Chapter 3

مؤلف: Daily Burst
Dad's footsteps fading down the stairs pulled me out of my memories, and the metallic taste of blood filled my mouth.

I stared at his retreating figure, my lips trembling.

"Dad…"

But I never managed to call out to him as my eyes slowly fluttered shut.

By the time I became aware of my surroundings again, Heather Reed, Mom's best friend, had already arrived with her medical staff in tow. They were gathered in the living room.

I first met Heather around the holidays last year. She had come to visit Mom with a fruit basket, and I was immediately sent out of the room.

I was afraid Mom might get upset if she saw me, so I secretly hid beneath the windowsill and listened to their conversation.

"I brought your medication. Take it the same way you always do."

Mom hesitated before asking, "Does it… have any side effects?"

"Real medication does. This stuff doesn't, so don't worry. Clarence won't find out—"

A burst of fireworks suddenly went off nearby, drowning out whatever Heather said next.

Nevertheless, the conversation left me with a question I could never shake.

What exactly was Mom taking? Was she really sick?

Mom suddenly burst into tears again. She collapsed into Dad's arms and curled against him, trembling all over. "I know what I did was wrong, but I didn't mean to do it. If she hadn't snuck around wearing that dress, I wouldn't have hit her… I'm a terrible person. I'm sorry!"

As she cried, she began slapping herself across the face.

Dad looked heartbroken. He pressed his forehead against hers and hurried to comfort her. "This is all Trina's fault! She deserved to be punished!"

Heather chimed in from beside them, "Exactly. If a kid misbehaves, there have to be consequences."

As she turned away, she glanced toward the floor and suddenly froze. "Why is there… blood over there?"

Everyone turned toward the corner.

There was indeed a dark stain on the floor, already beginning to dry. Smears stretched away from it and disappeared around the corner toward the stairs.

Dad's brows drew together, but before he could say anything, Preston spoke up.

"That's not blood. Mom's cat knocked over some ketchup. It just looks like blood."

The tension that had filled the room vanished almost instantly, and Dad's expression relaxed again.

All of a sudden, my phone started buzzing from somewhere near the corner.

Preston walked over, picked it up, and answered.

The voice of my homeroom teacher, Louise Farrow, came through the phone. "Hello, may I speak to Trina Jenner? I'm her homeroom teacher."

At that, Preston turned toward the stairs and yelled, "Trina, quit playing dead! Your teacher's looking for you!"

He waited several seconds.

When I didn't come downstairs, he scoffed impatiently. "She's pulling this crap again."

Dad snatched the phone from him and asked coldly, "What is it?"

"It's Trina's birthday today. Her classmates planned a birthday party for her…" Ms. Farrow explained.

"A birthday party? So that's why she's been causing trouble all day and insisting on wearing that dress! She upset my wife so badly that she's sick again. Trina's not available, and don't organize any more of this nonsense for her!"

Dad ended the call and tossed the phone aside without a second thought, like he had done countless times before.

My classmates, my friends, and even our neighbors had all been driven away like that.

Mom hated me, and she hated anyone who tried to get close to me.

Whenever someone came looking for me, she would chase them away with a broom. Then, as soon as Dad and Preston came home, she would run to them and complain that I had brought bad influences into the house just to upset her.

She would even show them the bruises she had pinched into her own skin.

Little by little, the way Dad and Preston looked at me grew colder.

Eventually, my friends stopped coming around altogether, and only then did Mom stop.

I grew up in that prison until there was barely any life left in me.

Come to think of it, maybe dying wasn't such a bad thing. At least I wouldn't have to spend every waking moment treading on thin ice.

Suddenly, someone pointed toward the staircase and cried, "Look! What's that over there?"

A thin streak of dark red liquid was slowly creeping down the stairs. Under the harsh white lights overhead, it looked deeply unsettling.

Just then, my phone started ringing again from where Dad had thrown it into the corner.

He walked over, picked it up, and barked into the phone, "I told you to stop calling—"

His voice abruptly cut off.

Then, he spoke again, sounding almost as if what he'd heard was too ridiculous to believe.

"What did you just say? My daughter has leukemia? How is that possible?"

