JOSH POV Seemingly to appear out of nowhere, a lovely woman is walking toward us from the far distance. She is quite tall, with deep ebony hair and sparkly silver eyes that shine in an inhuman way. Maddie stands from my lap and gives a little curtsy when the woman is closer. “Mother Goddess.” She greets the woman formally, and I use the moment to take another look at the shifter world’s revered deity. Her beautiful gown is in a Grecian style and perfectly encapsulates her body. JOSH POV I wake up to a type of consciousness that feels like dream but also incredibly real and lifelike. I am aware of my body, and I pinch my arm to check if I’m asleep. It hurts so this could be real, but I don’t put a lot of stock into that hooey. I’ve been in pain in my nightmares before, even when it was self-inflicted. I don’t recognize where I am, but I really can’t see anything to know where I could be. I am surrounded by a soft iridescent, foggy light, and yet, the darkness is still all-consuming in the distance. The color of the atmosphere reminds me of those foreboding moments just before a hail storm or an impending tornado, when the sky is a dark reddish grey green, but also annoyingly bright. MADDIE POV I feel Infinity contentedly purring within my chest as I reluctantly wake from the best sleep I’ve had since I kicked Josh out of the pack and barred him from my life. I don’t want to open my eyes because I’m truly happy to sit here and be lazy with my mate. We’re in a slightly reclined position that most hospital beds seem to stay in, but this time I find it is the most comfortable position I’ve been in for a long while. I fight the urge and habit of opening my eyes as soon as I wake. JOSH POV Maddie freezes on my lap. She blinks at me, probably in shock from my proposal. For a moment she looks like the absolute cutest little owl with her wide, bright emerald eyes, then a huge smile blooms on her face. She barely gets “yes” out of her mouth before she starts kissing me. At first, it’s a sweet, loving, happy kiss; with her hands gently caressing my cheeks. But as the moments pass, the intensity amps up. She slides her hands to the back of my head and grips me firmer and she deepens the kiss. Her tongue dominates my mouth, barely letting either of us come up for air. My hands begin to roam, and I moan in desire when my hands meet bare skin. JOSH POV It takes Maddie a minute to pull her eyes from the hospital room doorway where her family just exited. When she does, she stares down at her clasped hands in her lap, not making eye contact with me. Her face is blank and I have no idea what she’s thinking. Although, I feel like I can feel her sadness and longing, which is so weird.
