LOGINChapter 3: My Fiancé’s Deadly Secret
AMARA
“Your future husband knows who killed your father.”
Vanessa’s words hung between us like a death sentence.
I stared at Adrian.
“Tell me she’s lying.”
He didn’t move.
“Adrian!”
“Amara, your father was a good man.”
My stomach dropped.
“Was?”
He looked away.
I laughed, but there was nothing funny about it.
“Seven years, Adrian. For seven years, I’ve believed my father died because his brakes failed. Are you telling me someone murdered him?”
Vanessa stepped forward.
“That’s exactly what happened.”
“Stay out of this!” Adrian snapped.
She smiled bitterly.
“Still giving orders? Some things never change.”
I pressed my hands against my temples.
“Both of you, stop!”
The room fell silent.
I looked at the photograph again. My father stood between Adrian and Vanessa, smiling as though they were old friends.
“How old were you when this was taken?” I asked Adrian.
“Twenty-seven.”
“And you knew my father?”
“Yes.”
My chest tightened.
“Before you met me?”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn’t you tell me?”
He took a step closer.
“Because I was afraid you’d never give me a chance.”
I stared at him.
“Did you know who I was when we met at the coffee shop?”
His silence was answer enough.
Oh, God.
The spilled cappuccino.
The replacement laptop.
The repeated visits.
Our entire love story.
“That wasn’t an accident, was it?”
“Amara—”
“ANSWER ME!”
“No,” he admitted.
I felt something inside me break.
“You deliberately approached me?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
He looked at Vanessa.
“Because someone was watching you.”
I sank onto the sofa.
My wedding dress hung near the bedroom doorway, protected beneath its white garment bag.
Just hours ago, I had been worried about flowers and seating arrangements.
Now I wondered whether my entire relationship had been a carefully constructed lie.
“What is The Web?” I whispered.
Vanessa sat opposite me.
“It’s an organization your father helped create.”
“What kind of organization?”
“Private intelligence. Financial investigations. Information that powerful people would pay millions to keep hidden.”
I looked at Adrian.
“Is that true?”
He nodded.
“Your father discovered that someone inside the organization was selling confidential information.”
“And they killed him?”
“We believe so.”
“We?”
Adrian exchanged a glance with Vanessa.
I noticed it.
That silent understanding.
The kind shared by people with a history.
“How exactly do you two know each other?” I demanded.
Vanessa smiled sadly.
“Adrian and I were engaged.”
The air left my lungs.
I turned toward him.
“Engaged?”
“It was years ago,” he said quickly.
“Before she died?”
“Amara, please—”
I stood.
“Don’t touch me!”
He froze.
I looked at Vanessa.
“And you let me mourn you? You let your mother bury an empty coffin?”
Tears filled her eyes.
“I had no choice.”
“Everyone has a choice!”
“Not when someone threatens to kill your family.”
Her voice cracked.
For a moment, I saw the girl who used to cry whenever we argued.
But sympathy was a luxury I couldn’t afford.
“Why come back now?”
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“Because someone inside The Web has started killing again.”
A chill traveled down my spine.
“Who?”
Before she could answer, Adrian’s phone rang.
He glanced at the screen.
His face changed.
“What’s wrong?” I asked.
He answered without speaking.
A man’s voice came through.
“Mr. Cole, we have a problem.”
Adrian walked toward the window.
“What happened?”
“The security guard who let Miss Reed upstairs has been found unconscious.”
Vanessa stood immediately.
“Where?”
“In the parking garage.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“Lock down the building.”
He ended the call.
Then he turned toward us.
“We need to leave. Now.”
I refused to move.
“I’m not going anywhere until somebody tells me the truth.”
Adrian approached slowly.
“Amara, I know you hate me right now.”
“You don’t know anything about how I feel.”
“Then hate me tomorrow. Tonight, let me keep you alive.”
His voice broke on the last word.
I looked into his eyes.
The same eyes I had fallen in love with.
The same eyes that had watched me cry over my father’s death without revealing that he knew him.
“Did you ever love me?” I whispered.
Adrian looked wounded.
“Every second.”
“Even when you were lying?”
“Especially then.”
A tear slipped down my cheek.
He reached up, stopping just short of touching my face.
“I approached you because I was asked to protect you. But falling in love with you was never part of the plan.”
My heart twisted painfully.
For one terrible moment, I wanted to believe him.
Then Vanessa’s phone buzzed.
She read the message.
Her face drained of color.
“What?” Adrian demanded.
Vanessa turned the screen toward him.
I stepped closer.
It was a photograph of our wedding venue.
Taken minutes ago.
Across the image, someone had written:
THE BRIDE WILL NOT REACH THE ALTAR.
Below it was a second message.
ADRIAN COLE HAS UNTIL SUNRISE TO RETURN WHAT HE STOLE.
I looked at my fiancé.
“What did you steal?”
Adrian’s expression became unreadable.
Then he reached into his jacket and removed a small silver key.
Vanessa gasped.
“You still have it?”
He ignored her.
Instead, he placed the key in my palm and closed my fingers around it.
“Your father gave me this before he died.”
My breath caught.
“What does it open?”
Adrian leaned close enough that only I could hear him.
“The evidence that could destroy The Web.”
I looked down at the key.
Then he whispered something that made my blood run cold.
“And Amara, if anything happens to me, don’t trust Vanessa.”
Behind him, Vanessa smiled.
As though she’d heard every word.
