Chapter 1

The smell of alcohol reached me before Brandon Kaiser even walked through the door.

I set my phone and the bill side by side on the coffee table.

He paused and glanced at me. Without saying a word, he crossed the room, sat down on the couch, and pinched the bridge of his nose.

"About your mom's membership card…"

He leaned back and rubbed his temples before continuing in a casual tone, "When Goldie came down with acute gastroenteritis, Alana panicked and called me. I happened to have the card with me, so I used it."

"That was my card," I said. "I got it for my mom."

"Your mom hadn't arrived yet. There was no point letting the card go unused," he countered.

My grip tightened around my phone.

"She went to the hospital today. The nurse told her there was no coverage left on the card, so she paid 398 dollars out of pocket. All she received was the basic exam. They didn't even check her bone density."

Brandon looked up at me. His lips parted as though he wanted to say something, but he swallowed the words.

Finally, he replied curtly, "I'll talk to the hospital and take care of it."

"Take care of what?"

"I'll arrange another exam for your mom."

"Brandon, even if you arrange for another exam now, there's no reversing the three hours she spent waiting at the hospital," I said.

He rolled onto his back and stared at the ceiling. When he spoke again, his voice was strained. "Do you really have to argue about this in the middle of the night?"

I didn't answer. Instead, I thought about what had happened the previous year.

Mom had injured her knee and wanted to use the card to see an orthopedic specialist at Juniper Hospital.

Brandon had told me, "She doesn't need a specialist for something like that. A regular appointment will be fine. The hospital may still need that slot."

Mom had spent the entire morning waiting in the general clinic.

That same year, Alana Sutton's cat had the sniffles, and Brandon got out of bed at 3:00 am to drive it to Juniper Pet Center for VIP treatment.

"When Alana's mom went to Stonby for the winter, you booked business-class tickets for her family," I said, looking directly at him. "When my mom came to Heston, you never once asked whether she needed someone to pick her up."

Brandon sat up, rose to his full height, and looked down at me.

"Alana's dad requested that I make the arrangements. I couldn't exactly turn him down after he came to me for help."

"You didn't turn anyone down last year, either," I said. "The only person you turned down was my mom."

He stared at me for a couple of seconds, then walked around the coffee table and headed for the bedroom.

At the doorway, he spoke without looking back, "I'll talk to the hospital about the membership card. Don't bring this up again. It'll look bad if my coworkers hear about it."

The bedroom door closed behind him, while I remained where I was in the living room.

Two pieces of paper lay side by side on the coffee table.

One was an itemized bill for 6,300 dollars from Juniper Pet Center, with an echocardiogram listed as the first item.

The other was Mom's receipt for the 398 dollars she had paid out of pocket. The bill was blank except for the total, and the notes section was empty.

Just then, my phone lit up.

Mom had sent me a voice message.

I clicked on it, and her gentle voice came through the speaker, "Hannah, I've made it to the hotel. I put the apples I brought you in the fridge."

I didn't reply.

I locked my phone, picked up the 398-dollar receipt, folded it in half, and then folded it once more and slipped it into my coat pocket.

My heartbeat remained perfectly steady, as though nothing had happened.

Two months later, the platform sent me an analytics report, highlighting a specific number in red."You've helped over 6,400 families schedule their mothers' first senior wellness checkups."I snapped a screenshot for my favorites folder before checking the community forum.Mom was practically a celebrity in the group by now. Her profile picture was a shot I took of her last summer, showing her sitting out on the porch of a rustic cabin with an embroidery hoop in her lap.Whenever someone posted a photo of their lab results to ask what a high reading meant, she would occasionally reply, "It's outside the normal range. I highly recommend scheduling a follow-up with your doctor."The very first time a user addressed her as Coach Linda, she forwarded the screenshot to me immediately."Hannah, look! They're calling me Coach Linda.""That's because you earned it," I told her.The train ride home took a little over four hours, getting me into town right around 3:00 pm.Mom was alrea

