Chapter 8: The Ambush

By the time I got there, the four horsemen already told their men to pull the rogue vampires from four different directions. I saw them scattered each four of them took one rogue vampire. There were four clusters so I asked Zachary how many they were.

[Zach, how many are they?]

I jumped to another side of the roof, looked like the building didn’t have a rooftop which was good. There was only a roof. We only needed to handle two floors without risking the rogue vampires might move the doctor using the outlet on the rooftop. It was our beginner’s luck that the building didn’t have a rooftop. We needed to think about some more tactics if this kind of ambush happened again.

[Five outside, my lady. One down, Victor and I are taking care four more. John and Ezekiel are getting inside with few men. We don’t really know how many inside, but we’re guessing they’re no more than five or six left inside. The building is quite small with only two stories. And I believe the rogue vampires can’t move the doctor because we already surrounded the building. This is very rare, rogues vampires usually only two or three sharing the nest. This many, we would have to ask the doctor what he has been working on that makes the rogue vampires be this advance.]

I kept on being proud of my four horsemen. I might be the oldest, but they learned fast. But still, I had to make sure,

[Did you see them with their machetes and flare guns, Zach?]

I was waiting, making sure the outside condition could be handled by Zach and Viktor so I could get in and retrieve the doctor.

[John and Ezekiel? Absolutely, my lady! Along with the rest of the men]

I walked along the edge of the roof, finding one window vulnerable enough to be broken in.

[No one is human, right?]

[Nope, all humans are in the station, just like you told Viktor. The only human we detected is the doctor inside the building, the only heat source of human’s body. They’ll have to get through the rogue vampires to get through the doctor.]

[I see. Do you and Viktor need help outside? I can make the fireworks]

[Haha, we’d love to see that, my lady. Your fireworks are always the merriest. But I think it’s better if you help John and Ezi, I believe the doctor would love to see his queen right away that he needs to know we care about him as a human.]

John was incredibly right. Any human soul in this Imperial Colony really needed to know that I was the Vampire Queen made to be their protector. And that was what I was about to do by looking for the right window to break in. But there was something new,

[Ezi? After a decade you all finally came up with shortest version of Ezekiel’s name?]

While I was having mind meeting with Zach, I swung myself to one of the windows that looked like easier to break and was ready with a machete and flare gun.

[Haha, yes, my lady. It was never a problem if we have only two or three rogue vampires to slay, but this time, to be honest we have problem with his long name to share the tactics.]

My boots’ heels broke one of the windows, and I got into the corner of the open-plan room, the one side that wasn’t painted with a dim light from the opposite direction.

[You’re absolutely right, Zach. Ok, I’m on the second floor. Looks like there isn’t much vampire here, it’s quiet and I see only the light from the lab. The noise came from the first floor. I guess they’re gathering down stair. They don’t gather on the second floor possibly because they’re afraid of the sunlight that might be breaking in. Though all of the windows here are painted to prevent the sunlight breaking in, in the day, I believe they let the doctor working alone here by himself most of the time. Finish those four and get in as soon as you can, let Viktor wait on the outside perimeter, he’ll know what to do if any rogue vampire loose or if he sees the doctor]

[Yes, ma’am. Be careful!]

There was no sound on the room. It was quite huge for a medical lab, so I was guessing that the building was unfinished. I moved quietly to the sides that had some lighting. Those sides were covered with vertical blinds only. It seemed like the lab was there.

One machete I had in a hand and flare gun on the other. I was ready if there was a rogue vampire attacked me. But I didn’t hear or smell any. So I carried on. It was possible that the vertical blinds used, so that the lighting could be focus only for the room that I was guessing it was a lab.

Rogue vampires were new vampires that sometimes when they were turned then it would take time for them to adjust their senses including the eyes with the lights. That was why the vertical blinds were used because they couldn’t stand the lights while the doctor needed the lab to be highly illuminated.

Consuming human’s blood helped them to get through this process and calmed them. Unlike us the older and civilized vampires, we lived like humans. The only differences were we consumed animal and volunteer human’s blood and we couldn’t walk in the daylight or the sunlight would burn us.

I approached the vertical blinds and was pretty sure, there wasn’t any rogue vampires because it was impossible for them to be able to be in the lab. The light would burn their eyes. Not exactly burning as in fire from the flare gun, but it was more like watery burn their eyes. They’d be blind for a certain period but it wouldn’t damage their eyes.

I got into the lab and was moving slowly when suddenly a cold iron suddenly hit the back of my head. I was about to swing my machete but I smelled his human form and I turned myself to face the man stood before me holding a bar stool used to hit me just a while ago.

He and I stood there in freeze. We stared at each other that seemed like forever. He was around six feet two inches if I measured him right. He was tall and slender as I could see there was no bulky arm behind the dirty lab coat that he wore. Had he eaten yet these past few days after the kidnapping?

His spectacles hanging low to the sides of his roman nose. His moustache and beard along with other facial hair on his perfect jawline was untidy. Beneath the facial hair, the smear shape lips looked extremely white pale with some bits of chapped sides. He might be dehydrated. His hair tousled typically as a nerd. What struck me the most was his almond eyes sharply had their gaze on me.

He stood there puzzled and I finally let out a free and loud laugh as I didn’t care if the rogue vampires heard me because I was ready with my machete and flare gun. His expression changed from intensely aware to slowly relaxed when I asked,

“What are you doing hitting your own savior?” and I was still laughing showing my vampire fangs.

His mouth then shaped an O and he startled,

“Ooo… ooww sorry, my queen! ” He suddenly threw the bar stool that he used to hit me a while ago and he was down on his knees looked like he was about to beg.

“Seriously… Doc! ” I was still laughing and couldn’t help myself for not giggling because of the stupid thing he had done.

As I was still laughing, John and Ezi came suddenly might be because they were hearing my unstoppable laugh.

“What is it, my lady? Are you okay?” John was asking me while Ezi approached the doctor who was on his knees in front of me.

“What are you doing on your knees, doc? Do you dare to ask to marry our queen?” Ezi, the funniest path whisperer, was shoving the edge of his machete slowly to the doctor’s neck.

John, the doctor and I suddenly was in awe looking at Ezi’s direction with our slightly opened mouth. Then…

[ ] these punctuation used to give a sign that the sentences were said as a means of communication between vampires. These vampires had these abilities because they were from one root of a Maker, Vivienne, who used to be a werewolf that could communicate in a pack and was the descendant of the Empath humans, the mind reader. Since she was downgraded to a vampire because of the Tribrid’s curse, her ability was also lessened to be able to communicate only one on one to her child only one at a time. I use the punctuation because GoodNovel app for mobile doesn’t show the post to be in italic. It only applies if you open the story using PC. Happy reading 
