IVORY POV

I didn't wait for the morning.

I found her in the kitchen at midnight, sitting alone at a long wooden table with a cup of tea she wasn't drinking. Samantha was drying dishes by the sink, half asleep on her feet, her long hair falling over her shoulder. When she saw my face she put the towel down very gently and slipped out of the room without a word.

"You promised me," I said.

"Ivory..."

"Don't say my name like that. Like I am a little kid who dropped her ice cream." My voice was alre

IVORY POVSomeone was shaking my shoulder."Get up."I mumbled into the pillow. The window was black. There wasn't even a bird yet."Ivory. Up.""Mom, it's the middle of the night.""It's five o'clock. Put on your sneakers."She was already dressed in old grey leggings and a faded black tank top, with her hair tied back so tight it pulled at her temples. She looked younger like that. She looked like the woman in the photo I had found once in her closet, the one she had quickly taken away from me and said was just an old friend."Where are we going?""To see how much you have been hiding from yourself."The clearing behind our house was a flat circle of grass ringed by tall pines, and the mist hung so low it covered my ankles. The sky was just turning the color of dishwater. My mother didn't say a word. She stretched her arms over her head, rolled her neck, and then pointed at the tree line."Three laps around the lake. Go.""Three? Mom, I didn't even do P.E. in senior year.""I know.

  • The Vampire King's Mate   49. It Was My First

DANIEL POVThe Connor mansion had forty rooms and not one of them had a heartbeat.I walked through the front hall at midnight, my shoes echoing on the marble, and nobody asked where I'd been. Nobody ever did. The maid had left a plate of cold chicken in the kitchen with a sticky note, Eat, Mr. Daniel. The chef had gone home. My mother was in Lisbon, or Milan, or wherever she went these days. Her last text had come on graduation morning, just four words: Congratulations darling. Sorry I am late. She wasn't late. She was never going to come. There was a thin line of light under the study door. I stopped in front of it and listened. Glass clinked against glass. A lighter snapped open and shut.I pushed the door open without knocking. My father was sitting in his leather chair with the heavy curtains drawn behind him, as always. Daylight was a thing this house had never really welcomed. The room was blue with smoke. There was a half-empty bottle of dark whiskey on the desk, two glasses b

  • The Vampire King's Mate   48. Excuse Me

IVORY POVThe Head Guardian's manor sat at the very top of the hill, and I understood why the second I walked through the doors. Everything about it was built to make you feel small. The ceiling in the dining hall was so high I couldn't see where the beams ended. Long tables ran down the room in neat rows, white cloths, silver plates, candles burning even though it was noon. At least a hundred people were already seated. They all turned to look at the same time when Mom and I came in.I kept my chin up. I had borrowed a dark blue dress from Lia's cousin that was two inches too long, and I was wearing my own sneakers because the only shoes Mom had packed for me were flat, white, and ugly. Not yellow. Not loud. Evelyn would have to find something else to complain about. The room was silent for about three seconds. Then, at the second table, an old man in a grey jacket got to his feet. Then the woman beside him stood. Then another man, and another. It rolled through the hall like a wave,

IVORY POVI woke up to the sound of someone humming. For three whole seconds I forgot. I thought I was in my own bed, that Alicia was downstairs burning toast, that my phone would have forty messages from Daniel by now. Then my eyes opened on a pale green ceiling and a window full of pine trees, and it all came back like a bucket of cold water."Good morning, sleepy girl!"Lia was by the window, pulling open the curtains. Bright light poured over the quilt. She had on a fresh white apron and her rosy cheeks looked even rosier than yesterday."What time is it?" I croaked."Seven. You slept like a stone. Your mother's been up since five." She set a pitcher of water on the dresser. "Breakfast is downstairs. Eggs, bacon, and Gabriel's blackberry jam, which he will tell you about whether you ask or not."I managed a smile. It felt like moving a muscle I'd forgotten I had.The kitchen was full of noise. Gabriel was at the stove, a huge man with arms like tree trunks and soil still under his

DANIEL POVI stood in the hallway of the gym holding two coffees I had gone to find for her, and I couldn't see her anywhere.Graduation was over. Parents were hugging. Someone's little brother was running in circles with a cap on his head. Girls kept stepping into my way with their phones out, Daniel, one picture, Daniel, come on, please, and I kept saying "later" in a voice that was getting smaller and uglier each time.I had watched her walk across that stage. I had clapped so loudly that Zeke told me to calm down. She had looked out at the seats, scanning for someone, and then her face had changed. Just a small thing. A flicker. Like a light going off in a window. She was looking for her mom, I realized now. And her mom hadn't come."Have you seen Ivory?" I asked Alicia. She was standing with Zeke by the exit doors, red hair piled on top of her head, the green dress from prom replaced by a graduation gown she'd tied up at the waist. She looked up from her phone."I thought she was

The meeting is over.""I know what I said.""Then give me the phone.""I can't.""You threw mine out of a window!" I was shouting now. I didn't care who heard. "You took my phone, you took my school, you took my friends, and you took him! Mom, he thinks I disappeared. Do you understand that? He's probably standing in the middle of that school looking for me right now!""The

IVORY'S POV We had been walking for thirty minutes now. Through cracked pavements and across the dry school field, then down a shaded path I didn’t even know existed. I hadn’t said much—just followed in silence like some blindfolded kitten. But now my feet were aching, my bag strap had started to

IVORY'S POV I just wished they’d all let me be. With trembling hands, I dusted myself off, the remnants of the apple fritter crushed beneath my shoes, my broken glasses tucked into my pocket like a badge of survival. My fingers grazed the fresh bruise swelling near my cheekbone, and I hissed quiet

Damon’s POV Thirty minutes later, I arrived home, only to find Dad on the porch, puffing at his old pipe like he was trying to smoke away the past. "Why did you come back so late?" he asked without turning, his eyes lost in the distance. "Like you care," I muttered under my breath, heading straig

IVORY’S POV Detention? No, no, no. That word echoed in my head like a curse. I couldn’t afford it. Not with my grades hanging by a thread and my self-esteem already six feet under. What did I ever do to deserve this? The ride home was quiet—eerily so. The taxi driver didn’t speak, and I didn’t da