Juniper Group circulated its internal disciplinary notice on Thursday.Megan forwarded it to me, first sending a screenshot and then adding, "Serves him right."I clicked on the image and skimmed the notice."Former director of the Marketing Department, Brandon Kaiser, has received a formal reprimand for misusing internal access privileges to charge a customer's account and provide company resources to a third party."He'll be transferred out of the Marketing Department, demoted, and placed on disciplinary probation."I enlarged the screenshot and read it again, checking every line to make sure I hadn't missed anything. Once I was certain, I closed it.Alana released her apology statement 12 hours later.By the time it appeared in my feed, it had already received well over a hundred thousand views. She had written three long paragraphs, but they all boiled down to one excuse."I had no idea. Someone else arranged it for me."She never mentioned Brandon by name. Throughout the

From what I heard, Brandon was first called in by the company on Monday afternoon.Juniper Group's compliance team was waiting in a small conference room on the ninth floor. Before going inside, he stood in the hallway for a full 30 seconds, took a deep breath, and pushed open the door.Three people sat across from him. The person in the middle slid a document across the table. It showed the transaction Brandon had entered into the system three months earlier, complete with the date, amount, account holder, and every other relevant field."What was the purpose of this transaction?" the compliance officer asked."The pet center was testing out some new equipment.""Then, why did you use a customer's account?"Brandon had no answer. His second meeting took place two days later. This time, an HR representative had joined the compliance team. A copy of the internal access logs lay open on the table. They demanded the same request again. "Please explain why a customer's account

Brandon had the morning shift the next day.I heard him leave. The lock clicked behind him, and his footsteps gradually faded down the hallway. When I sat up, a narrow strip of sunlight slipped through the curtains and fell across the receipt on the nightstand. It lay open on the surface, the printed figure of 398 dollars nearly bleached out by the morning sun.I got out of bed and started packing.Everything in the closet went straight into cardboard boxes. I didn't sort anything by season or color. T-shirts were crammed in beside puffy winter coats. The bag of apples was still sitting on a shelf in the refrigerator. The bag had been tied with a loose knot, and the apple skins were already beginning to wrinkle.I took it out, turned the bag over to check the other side, and then tucked it into the bottom of my backpack and zipped it shut.My best friend, Megan Cooper, arrived at 10:00 am carrying a roll of packing tape and a fresh pack of trash bags. The first thing she notice

Once Mom was done with her exam, I took her hand and led her toward the parking lot.Someone came running up behind us, his heavy footsteps accompanied by ragged breaths.Brandon hurried around to block our path. He had changed into an ordinary jacket, his hair was disheveled from running, and he stretched his arm out to stop me from opening the door."Hannah, let me drive you home. I'll explain what happened later."He then turned and addressed Mom, saying, "Mrs. Murphy, I'm sorry I kept you waiting all morning."The back of Mom's heel had been rubbed raw, and she stood with most of her weight shifted onto her left foot.I nodded, and she climbed into the back seat. As I walked around to the other side of the car, Brandon's phone rang.My hand had just closed around the door handle when he glanced at the screen and hesitated. Alana's name lit up the screen.Silence filled the car for several seconds. Then, her broken sobs echoed from the speaker."Brandon… My mom passed out a

That weekend, I took Mom to another Juniper Hospital location and paid out of pocket to add a bone density scan and tumor marker screening to her exam. While she was in the examination room, I waited on a bench in the hallway.A large screen was built into the wall across from me, playing promotional videos for the company's various facilities on a continuous loop. When it reached the segment about Juniper Pet Center, the video switched to a live stream titled, "Behind the Scenes at Juniper Pet Center with Alana."Alana sat on an examination table with Goldie in her arms. Brandon stood beside her, holding an ultrasound probe as he explained the cat's digestive tract to the camera.Comments scrolled down the screen, overlapping so quickly that they were almost impossible to follow."The boyfie really knows his stuff!""The boyfie looks so good today!""Look at how sweet he is with Goldie!"Alana smiled into the camera. "Stop calling him that! He has a girlfriend."Rather than