Chapter 10: The Brother I Once LovedAMARA“Son, aren’t you going to introduce me to your sister?”The room went silent.I looked at Ethan. Then at the Chairman.“No.”The word escaped my lips before I could stop it.“No, that’s impossible.”The Chairman smiled.“Denial. Your mother’s favorite defense.”“Shut up!” Evelyn screamed.I had never heard my mother speak like that.Ethan stood motionless beside me.“You’re lying,” he said. The Chairman laughed.“Am I, Nathaniel?”Ethan’s face drained of color.Nathaniel?I stepped backward.“Who is Nathaniel?”The Chairman pointed at Ethan.“Your precious Ethan Blackwood. Another borrowed name.”My knees weakened. Not again.First Adrian. Now Ethan. Was there a single person in my life whose identity was real?“Ethan?” I whispered. He couldn’t meet my eyes.“Amara, please listen.”“Are you his son?”A terrible silence followed.“I was raised as his son.”My chest tightened.“That’s not what I asked.”“I don’t know if we’re related.”The Chai
Chapter 9: The Mother Who Knew EverythingAMARA“My mother is missing?”I stared at Ethan, waiting for him to laugh. To tell me there had been a misunderstanding. He didn’t.“Her driver found her car abandoned two streets from the hotel.”My heart began pounding.“Was there blood?”“No.”“Her handbag? Her phone?”“Both were inside.”I turned toward Gabriel.“You knew this would happen.”“Amara—”“YOU KNEW!”He reached for me, but I pushed his hand away.“First my father. Now my mother. How many people have to disappear before you tell me the truth?”His face twisted with pain.“I would never hurt your family.”“You killed a man!”“A man who murdered your father!”“And I’m supposed to believe you?”Silence. Then Vanessa spoke.“Your mother isn’t as innocent as you think.”I turned slowly.“What did you say?”She folded her arms.“Ask her what she did the night your father died.”I stepped toward her.“If anything happens to my mother, Vanessa, I swear—”“Threatening me won’t change wha
Chapter 8: The Man Behind the NameAMARA“Gabriel.”I repeated the name slowly.Adrian stood before me, his face drained of color.“That’s my real name,” he whispered.I stared at him.“Your real name?”He nodded.“Gabriel Alexander.”A bitter laugh escaped my lips.“Wonderful. I’ve been sleeping beside a man whose name I don’t even know.”“Amara, please—”“Who is Adrian Cole?”He looked away.“Someone who died twelve years ago.”My stomach dropped. Before I could respond, another gunshot echoed from the ballroom.Ethan grabbed my arm.“We need to move. Now!”Vanessa rushed toward the door, but Adrian blocked her.“Nobody leaves until we know who’s downstairs.”“You’re not in charge anymore, Gabriel,” she snapped. The name sounded strange coming from her lips.Familiar.Almost intimate.I looked between them.“How long have you known his real identity?”Vanessa smiled.“Long enough to know he isn’t the man you think he is.”⸻Ethan led us through a private corridor behind the bridal s
Chapter 7: The Bride Who Stole My WeddingAMARATHE WEDDING WILL GO ON. WITH OR WITHOUT YOU.I stared at Vanessa’s message until the words blurred. My wedding dress. My engagement ring.My fiancé.She had taken everything.“Ethan, take me to the wedding venue.”He looked up from his laptop.“Absolutely not.”I grabbed my handbag.“Then give me your car keys.”“Amara, Vanessa is setting a trap.”“She’s wearing my wedding dress!”“And that’s exactly why she wants you there.”I turned toward him.“Six years ago, you disappeared without giving me a choice. Don’t make that mistake again.”His expression changed. For a moment, I regretted my words. Then he picked up his keys.“Fine. But I’m coming with you.”The drive to the Grand Monarch Hotel felt endless. My phone kept vibrating.Messages from bridesmaids.Missed calls from my mother.Photographs of flowers, champagne, and smiling guests.Nobody knew my wedding had become a nightmare. Then Jasmine called.“Amara! Where are you?”“I’m on
Chapter 6: The Woman With My IdentityAMARA“Biological match confirmed.”I read the words again. And again. On Ethan’s security monitor, Vanessa stood inside an underground vault wearing a hospital bracelet bearing my name.“That’s impossible,” I whispered.Ethan was already typing furiously.“She’s using your identity to access the system.”“But you said it needed my biological sample.”“It does.”“Then how is she doing it?”He stopped typing. That frightened me more than anything.“Ethan?”He looked at me.“There’s something about your father’s research I haven’t told you.”I laughed bitterly.“Of course there is. Apparently, everyone in my life has a secret.”“Amara, listen—”“No. You listen.”I stepped closer.“I’ve been lied to by my fiancé, manipulated by my supposedly dead best friend, and dragged into a conspiracy I never knew existed.”My voice trembled.“But I’m done being the woman everyone thinks they can control.”Ethan stared at me.Then, unexpectedly, he smiled.“What?
Chapter 5: The Secret in My BloodAMARA“Your father wasn’t protecting you from The Web. He was protecting The Web from you.”I stared at Ethan.“That doesn’t make any sense.”“It will.”“Then explain it!”He tightened his grip on the steering wheel.“Your father left something behind, Amara. Something only you can access.”I looked down at the silver key Adrian had given me.“Is this what everyone wants?”Ethan glanced at it.His expression changed.“Where did you get that?”“Adrian.”He cursed under his breath.“Of course he gave it to you.”“What does it open?”“A safe-deposit box.”“Where?”“Your father’s old bank.”I turned toward him.“Then take me there.”“Not tonight.”“Ethan!”“Amara, someone just tried to shoot you. You’re exhausted, and the entire city is looking for us.”I folded my arms.“Six years apart, and you’re still telling me what to do.”His lips curved slightly.“And you’re still refusing to listen.”For one brief moment, we were twenty-two again. Before the hear
