The moment the office door clicked shut behind us, I spun around, my heels biting softly into the carpet. There’s no reason to delay this anymore.

“I’m not here to play games, Regan,” I snapped, the heat rising in my throat before I could hold it back. “Sign the divorce papers.”

He didn’t flinch. He didn’t move. He just stood there—hands at his sides, posture maddeningly calm—his eyes locked on mine like he had been waiting for this exact moment.

“No,” he said.

The word hit like a wall. My fingers curled into fists at my sides. “I’m not asking.”

“I know,” he replied.

That was it. No explanation. Just two words that made my blood boil.

“Then why won’t you just sign them?” I demanded. My voice cracked slightly, not from weakness—but from frustration. From the rage that had been sitting in my chest for years. “You had seven years. Seven years. You don’t get to do this now. You don’t get to suddenly act like any of these matters

The hotel room was quiet, saved for the soft sounds of the city outside. I curled up on the armchair, my phone propped against a glass of juice, so Atticus’s little face filled the screen. He was in his pajamas, hair sticking up from running around, his stuffed dinosaur lying on the pillow beside him. “Mom, look!” he grinned, holding up a paper filled with numbers and stars. “I finished my math homework without mistakes today!”My lips curved into a smile, the tightness in my chest loosening. “That’s amazing, Atti!”“And I read a whole chapter from my science book,” he added proudly. “It’s about planets. Did you know Jupiter is so big it can fit a thousand Earths inside? Aunt Phee even made me quiz her, and I won.”I laughed softly, sipping from my cup. “You’re becoming a little genius.”We went on, talking about the things that filled his days — the classmate who tried to race him at recess but tripped, the drawing contest his teacher announced, a

“It’s strange,” I murmured. “I can still picture myself here at nineteen, writing in that old journal, daydreaming about a life I thought I’d have. Feels like a different person.”Marianne’s smile faded just slightly. She moved closer, brushing my arm gently.“Anastasia,” she said softly, “what’s really wrong?”I hesitated, my eyes fixed on the garden below. The easy answer was to tell her I was just tired. The safe answer was to change the subject. But neither of those would be the truth. For the past years, surprisingly we became closer—like almost a friend.I exhaled slowly, leaning against the cold iron railing. “I don’t know,” I admitted. “I’m… just confused.”She tilted her head slightly, almost like she was studying me. As if she knew something I hadn’t said yet. Before I could ask, she stepped back into my room. I heard the faint sound of movement — drawers shifting, the rustle of fabric — and then she reappeared, holding a large brown enve

“You should’ve told us earlier,” Christopher said firmly. “We could’ve gone with you.”“That’s exactly why I didn’t,” I said evenly, meeting his eyes. “I don’t need an entourage following me into that conversation.”“What conversation?” Gerard asked.I exhaled slowly. “I’m here to finalize the divorce.”The air seemed to shift for a second, but instead of going quiet in disapproval, my brothers exchanged quick looks and then broke into grins. But Marianne, who had been refilling her wine glass, set the bottle down quietly and said nothing.“Finally,” Christopher said, raising his glass slightly.Gerard laughed under his breath. “About damn time. Let’s toast to that.”Even my father nodded, his expression firm but approving. “Good. That chapter’s gone on long enough.”It wasn’t exactly the reaction I expected, but the chorus of support warmed something in my chest. They didn’t need to ask if I was sure — they already knew.

  • The Unwanted Wife   Chapter 208: Family Lunch

By the time I reached the mansion where I grew up, the cold had already seeped into my bones. The familiar iron gates loomed ahead, looking exactly the same as the day I left — tall, imposing, and unyielding. The butler opened the door before I could even knock. “Miss Anastasia,” he greeted with a warm nod. “They’re all in the dining room, waiting for you.”“Thanks,” I said, stepping inside. My heels tapped against the marble floor as I shrugged off my coat. The faint scent of rosemary and roasted meat drifted from the kitchen — my stepmother’s doing, no doubt. Marianne had apparently taken up cooking these days, or at least that’s what Christopher had mentioned over the phone. The moment I stepped into the dining room, the room lit up.“Anastasia!”I grinned and waved at them. “Hi, everyone!”Christopher was the first to rise, striding toward me with that confident smile I’d missed. He wrapped me in a hug, kissing my cheek before ste

His jaw flexed slightly, but he didn’t flinch. “Because I want to know if you really don’t feel anything anymore.”That shut me up. For a moment, I just stared at him. Blinked. He wasn’t joking. His eyes were calm.I let out a laugh — sharp, disbelieving, borderline bitter. “Are you insane?”“I want to see for myself. That’s all,” Regan said quietly. “If after three months, you still want the divorce… I’ll sign. I’ll let you go.”I stared at him. It was the way he said it. Not demanding. Not pleading. Just… calm. Too calm. And that was the problem.“No,” I said instantly, my voice like ice. “No. You don’t get to manipulate this.”His brows drew slightly together. “I’m not.”“Yes, you are.” My heart thundered against my ribs, my hands shaking at my sides. “You think I still want you? That I want to stay here and play house with someone who ruined me?!”His mouth parted, but I didn’t let him speak. I wasn’t done.“You left
