite being married for four years, the two rarely spent time alone together.

Stefan shoved his hands into his pockets and loomed over Renee, asking. "Are you done with the games?"

Renee cleared her throat awkwardly and replied, "Yeah."

She was now aware that she could’ve lost her life if she had fooled around any longer.

"Why didn't you reschedule today’s meeting when you realized you had a high fever?"

Renee's cheeks were flushed red due to the fever. She lay still on the bed and was back to being the defenseless little bunny that he was familiar with. Oddly enough, this made his heart ache for her.

"What's the point of rescheduling? It's inevitable anyway, isn't it, Master Hunt?" Renee replied softly.

Though she wished for Stefan's love, she knew she shouldn't let herself drown in that fantasy.

"Thank you for today. I'm fine now, you can leave now. Your pregnant lover is waiting for you, you know!"

Her statement seemed to have snapped Stefan back to reality as he responded. "Alright, I'll be off then."

Just then, a tall, slender figure entered the ward.

"Boss, how did you end up in the hospital over a divorce…"

Abby's blessing shocked Renee and Timothy. They were happy and amused."Haha! What a good kid you are! I'm moved to see you care so much about me!" Timothy accepted the knit sunflower from Abby, feeling warm.On the other hand, Renee touched her forehead and felt embarrassed. "Where did you learn that from, Abby? You said such sweet words.""I learned it from Daddy," Abby answered honestly."Your daddy?" Renee was surprised and wondered when Stefan had taught her that. However, Timothy was not surprised. He chuckled and said, "Yeah, she sounded serious like Stef. But he'd only make me mad if he talked like this. It's different with Abby. I love what you said very much!"Timothy sincerely liked them. Hence, he was nicer to Stefan because of it."Stef is so lucky to have these two treasures. Unfortunately, he's ungrateful and did such a bad thing. I'm sure he needs some beating!"Timothy got angry again when he recalled how Renee and Stefan's family was separated. Hence, the two

The study of Hunt Manor came with good sunlight.Timothy was sitting in a rocking chair, reading a book seriously, wearing a pair of reading glasses.Renee saw that scene when she entered the study with the two children. Hence, she hurriedly gave them some advice. "Look, Adie, Abby. He's still reading books at this age. We must never stop learning. So, you should see him as your role model. Do you understand?""Mm!" Abby nodded obediently. "Great Grandpa is well-read. There's nothing he doesn't know. I'll take him as my role model and be a child who loves reading." "What a good girl you are, Abby!" Gratified, Renee touched Abby's head and felt quite satisfied with her good and sweet daughter. Abby always made her happy."Oh, I'm so happy to see you guys." Timothy smiled and nudged his glasses. After that, he seriously said to the children, "I love reading books, including classics, ancient prose, foreign classics, and historical books. I love such books. Plus, I'm well-read j

Francine was playing with Lego with Adie and Abby, but Renee's words made her stop. Francine wore an indifferent face and replied ambiguously, "What's there to talk about? It's just something embarrassing." "But I would like to know." Renee looked eager and approached Francine. "Can you tell me about it? You're Adie's grandma." Renee purposely mentioned that Francine was Adie's grandmother. She hoped that Francine could do her a favor for the sake of the children. "I'm so sorry. I'm old and forgetful. I've long forgotten about the past. You'd better ask someone else." Francine wanted to avoid that question. After touching the children's heads, she got up and left. She just tried to avoid Renee.Speechless, Renee watched Francine leave and subconsciously clenched her fists. She said firmly, "I won't force you if you don't want to tell me about it, but I'll try my best to find out everything.""Whatever." Francine paused before she disappeared around the corner of the stairs.

"Winona, my grandkids are here today. You've got to make some good food now." After calming herself down, Francine instructed Winona Cowfer, who was in the kitchen."Okay, madam."Winona respectfully nodded and said to Renee, "Ms. Everheart, it's been a while since Mr. Adie and Miss Abby were here. Are there any changes to their taste?" "They aren't picky eaters. Just cook as usual," Renee answered politely. "Fine. I'll cook as Mr. Stefan Hunt instructed." Then, Winona went to the kitchen. Renee raised her brows and did not expect Stefan to be that attentive. Surprisingly, Stefan would instruct the kitchen staff about her and their children's preferences. Besides, it had been a long while since they last went there."So, my son still cares about you guys, doesn't he?" Francine sat on the sofa and played with toys with the children while chatting with Renee. Renee sat in front of Francine and was not in a rush to meet Timothy. She wanted to have a nice chat with Francine.

It happened to be the weekend the next day. Renee wanted to take the two children to Hunt Manor. It had been a long while since she last met Timothy. She tried to take the two children there to spend some time with him and make him happy. Besides, she wanted to know about the past between her father and Stefan's parents. On the way there, the two children were excited."It's been a long while since we last met Great Grandpa. Is he doing okay? I've got a gift for him!" Abby said considerately. She hadn't met Timothy many times, but had a deep impression of that kind and old man.Renee was glad to see such a sensible side of Abby. She asked, "Abby, what kind of gift did you prepare for him?""I won't tell you now. You'll know later," Abby replied mysteriously.Renee looked at Adie from the rearview mirror and questioned him. "Adie, what about you?""I didn't prepare any gifts." Adie wore no expression. He added calmly, "I would like to ask him some questions. Maybe only he can an

"Bah!" Renee glared at Quinton and said angrily, "That's nonsense, Quinton! You have to trust Caia's medical skills! She's great. I believe that Margaret will get better under Caia's treatment."She had thought of the same possibility, but she immediately put it aside when it surfaced. She told herself that Margaret would certainly get better. She could not accept the fact that Margaret might leave her one day. "I know that she's great, but sometimes, we can't change people's fate. It's already fixed. Maybe it's almost time for Margaret. You…" "Stop!" Renee became teary and loudly interrupted Quinton. "I don't know what's on your mind. Why do you have to say such pessimistic words? Although you didn't spend much time with her, she's sincere toward you. You sounded like you wanted something to happen to her!""No, you got me wrong. I just feel sorry for you and want you to be mentally prepared." Quinton did not expect Renee to be this stubborn in this affair. He was worried that
