NINA

As soon as I reach the top of the staircase where they await me, I am greeted with total silence. King Vlademir Duskmire’s red eyes pierce my soul, while his wife and children remain motionless at his side. I feel like I’m being evaluated, as if they’re searching me for some flaw.

I cross my wings one over the other, showing that I’m there to serve, and lower my head like a good servant, since that’s what I came for.

I hear a low laugh, almost a whisper, but with my keen hearing I can catch it. The king approaches me, takes my hand, and with the other lifts my chin to look into his eyes.

“Welcome, Nina.” He smiles, a wide smile that reveals his canines. “Eros has been waiting for you for a long time; I hope you’re sweet and tasty, as beautiful as you are.” My legs tremble at his words. I remain silent, and the queen approaches me, eyeing my wings.

“Beautiful as blood.” She smiles. “May I touch?” she asks, and I nod yes.

The queen gently touches my feathers; I stay silent. I glance sideways, seeing the king’s sons; their red eyes stare at me.

“These are my youngest sons. Eros is over there; he just arrived,” the king says, turning my face toward one of the castle’s columns.

Leaning against the column, I see him. I can’t hold back a sigh of fear, but also because of his beauty. His red eyes fix on me intently, medium-length black hair falling over part of his face, black clothes like the night against his pale skin. Beautiful, extremely beautiful and deadly.

“Come meet her,” the king calls him, and my heart races.

I feel his gaze on me, so fixed and absorbed that it seems to be inside my soul.

“Your heart is racing, female. I can hear the flow of your blood from here,” Eros says, and now I understand why everyone was staring at me so intently. They were paying attention to my blood.

“It’s enough to make you hungry just hearing it,” one of his brothers says, and I shrink back, trying to control my heartbeat. If they decide to devour me, I won’t last the day.

While the royal family watches me with hungry gazes, I gather all my courage to face my fate. I won’t be just another victim heading straight to certain death—no. I will fight for my freedom, do what I was assigned to do, and leave here with my head held high.

“Don’t be afraid, my dear.” King Vlademir’s voice booms like thunder, echoing down the staircase. “You were chosen for a great destiny.” He smiles, showing his sharp canines. No matter how hard I try, I can’t look away from them. “You should feel honored.”

Honored to have someone latched onto my neck, sucking my blood? No, I don’t feel that way. I turn my gaze to Eros; he looks at me with indifference, as if I were an insignificant fly. A shiver runs through my body, and it’s not from the cold. It’s fear and something more. Something I can’t understand. Something that draws me to him, like a magnet. I try to resist, but it’s useless. I’m hypnotized by those red eyes that promise pain. I’m surrendered to my fate.

Eros extends his hand, calling me without a word. The king releases me, and in slow steps, I walk toward him. My heart beats so hard it hurts; I see his smile as he hears my heartbeat. A cruel and thirsty smile.

I stop and take a step back before taking his hand. Maybe it’s madness—I can’t challenge him, I know that—but the way he’s looking at me causes so many strange things inside my body.

“I won’t be just a source of food for you, Prince. I won’t be your prey.” He smiles, showing his canines, and approaches me, sniffing the air. Silence falls among the royal family, who watch us with surprised looks. I know my courage might lead me to death faster, but I can’t hold back what’s stuck in my throat.

“You’re not prey, half-breed female. Prey has to be hunted, and you were promised to me from the day you were born. You have only one purpose.” He wets his lips as if eager. “To be mine, only mine, for as long as I desire it to be so.”

His voice sends chills through me. He grabs my arm, squeezing hard, leaving red marks from his fingers on my exposed skin.

“Ow! You’re hurting me!” I try to pull my arm away, but he lets go, now holding it politely, as if what I said meant nothing.

“So fragile!” he whispers near my ear, keeping his smile. Then he guides me inside the castle. I turn my face and look at the horizon, seeing the weak sun among the trees.

Maybe this is the last time I’ll see the sun—not the cold sun of Morbóvia, but the warm sun of my home.

