As they stepped a foot outside of the church they tried to get their bearings on what had happened to them recently, they looked at each other with a glance that was understanding, they both were on the same page: confused yet reassured in it.
The thing that was nothing more than a loose theory, an excuse of sorts to continue with this case, had become a confusing reality that was hard to take in.
But a steady voice inside their heads told them to believe the nun and do as she asked because she might be on the money on the death of Lord Reginald.
"Well then…that was quite…enlighting" Elizabeth said breaking the silence, Thomas Kent nodded positively in response, he was still a little in shock at what the Sister had told them.
"She seems to be sure of herself" while walking down towards the main road "not a shred of doubt on that woman."
"It was quite the excitement…" Elizabeth said looking puzzled for the first time since Mr Kent had known her "while I tend to be very open minded I am having a hard time coming around this, even tho I am compelled to follow her lead. "
"I agree with the sentiment, my lady." he stood beside her as they walk.
To their sanity Henry was walking towards them with a cheery face and an I-know-I-am-late expression "Good afternoon…you both look rather disturbed" he said observing the state of their semblances.
"More than you will be able to believe and more than I can comprehend at the moment I am afraid" Elizabeth said with a worried expression fearing this time that she wouldn’t be able to make him trust her words.
If the religious woman did believe her version of the story and confirmed it then Henry would probably wound not accept it since he was a man who had little time for religious superstitions.
"Probably more than you want to hear."
"Try me, Elizabeth."
"Well apparently our renowned Lord Reginald was in fact attacked by a creature of the night, and a nun has tasked us to find it, identify it and lastly destroy it." Henry's expression towards Elizabeth's words was one of sarcastic amusement.
Her childhood friend was holding his urging impulse to laugh out loud, but refrained as Elizabeth continued "our dear Lord Reginal must have crossed paths with the creature and mistook it for a romantic companion and that lead to his untimely demise…and the answer to it lies in that ‘Den of Sin’"
"Now I know what you meant when I wouldn’t believe you" his grin was annoying to the blond woman, and Kent didn’t appreciate the attitude either.
"But I will tag along, for my amusement" he had a gleam in his eyes, he couldn’t wait to see where this was heading "So what’s our next step?"
Setting aside her uncomfortable feeling of being mocked Elizabeth answered "We are going back to the Night Rose to find to bait the creature and identify it"
There was a small silence after she spoke.
Thomas fixed his handkerchief as henry whistled a note out, and the woman caught on to their unease "We are all going, I am not discussing this further…I will go with you both to the Night Rose and figure out who…or better still what is causing it. "
"And how do you suppose to archive it, my lady?" Thomas said tactfully.
Henry, on the other hand, was blunter "Will you march head-on?" he was extremely amused "Will you play the role of a lady of the night? I would like to see your mother's reaction if so."
It took every ounce of her energy not to respond aggrieved, after a second she answered "Not quite what I have in mind" she then turned her smile into one of malignant compliance "in fact I don’t think anyone would recognize me in your clothes".
Another silence was created, but this one was created out of the shock of cross-dressing.
"I don’t find that funny" Henry said defensively.
Elizabeth replicated the same face he made when he was ‘amused’ by the supernatural part of the death "I am glad that you don’t find it funny because I was serious."
Even Thomas was uneasy about the prospect but was more open to the idea "And how would that work?" from his words apparently logistics were his actual concern.
"Well…Henry and I are roughly the same height, so I would wear some of his clothes, pull my hair back fix it in a bun and hide it in a top hat, and walk right in with the other gents." she was quite happy with her idea.
"That can potentially work" Mr Kent added, "I would offer my clothes but I am afraid that I am too tall for them to fit you without giving you away, Mister Henry should be the one to agree."
Henry scoffed at the whole thing "You certainly do not take her side" he was quite vexed now "how would you even hide your" everyone opened their eyes directing their gaze to him, the young man was uncomfortable even saying it "bosom"
The answer came quickly from the blond noblewoman "a will wrap a cloth around it and press it back, and that would create the illusion" henry softened a little hearing her idea, but still had a quarrel with it "oh Henry" her tone was pleading yet resolved "think about it…three pair of eyes are better than two."
"But it could be dangerous" Henry retorted with an exasperating tone
"Not as dangerous as whatever is killing people in that way." she smiled slyly at him.
Henry felt defeated "Fine, I will lend you my clothes and we will head there tonight" the glee on Elizabeth’s face was endearing "but we need to be careful, a woman discovered as impersonating a man can be dangerous."
"Thank you Henry," she said smug as the lord was when he arrived, soon enough she lead the way towards Henry Lewis's house.
