I pulled away from his hold. “Let’s talk,” I said, my voice low but steady.

Zane paused and looked at me. “What’s wrong?”

“I need to tell you something. It’s very, very important Zane, and I've talked myself out of telling you so many times, but I really have to say it.”

Noting the grim expression on my face, he walked to the door and locked it shut. The door clicked, sealing us inside the room. I could still see the tension in his shoulders, the tightness in his jaw.

“What’s wrong?” he asked again. “Come here.”

His office was dimly lit, cool, and strangely impersonal. A sleek desk sat in the middle of the room, a wall of bookshelves behind it. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the city, its lights blinking softly through the glass.

I sank into the chair opposite his desk, fingers curling into the plush leather armrest as I searched for the right words, any words, to explain the truth without tearing him apart.

Zane sat down heavily behind his desk, elbows on the polished wo

We lapsed into silence again. I stared out the window at the blur of trees and fields, trying not to let the warmth of the sunlight or the quiet rhythm of the drive lull me into forgetting how complicated everything still was. “You’ve been quiet,” he said after a while. “I’ve had a lot on my mind.” “Wanna talk about it?” I turned to face him. “You want to talk?” He smirked. “I can be deep.” “Zane, you once called guacamole ‘green mush’ and refused to eat it because it looked too healthy.” “That’s not depth-related. That’s common sense.” I couldn’t help it the laughter that came out of my throat. It was a real and unexpected one. Zane grinned, and for a moment, it felt like we weren’t two people stitched together by broken promises. He leaned back in his seat. “I love that sound.” “What sound?” “You laughing. Not the fake kind you give at press events or when someone makes a dry joke to fill awkward air. I mean your laugh. This one. It’s beautiful.” I swallowed, hard. “You

“So you’re going to marry her despite knowing the truth?” I asked, softly now. “Despite everything? Despite… me?” I heard his footsteps behind me, then felt his presence. “I told you before,” he murmured, “this isn’t forever. Just… bear with me, Amara. Please.” I turned, eyes searching his. “Bear with you?” He stepped closer. “You think I’m not burning inside?” he said. “You think I don’t want to rip this whole charade down? I do. Every single day. But there’s a time for everything. And the time isn’t now.” “I don’t know if I can wait,” I whispered. “You can,” he said, gently touching my cheek. “Because you’re the only one who’s ever seen me clearly. And I need you to hold on a little longer.” A lump formed in my throat. “I don’t want to lose you again,” he added. “Not now. Not when I finally have you back in my world. Trust me, Amara. Please. As the man you fell for years ago, the man you loved… I’m begging you to trust me.” Tears blurred my vision. “I’m trying,” I said. He

“You knew,” I whispered. He nodded slowly. “I did.” My chest ached. “For how long?” His expression remained unreadable. “For a while.” My heart dropped. “How long is ‘a while,’ Zane?” He didn’t answer. I stood up abruptly. “You’ve been going along with it. With her. Playing the dutiful fiancé while she walks around carrying Julian’s child? And you didn’t say anything?” Zane leaned back in his chair, crossed his arms over his chest, exhaling like he’d been holding his breath for days. “What would’ve been the point, Amara? Telling you would’ve only made things worse.” “No,” I said, my voice cracking. “Lying made things worse. I thought you didn’t know. I thought you were being played and trapped. But you weren’t. You’re choosing this. You’re choosing her. You’re still going to marry her knowing the baby isn’t yours?” A shadow passed over his face. “It’s complicated, Amara.” “No. No, it’s not,” I said, my voice rising. “She lied to you. Manipulated you. Built this entire illusi

Sera opened her mouth to protest but caught the look on Zane’s face. She huffed, then left without a word. He waited until the door shut. Then he finally spoke. His voice was low. “You are slipping.” “It was a mistake…” “A mistake that cost us millions in potential sponsorship.” “It wasn’t intentional, Zane.” He stepped closer. His emotions were controlled, and somehow that made it worse. I would’ve preferred him to be volatile. This calmness has my uneasy. “You used to be better than this.” That... hurt. “I am better,” I shot back. “You call this better? Do you even understand what you’ve just done?” He took a deep breath, as if to calm himself. “I can’t do this now,” he muttered, brushing past me. “Fix it. Wade will oversee everything from now on.” He didn’t even wait to hear if I replied. The door slammed behind him. ## Hours later, I found him alone in his office. The door was slightly ajar, the muted light inside casting a pool of gold on the marbled hallway floor. E

Zane’s eyes flared. “You think I hate it?” I couldn’t answer. My skin was burning. We stood like that, both dangerously close, breathing the same shallow, electrified air. My heart thundered in my chest. His fingers twitched at his side like they wanted to do something he couldn’t allow. And when his hand brushed against mine as he reached for the folder again, I flinched. His eyes closed briefly. “Goddamn it.” He stepped back. “I can’t do this right now,” he said tightly. “Can’t do what?” I asked, my voice shaking. “This... war. This want.” He looked at me then, eyes glassy with restraint. “You’re in my blood, Amara. But right now, all I see is destruction and damage and ruin.” My mind had a thousand thoughts, none of which I could voice out. So I said nothing. He turned to leave, pausing at the door. I couldn’t stop myself. “Are you just going to leave? You won’t even hear me out. Fine. I messed up. I made a mistake, Zane. Everyone makes mistakes. I’ve apologized and I’m try