NINAA few minutes ago, Eros went to speak with the king after being summoned, leaving me alone in the room with our son. It’s a strange feeling—my body is different, lighter than before, and I know it’s because of my vampiric side that is now fully with me.Finally, I am whole, and curious about this new life I will have from now on.Amun is beautiful, my perfect son. I can hardly believe it happened like this, so quickly. I feel a little sad that I didn’t see my belly grow, but I did see my vampiric self with him in her womb, and I felt him kick. The important thing is that my son is healthy, big, and strong.I place my son at my breast to nurse him. It’s as if I instinctively know I have to do this—even though he is a pure vampire, as the healer said, I feel certain inside that he needs my milk. He needs to be breastfed.“That’s it, my son,” I say, feeling him suckle strongly, and I notice my body releasing milk.Eros opens the door to our room. I see how anxious and worried he loo

Months have passed, and she vanished without a trace—I can’t even pick up her scent anymore. And that’s not good, because if there’s no scent, it means she’s using magic.Ancient and forbidden magic.I didn’t leave the castle, even though shame burns across my face like the sun every time I see my cousin. I punished him so many times, and in truth, my sister was the guilty one.I’ve buried my feelings for Nina deep inside myself. No matter how difficult it is, I have no right to feel anything for her. Especially now, after everything that happened. And the worst part is that I still don’t have the courage to tell the king about my sister—or about what she did. But with Nina’s current situation, everyone has set Marian aside. No one has asked about her more than twice.I push open the castle doors and enter slowly, wearing the same tired, lifeless expression as always

EROSSeven months have passed since Nina last opened her eyes. Seven months of watching over her day and night, not knowing when she will wake. Seven months of torturing myself with guilt for putting her in this state. No matter how hard I try, I’m not sure I’ll know how to rule the kingdom like this. I’ve been trying to think more carefully about my actions, about everything. Even Adrian has been helping me a little—reluctantly, more withdrawn, silent, as though he’s drifting in some distant world. After that conversation where he laid bare his feelings and desires, we never touched the subject again. He only speaks to me about kingdom matters now. And he said that as soon as Nina wakes, he will leave.Marian disappeared too. I found it strange that she vanished overnight; it’s not like her. NINAI open my eyes and find myself surrounded by darkness. A darkness so deep that I can’t make out anything in front of me. The cold invades me, making me tremble and shiver. But if I’m dead, why is my heart still beating? So many questions I can’t answer.Marian’s words echo in my mind like knives tearing through my chest. She betrayed me, deceived me, used me. She wore a mask of kindness, hiding her true cruel face. And what about Eros? Did he lie too? ADRIANI stared out the glass windows of the library, watching the moon shine bright in the sky. The air was cold and damp; the smell of mold and dust lingered, but I didn’t care. A shiver ran down my spine, though it wasn’t from the chill. It was the anguish consuming me from within. My decision had already been made, but that didn’t make things any easier. I knew Marian would suffer from my departure, yet I had no other choice. I couldn’t stay here, watching the woman I loved in Eros’s arms—even though he was her mate and I was not.I needed to leave, to start my existence somewhere else, far from them, far from everything. Perhaps in two or three weeks, I would go. Just long enough to know that Nina was well and safe. Just long enough to convince myself that my choice was truly the best one—and deep down, I knew it was.The library is rarely used, and I love this place. It’s my refuge, my sanctuary, my escape. The book I’m looking at shows possible places where I could retreat and

EROSI head to the library, Adrian’s favorite place. As soon as I open the door, I see him seated in a leather armchair, surrounded by ancient scrolls and old books. He has always been fascinated by history and magic—far more than I ever was. I prefer action and adventure, which I once thought made me a natural leader for Morbóvia. At least, that’s what I believed until I realized I still lacked certain things—qualities I need to learn if I’m to become a good king in the future. The air is thick with mold and dust, as though no one has entered here in centuries. I feel a slight tickle in my nose, but I ignore it. I walk calmly toward my cousin, trying not to make a sound. I want to surprise him, but I also don’t want to startle him.Adrian only lifts his eyes from the book he’s reading—an old volume about places in Morbóvia, locations not every vampire dares to visit. He stares at me with a cold expression, then returns his gaze to the page, pretending not to notice my presence. Adria
