ELIJAH'S POV:

She was completely composed. She looked like a woman who had chosen where she was standing and intended to stand there and nobody was going to have any thoughts about that.

After the statement there were two questions from journalists. I answered both of them steadily and briefly and then we thanked everyone and went back inside.

In the elevator up to my office I exhaled for what felt like the first time since six forty-three that morning.

"You did not have to do that," I said

  • The Unwanted Wife's Return (Ex-Husband Wants Me Back)   They Hurt My Daughter

MARY'S POV:"Some of them cornered me near the playground and asked if Mommy and I were going to get kicked out of our house soon and end up digging through trash cans on the streets."She said it so quietly. Her voice dropped to a low whisper, as if saying it out loud in the quiet room would make the words come true.I could picture the whole thing so clearly in my head. My tiny daughter, surrounded by a group of kids her own age, their faces twisted with a cruel delight they were too young to truly understand. I could hear their loud voices, repeating lines they had heard from their parents at the dinner table, from the internet, or from a world that had already decided I was a terrible person. I could see her standing there all by herself, her tiny hands balled up into tight fists at her sides, her chin held up high even while her eyes filled with tears she refused to drop.I reminded myself that I had just made a solemn pinky promise with her. I could not let my eyes fill up.

  • The Unwanted Wife's Return (Ex-Husband Wants Me Back)   The Bullying

MARY'S POV:"First, Mommy, no matter what I tell you, you can't cry, okay?"My daughter looked at me with total seriousness, holding out her little pinky finger to demand a promise. Her small hand was steady in the dim room, her eyes fixed on mine with a focus that made my chest ache with a sudden sharp pain. The small nightlight in the corner cast a soft glow across her face, showing the round curve of her cheek, the firm set of her jaw, and the faint tiredness under her eyes that had no business being on a child so young.I agreed right away, even though a bad feeling had already started settling deep in my stomach. The feeling was cold and nasty, coiling in my gut like a hidden knot. It crept up my spine, squeezing until taking a simple breath felt hard. I hooked my pinky finger around hers and gave it a gentle, quiet squeeze."I promise, baby. I will not cry."Then she started telling me everything. Her voice was quiet at first, slow and hesitant, as if she was testing how m

  • The Unwanted Wife's Return (Ex-Husband Wants Me Back)   The Secret My Daughter Kept

MARY'S POV:If I had not finally found the courage to pack up and get us out of there, would she have eventually grown up to become just another heartbroken version of me?The cold thought was sharp and painful, cutting right through the cozy warmth of the room. I thought back to all the long years I had spent shrinking my own personality, making myself smaller and quieter until I barely felt real anymore. I thought about the way my sweet little girl had watched my every move, learned from my quiet fear, and absorbed my silence the way a sponge soaks up water.Thank God I had finally left that place, and I swore to myself that I would never, ever go back.I even felt a tiny bit envious of how effortlessly Marl made everything look. He did not just make kids feel safe around him. He naturally made them look up to him, want to be around him, and still feel completely free to be their silly selves. He possessed a natural confidence without being arrogant, a playful spirit without bei

  • The Unwanted Wife's Return (Ex-Husband Wants Me Back)   A Life Without Fear

MARY'S POV:My daughter probably thought she was whispering softly enough that only he could hear, but I caught every single word loud and clear. "Shh! He is Mommy's superhero. She just never wants to admit it to anyone. Whenever someone catches us watching the cartoon on TV, she always pretends I am the one who asked to put it on!"Marl burst out laughing on the spot. The sound filled the cozy carriage, warm, rich, and utterly delighted. I felt an instant mix of deep embarrassment and helpless amusement. My cheeks burned hot, my hands tightened on the grips, and I wanted nothing more than to shrink down and disappear into the seat cushion."You two do know I can hear every single word you are saying, right?" I said, keeping my voice dry and unimpressed. That only made him laugh twice as hard. He practically doubled over, his shoulders shaking with genuine amusement, his breath coming in quick gasps. I was so mortified that I could barely keep my hands steady, and the front tires

  • The Unwanted Wife's Return (Ex-Husband Wants Me Back)   Uncle Marl and His Little Princess

MARY'S POV:I was so touched that I could hardly find my voice. My daughter had been holding on to this single cupcake the whole time, saving it just for me through the whole crazy afternoon. Her small fingers were sticky with bright frosting, her little palm warm against mine as she carefully pressed the container into my hand. The sweet icing princess on top was slightly squished against the plastic lid, the little crown tilted to the side, the pink dress smeared around the edges. But to me, it was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen in my entire life.My heart practically melted right there on the spot. She had been carrying it around for hours, through all the noise and havoc of the schoolyard, through the excitement of handing out treats to her friends, and through the slow ride home in our homemade pumpkin carriage. She had resisted the urge to eat it herself, even though she loved sweets more than anything. She had saved it all for me."Thank you, baby," I whispered s

  • The Unwanted Wife's Return (Ex-Husband Wants Me Back)   Mommy, I Love You the Most

MARY'S POV:Watching the scene turn more chaotic by the second, I could not help worrying that I had made this whole thing way too loud and noticeable. The surrounding parents were staring, some looking amused, others looking thoroughly annoyed by the noise. A couple of teachers were walking around trying to keep order, their voices barely carrying over the loud chatter. Children were everywhere, their cheeks sticky with bright frosting, their hands tightly gripping their treats.Marl, however, did not seem bothered in the least. We still had plenty of extra cupcakes waiting back at the house, far more than the three of us could ever finish on our own. Handing them out to the neighborhood kids meant less food went to waste and a lot of happy faces around the yard. There was really nothing to complain about. After the very last cupcake had been claimed and the line cleared out, I took my daughter's warm hand and helped her climb up into the pumpkin carriage with me.The inside was