The blond maiden looked at herself in the mirror of Henry's private chambers, she was checking her chest after wrapping a soft silk cloth around her bosom, she wanted to create the perfect disguise. She took one of Henry's shirts and managed to adapt it to her form, and put the necessary layers on top, she made an upwards bun and hid it in a top hat, she used a little light makeup to make herself a little more masculine.Elizabeth took a good look in the mirror after all the clothes were on her, she thought she did a pretty good job, but only the men in her company could decide if her deceit was successful. She stepped out of the room and looked at the two silent men on the sofa. Both of them were silent when they saw her in men’s clothes, now she knew it was a successful disguise, Thomas' expression was the most positive yet and it filled her with confidence."You make a handsome man just as you make a beautiful woman," Trainee Kent said praising her with a smile, Henry on the other
The disguise worked like a charm, she was even treated to a ‘sir’ on the way in and her partners in monster hunting could tell that she was enjoying herself. The place looked better than it did in the morning, it was clearly meant to be enjoyed at night and with all the implications that come with it. The Night Rose was working near its limits of capacity. No doubt that most people there were here for gossip, drink, entertainment or companionship, no matter what a man had died in it 24 hours ago, the poor maids tried to put a brave face on and look amicable but it was clear that these women could barely do their job…clear to Elizabeth at least.Henry spoke in a whisper "I will go first taking the east of the place" he then directed a glance at Thomas Kent and said "If someone asks the nature of your presence just say you are my valet since men of your fortune don’t often appear in this places." he then heads off to his destination. There was a fraction of a second where Thomas felt re
Elizabeth finished her drink quickly and walked a respectable distance between her and Lilith, not enough for her to feel like she was being tailed.Lilith apparently came to greet another Lord, this one she recognized Lord Maleon who was part of parliament, and she was being very sweet by greeting him.She secured herself in a dark spot and in earshot distance."Lord Maleon" her voice was more seductive now and her actions were bolder "all the girls are fighting to spend time with you" the mature grey-haired gentleman was responding very well to her advances "lucky for both of us…it’s my turn.""Miss Lilith" he was happy for the attention "you have always denied me, told me no, and now you are seeking me out." he could barely believe his luckThe beautiful dark-haired woman placed her hand on his chest, leaning closer to him "I must admit I was shy" she was clearly playing him up but he was enthralled by her "but now I can’t fight this anymore… let's go up and spend the night togeth
The coachman under Henry's employ drove his carriage as quickly as he could towards Whitechapel, the destination was Saint Mary Matfelon.Whitechapel was at a crossword at the time being, an illustrious place beginning to deteriorate, some parts of it were becoming quite tragic as many people were pushed to small rooms together cramped. And there the carriage when trough ti streets while inside the vehicle Elizabeth that was calmed and collected explained what Thomas and her experienced, the young lord said nothing just heard them he was thinking they were mad but he did saw how upset Elizabeth was when he saw her.She was still in gentleman's clothes but her hair had been styled back to one of a lady. His sarcasm would not help matters, so he just looked at her in disbelief trying to believe her but failing to do so, it was too fantastical for him. Henry was determined to get her to the ‘nun’ and fulfil her need but there was no way he would fall for her story.Thomas sat beside her
Sister Margaret took bold steps towards the creature with a stake in her hand "I will send you back to hell you demon" she was aiming towards the vampire’s chest."You fool…" Lilith said as she held the woman’s hand that held the wooden stake "you are mistaken if you think that you could dispose of me, you don’t even understand what I have been doing." her strength was so that the nun’s legs quivered and rested in a kneeling position.Even tho her body had betrayed Sister Margaret spirits did not "I don’t care because you can only do the work of the devil, and like him so shall fall." the determination in her eyes was great but Lilith’s grip was mightier.Thomas thought quickly and took a silver coin from his pouch and aimed it at Lilith’s hand, the one holding the sister, and threw it at her quickly and precisely that was enough for her to let go of her victim.Sister Margaret fell to the ground, and Lilith ran towards an abandoned building nearby, Thomas and Elizabeth ran towards th
Thomas opened the door with a kick fearing a deathly end to his new friend, but alas it was Elizabeth there laying beside Lilith’s body, he rushed to her side and help her up."It seems you didn’t need me to finish this." He said with a friendly smile allowing her to shift her entire weight on him."I was too scared to shout for you…" she said modestly while standing up and being close to Thomas’s body "I am surprised that I could manage this, it was not pleasant at all.""But you did" He reassured her kindly."We need to return to sister Margaret" she said as she cleaned her skirt from the dust and debris and walked beside Thomas getting away from the remains of Lilith the Vampire. They left the abandoned building to find the nun standing at the scene of the crime while police surrounded her, they were investigating the death of Lord Henry Lewis and his coachmen. With an understanding look she glanced at them, and with a nod, they confirmed the end of the nightly creature. The next m
Elizabeth had set up shop a block away from oxford street, which would help with ‘customers’. The place had a large window glass, giving a good view of the street, with letters painted on it reading: Society of Strange Occurrences; the door was beside the glass and it was painted green, as it was Elizabeth’s favourite colour. It was a two-room establishment, the first one was for people to entertain people that came in with their supernatural problems; It consisted of a desk and a table with chairs on the side. This was where Elizabeth was at the moment sorting out the place, making it look tidy and welcoming as possible, Thomas had gone out to run some errands. when she heard the bell from the door ring.Standing behind her, and just entering, there was a hunky Scotsman with a smile on his face ready to greet her “well, hello there.” he said with a completely understandable Peterhead accent. He had soft reddish-blond hair and a thick beard, and he was dressed as a countryman farm
Elizabeth and Thomas were on the way to the village of Crawley, on the west of Sussex, they travelled by carriage and had relative ease and comfort inside of it.Thomas would have loved to look out the window but there wasn't much to see as a fog had fallen over their route. In front of him, Elizabeth was reading some books, courtesy of Sister Margaret, and compared them to the notes she had taken from Alan Murray, she was lost in thought.“You look quite alluring while you are concentrating” the afro-brit said looking at her, she took her face out of a book and beamed him a smile.“That’s because the case we have is interesting” Elizabeth said while fixing her hair, leaving the book in her lap “it also helps that the company I keep is silent, reliable and visually appealing”.The atmosphere changed to playful and coquette.“Well, then I am glad that I can be silent, reliable and visually appealing…” he said chuckling “would being brooding help or break the spell?”“I don’t think bein