By the end of that day, Mom and Heather remained in custody. The detective said the case against them was serious enough that they could spend the rest of their lives in prison.Meanwhile, Dad and Preston returned home looking completely defeated. Neither of them spoke the entire way back, and they moved through the house like robots.Dad sat alone in the living room and smoked through the night, crying between cigarettes as he tried to understand how everything had ended up this way.The detective's final words to him kept replaying in his head."Mrs. Jenner may have directly caused your daughter's death, but you and your son played a part in it, too. If you hadn't ignored what was happening to Trina, she could've lived at least another three months."Dad smoked one cigarette after another, his face twisted with regret.I'd seen him like this once before.12 years earlier, on the night Heather first claimed Mom had depression, Dad had also sat in the living room and smoked thr

The detective's words left everyone in stunned silence.Heather was the first to recover. She stared at him uneasily, asking, "Officer, what exactly do you mean by that?"The detective turned a cold gaze on her before addressing the officers beside him."We have new information that alters the nature of this case. Collect the evidence and bring everyone involved to the station for questioning."Upon hearing this, Mom shot to her feet in panic, her voice rising to a shriek. "What do you mean? We're not murderers! Why are you taking us in?"The detective gave her a humorless smile. "Whether you've committed a crime isn't for you to decide."Then, he turned to his officers. "Take them away!"Two officers immediately escorted Mom toward a patrol car outside. She struggled against them and screamed desperately, "Clarence! I'm scared! Help me! Please, help me!"But this time, Dad didn't even look at her. Instead, he walked straight to another patrol car and got inside.Mom stared a

By the time the police began examining the house, the blood on the floor had already dried. The lead detective pulled on a pair of gloves and picked up the metal decoration lying near the corner. He handed it to the medical examiner, who studied it carefully before saying, "Based on our initial findings, Trina Jenner was struck with a heavy object. "Given her advanced leukemia, the blood loss appears to have been fatal. At this point, we can't say whether someone deliberately hurt her or whether it was an accident."Mom immediately huddled against Dad, once again putting on that helpless, devastated expression."It was an accident… I was having an episode. I didn't mean to hit her. She was the one who set me off."She kept repeating herself while watching Dad expectantly, clearly waiting for him to defend her like he always did.But this time, Dad only sat on the couch with his head bowed. He didn't say a word. The words "advanced leukemia" and "fatal blood loss" seemed to be

Everyone turned toward the sound, only to realize that a team of doctors had entered the house, led by a doctor whose badge read "Dr. Morris"."Trina had advanced leukemia," Benedict Morris revealed. "You're her parents, yet instead of getting her treatment, you're standing here accusing her of pretending to be dead. What kind of parents do that?""Who are you?" Preston couldn't stand hearing anyone harping on Mom. He immediately stepped in front of her and glared at the doctor."I'm Dr. Benedict Morris, Trina's attending physician. I told her last month that she needed to be admitted to the hospital immediately. She said she wanted to take her test results home, show them to you, and talk it over with her family first."She was supposed to come back today, and I waited for her all morning. When she never showed up, I called your family, only to have you accuse me of being a scammer!"At those words, the color instantly drained from Dad's face, and his legs nearly gave out beneath

"Trina… what happened to you?"Dad's voice trembled, but I didn't go over to him. I stayed well behind the crowd and watched from a distance as he stumbled toward me, then dropped shakily to his knees beside my body.I couldn't tell what was written on his face. Was it grief, or was it fear?He reached out and slowly held a trembling hand beneath my nose.In the next second, he recoiled in horror, collapsed beside me, then stared desperately at Heather as she rushed over."Heather, save her… Please, save Trina!"His bloodstained fingers clamped around Heather's white coat tightly, refusing to let go. There was a faint catch in his voice as he spoke. For a brief moment, I almost let myself believe something ridiculous—Maybe Dad loved me. Maybe he actually cared about me.But I quickly gave a bitter laugh and shook my head, cutting off that foolish thought.No. There had only ever been one person Dad and Preston truly cared about, and it wasn't me.It was Mom.Heather checked

"Who the hell are you? What kind of scam are you trying to pull?" Dad snapped."Mr. Jenner, I'm not lying to you! Trina was supposed to come in for her follow-up appointment today. We've been waiting for her all morning, but she never showed up—""Yeah, right." Dad gave a derisive laugh and shook his head. "How much did she pay you to go along with this?"Without even looking up, he ordered Preston, "Go get my belt."Preston stood rooted to his spot, staring at him in confusion. "Why?""Why? Your sister got some stranger to call me and claim she has advanced leukemia! She's faking an illness because she's desperate for attention!"Maybe it was my imagination, but Mom's face went noticeably pale at those last words. Heather, standing behind her, seemed to stiffen as well."I'm teaching that ungrateful brat a lesson she'll never forget." Dad gritted his teeth and rolled up his sleeves, his face flushed with anger.I wanted to tell him not to bother because I was already dead. B
