JOSH POV “Goddess, I need some coffee,” Maddie says as we approach a large dining room filled with tables and a ton of people. As we enter, the room goes silent, and I gulp in fear as all eyes turn to us. I don’t know why. It’s not like I’m not used to large crowds of people watching my every move. But this just feels… different. Much more different than playing pro football in a stadium on national TV. I register that Maddie is squeezing my hand just a little firmer than before. I look down into her beautiful face and see her smile at me. “It’s okay. I’m right here with you.” I nod and return her smile. How could I not? “Coffee sounds great!” I agree, trying to shake the unease I am feeling. “I was promised food too, Alpha.” I remind her and I see her eyes dilate and flash brightly. She really does like it when I call her Alpha. “Yes, Josh. Food and coffee are on the agenda.” Maddie licks her lips, and I can hear the lust in her voice.

MADDIE POV I wanted to chase after Josh. So incredibly bad. Alas, alpha duties and pack politics require me to do my duty first. UGH! Goddess, I hate putting on the diplomatic face, but it’s part of the job. I pick up my phone and make the call to Jean-Claude’s alpha, Alpha Pierre. JOSH POV I keep thinking about everything that’s happened in the last three days as I spar with Holly. Physical exertions have always helped my brain function at it’s peak. I work out my troubles and problems while exercising or when I’m practicing with the team. While I am actively thinking about my workout or practice, the problem or situation that’s resolving is spinning in the back of my mind, like a radio station in the background. For me, it’s not distracting. Having a problem to work through actually helps me concentrate more on the physical activity and vice versa. It’s the ultimate Catch-22, but in a positive way. JOSH POV I am livid! I storm out of the packhouse front door and back down the steps. I pace at the bottom, not sure of what I want to do. Should I leave? Should I stay and let her explain? MADDIE POV Joshua and I wait, and not a minute later, I hear feet running toward us. Dr. Langford bursts into the room and I quickly point out where I can smell the bleeding originating from. The scent is distinctive and coming from her right kidney. The team immediately gets to work. I don’t know what all they are doing, but they have cut into Terrie trying to find and contain the bleed. The room reeks of sickness and blood now; I scrunch my nose up in distaste while I try to turn off my super smelling. Joshua is stunned in place while we watch the procedure from the room perimeter. MADDIE POV I wake up in the early morning, before the sun is up, like I always do. Today though, it’s different. The depressing daily realization that I am alone and have no one special to share my life with… doesn’t hit me. I open my eyes to see Joshua’s handsome face just inches from my own. I slept in Joshua’s strong embrace all night long. Despite being in a hospital bed, it was the best sleep I’ve had in over eighteen years. I feel Infinity purring contentedly in my head. MADDIE POV We look up and see Daddy standing at the door, holding a few snacks in his hands. He is glaring at Josh, and I immediately feel his Alpha aura fill up the small hospital room. His eyes are flashing between his blue and Zeus’ silver. His claws and teeth have elongated, and I can see fur trying to sprout out of his skin. Oh shit. Yep.
