MADDIE POV

“So, how many times has someone interrupted you during sexy time?” He asks me. I look up and see his face scrunching in distaste and I smirk to myself. He’s jealous and his reaction makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.

“None. I’ve never had sex while on pack territory.” I reply as we make our way up the steps of the pack house. I see his smile out of the corner of my eye and now I’m even more thankful that I’ve never had a relationship with any wolf or brought someone into my quarters for intimacy.

As we open the door, my heart sinks when I hear a voice I never wanted to hear again. “OH, THANK YOU GODDESS!” I’m quickly engulfed into an unwanted embrace of strong arms, making me drop Josh’s hand in the process. “I was so worried about you, my sweet mate.”

As I am trying to dislodge myself without hurting this male; I’m most worried about Josh’s feelings and his reaction than I am about injuring my unwanted guest. I glance at Josh

JOSH POV “Goddess, I need some coffee,” Maddie says as we approach a large dining room filled with tables and a ton of people. As we enter, the room goes silent, and I gulp in fear as all eyes turn to us. I don’t know why. It’s not like I’m not used to large crowds of people watching my every move. But this just feels… different. Much more different than playing pro football in a stadium on national TV. I register that Maddie is squeezing my hand just a little firmer than before. I look down into her beautiful face and see her smile at me. “It’s okay. I’m right here with you.” I nod and return her smile. How could I not? “Coffee sounds great!” I agree, trying to shake the unease I am feeling. “I was promised food too, Alpha.” I remind her and I see her eyes dilate and flash brightly. She really does like it when I call her Alpha. “Yes, Josh. Food and coffee are on the agenda.” Maddie licks her lips, and I can hear the lust in her voice.

MADDIE POV I wanted to chase after Josh. So incredibly bad. Alas, alpha duties and pack politics require me to do my duty first. UGH! Goddess, I hate putting on the diplomatic face, but it’s part of the job. I pick up my phone and make the call to Jean-Claude’s alpha, Alpha Pierre. Alpha Pierre is rightly upset with his beta for his actions and words. Even more so when I explain that he is no longer welcome on Blue Meadow territory, for any reason. Our packs have a long-standing alliance and while I am not demanding Jean-Claude be demoted or kicked out of his pack, I do warn that his behavior today will end that alliance if Josh walks away due to today’s events. Alpha Pierre is sincere in his apology and assures me that Jean-Claude will be punished for his transgressions. I thank him for his time, and I agree to his request of having dinner together so he and his mate, Nicolette, can meet Josh when and if, he takes on his role as Luna. I take a minu

JOSH POV I keep thinking about everything that’s happened in the last three days as I spar with Holly. Physical exertions have always helped my brain function at it’s peak. I work out my troubles and problems while exercising or when I’m practicing with the team. While I am actively thinking about my workout or practice, the problem or situation that’s resolving is spinning in the back of my mind, like a radio station in the background. For me, it’s not distracting. Having a problem to work through actually helps me concentrate more on the physical activity and vice versa. It’s the ultimate Catch-22, but in a positive way. When we are done sparring, we bid Holly a farewell and Bruno heartily pats me on the back, “You know, I knew you were in great shape and way above average physically, but I’m quite impressed with your performance today. You know… for a human.” “Umm, thanks?” It comes out like a question because I’m not too sure how to take that. Wa

JOSH POV I am livid! I storm out of the packhouse front door and back down the steps. I pace at the bottom, not sure of what I want to do. Should I leave? Should I stay and let her explain? That guy and Maddie obviously have a history together. Is he one of her lovers? The nurse said she sleeps with humans and Maddie did call that guy Beta, so apparently, he’s a wolf. But that doesn’t mean that they haven’t had a relationship. Is she promised to him? But after everything she said last night, am I forcing her to go back on her word to him because I’m bonded to her? Is it political suicide for her to choose me? And do I even want to be with her? I still don’t know if this is the life I want. It just feels like too much. My thoughts are a jumbled whirlwind in my mind. Not sure of where to go or what to do; I start walking away, not paying any attention to which direction I’m going. I don’t notice him until he bumps my shoulder. “Hey man. Where ya goin’?

MADDIE POV Joshua and I wait, and not a minute later, I hear feet running toward us. Dr. Langford bursts into the room and I quickly point out where I can smell the bleeding originating from. The scent is distinctive and coming from her right kidney. The team immediately gets to work. I don’t know what all they are doing, but they have cut into Terrie trying to find and contain the bleed. The room reeks of sickness and blood now; I scrunch my nose up in distaste while I try to turn off my super smelling. Joshua is stunned in place while we watch the procedure from the room perimeter. I’m not sure what he is thinking, but his heart rate has elevated, his breathing has increased, and a heavy scent of fear is seeping from him. I reach out and hold his hand, knowing this isn’t something he is probably used to, trying to offer him comfort. Despite the medical team’s best efforts, Terrie flatlines. The pain in my chest is horrendous as I feel her tether se

MADDIE POV I wake up in the early morning, before the sun is up, like I always do. Today though, it’s different. The depressing daily realization that I am alone and have no one special to share my life with… doesn’t hit me. I open my eyes to see Joshua’s handsome face just inches from my own. I slept in Joshua’s strong embrace all night long. Despite being in a hospital bed, it was the best sleep I’ve had in over eighteen years. I feel Infinity purring contentedly in my head. It’s nice to feel her again. Coming out of my unconsciousness yesterday was incredibly jarring, not feeling her there. Granted, the last time I could feel her presence, I lost control. Thinking I had lost Josh already and then feeling my pack members die, my control over her slipped away like water through my fingers. ~Good morning, Infinity. How are you feeling today?~ I ask her, hoping she has come back around to controllable. ~Morning. I’m sorry I lost control.

JOSH POV I close the door to Maddie’s bathroom and immediately head out to find someone for a clean gown and bedding. I’m not letting my mate get into a dirty bed after her shower. Aww, hell. I called her my mate again, didn’t I? Ugh. “Excuse me?” I call out to a woman at the end of the hallway. She turns and a slow smile spreads across her face when she sees me. She looks me up and down, appreciating what she’s seeing. Normally, I would lean into that, but now that I’ve met Maddie, I find it kind of weird and gross. Is this how women feel when they’re ogled by men? “Hi! I’ve never met you before. How can I help you, handsome?” She practically purrs at me. Holy cow! Are all female wolves this forward? First Poppy and now this one. Not to mention Maddie; I did watch her pick up two guys at once. “I need to get a clean gown and clean bedding for Alpha Madison. Who do I need to see in order to get those?” “I can grab

MADDIE POV We look up and see Daddy standing at the door, holding a few snacks in his hands. He is glaring at Josh, and I immediately feel his Alpha aura fill up the small hospital room. His eyes are flashing between his blue and Zeus’ silver. His claws and teeth have elongated, and I can see fur trying to sprout out of his skin. Oh shit. Yep. Daddy is pissed. “Daddy, Zeus, stand down!” I demand, hoping he will listen. “Madison…” Daddy begins to argue, his eyes never leaving Josh. I feel his aura getting stronger as he drops the food to the floor and steps menacingly toward Joshua, squishing the food as he goes. Out of my peripheral, I see Josh beginning to tremble and I know I need to put a stop to this before they hurt someone. I muster what little energy I have and force my own aura out. Hard and fast. “I SAID STAND DOWN!!” I command, while glaring at Daddy. How dare he threaten my mate!! His eyes cl
