“Fingerprint not recognized.”

The red light flashed again.

I pressed my thumb to the lock one more time. Nothing changed.

Adrian had bought the Tribeca penthouse a month ago. It was supposed to be our home after the wedding. A few of his friends had come over early to help set up for the housewarming party the next night.

Yet I couldn’t even open the door.

Luca laughed beside me.

“Claire, stop trying. Mia’s fingerprint was added yesterday.”

A few of Adrian’s oldest friends stood in the hallway with drinks in their hands, all of them watching me.

“Adrian made a bet with us,” Luca said. “He said you’d lose it when you found out.”

Someone added, “But he also said you’ve finally learned to give him some space. If you don’t make a scene tonight, he’ll add your fingerprint tomorrow and the wedding stays on schedule.”

I looked through the open door.

Adrian was leaning against the bar with a glass of whiskey, close enough to hear every word. He did nothing to stop them.

Mia stood nearby in a spare shirt from the penthouse closet.

When she noticed me looking, she smiled.

“I spilled wine on my blouse while we were setting up. Adrian told me to find something clean to wear.”

Three days ago, I would already have been arguing with him.

Now I only took my hand away from the lock.

“Don’t bother.”

Adrian finally walked over.

“Don’t bother with what?”

“Adding my fingerprint.”

I slipped my bag over my shoulder.

“You can keep going.”

Luca grinned. “You’re leaving already? If you walk away without making a scene, Adrian wins.”

I stopped.

“What exactly did you bet on?”

“I said you’d blow up when you realized Mia had access before you did. Adrian said you wouldn’t. He thinks you’ve finally learned.”

So that was why everyone had been watching me.

They were waiting for my reaction.

I looked at Adrian. He seemed perfectly calm, as though turning our relationship into entertainment for his friends was harmless.

“Congratulations, then.”

I headed for the elevator.

Adrian caught up and closed a hand around my wrist.

“Claire, what are you doing?”

“Leaving.”

“I told you I’ll add your fingerprint tomorrow.” His voice lowered. “Everyone is here tonight. Don’t make me chase you just because you want attention.”

I pulled my wrist free.

“There’s no need.”

His expression hardened.

“If you get into that elevator, don’t start using the wedding to threaten me again.”

He knew exactly where to press.

“You’ve wanted to marry me for years.”

That used to work.

Five years ago, before Adrian became Don of the Moretti family, we had lived in a cramped apartment together. One winter night at Coney Island, he spent twenty dollars winning me a cheap brown teddy bear, tucked my freezing hands inside his coat, and promised that one day he would give me a home no one could push me out of.

I had believed him.

Now that home was behind me.

Mia had access to it before I did.

I met Adrian’s eyes.

“Fine.”

His brow tightened. “What?”

“We won’t get married.”

The elevator doors began to close.

Luca stepped forward.

“Adrian, should we—”

“Let her go.”

Adrian gave a cold laugh.

“Where is she going to go? She’ll call me before midnight.”

The doors closed.

I didn’t look back.

By the time I returned to the apartment we had shared for five years, it was dark.

I pulled out a black garbage bag and began clearing the room. Matching coffee mugs, framed photos, souvenirs from trips. One by one, they disappeared into the bag.

My phone lit up.

Claire, enough.

Another message followed.

I gave you a way out tonight. Don’t push me until I lose patience.

I read both messages and deleted his number without replying.

Adrian had spent months teaching me that loving him meant swallowing every hurt, doubting my own instincts, and staying quiet whenever he crossed a line.

I had finally understood that no matter how much he loved me, he wanted my obedience more than he wanted my happiness. So I chose to leave before there was nothing left of me except the woman he had trained me to become.

I had stopped fighting because I was done waiting for him to change.

The weather in San Francisco was beautiful on our wedding day.The ceremony was held on the top-floor terrace of a hotel overlooking the bay. White flowers lined the aisle, and the breeze coming off the water lifted the edge of my veil.My mother walked with me to the entrance.Julian was already waiting at the other end. From the moment I appeared, he never looked away. When I reached him, he took my hand. His palm was warm.Julian kept his vows simple.“Claire, I will never make you guess where you stand with me.”“If you feel uncertain, ask me. If I hurt you, tell me.”His fingers tightened gently around mine.“You will never have to prove that you deserve to be loved by seeing how much you can endure.”For a moment, the terrace went quiet. My eyes burned.Adrian had spent years convincing himself there were too many things about me that needed to change.Ask less.Care less.Need less.Every time I told him something hurt, he pushed the boundary a little further until I finally lea

Another six months passed.A week before the wedding, I was at the designer’s studio for my final dress fitting. The designer was adjusting the last layer of my veil when my phone rang.Luca.I stared at the name for a few seconds before answering.“Claire.”He sounded tense.“Adrian knows you’re getting married.”I looked at myself in the mirror.“Oh.”Luca clearly hadn’t expected that to be my only reaction.“Someone shared the news about you and Julian last night. Adrian saw it and completely lost it.”So that was how he found out.Julian’s family had announced the wedding a few days earlier. It had quickly been picked up by a San Francisco society column and a few design-industry accounts.Luca continued.“He went back to the Tribeca penthouse and destroyed half the living room. Almost everything Mia helped choose is gone.”“He’s sitting by the front door now.”Luca paused.“Right in front of that fingerprint lock.”I said nothing.“Claire, he keeps saying that if he’d just added y

Three months later, rain poured over San Francisco. The design summit had just ended, and I was leaving the hotel with several colleagues when a man suddenly came through the rain toward me.Security stopped him before he reached the steps.I stopped walking. It was Adrian. His black coat was soaked through, his dark hair plastered across his forehead. He looked nothing like the Moretti Don I remembered, the man who was always composed and always in control.“Claire.”His voice was rough.I didn’t move.Adrian stared at me for a long moment. Then he pulled free of the security guard and crossed the remaining distance. The next second, he dropped to his knees.Everyone around us went quiet.“I was wrong.”Rain ran down his face.“Mia doesn’t work for Moretti anymore. Whatever she did, the lawyers are handling it.”“I changed the locks at the Tribeca penthouse too.”His eyes were already red when he looked up at me.“Claire, come home with me.”“You can look through my phone whenever you

A few weeks later, the head of finance at Moretti Properties hurried into Adrian’s office.“There’s a problem with one of the operating accounts.”Adrian looked up.“How much?”“About one point eight million.”The money had been set aside for the next round of payments to contractors and suppliers on one of their hotel projects.“Where did it go?”The man’s expression tightened.“Mia initiated the transfers last night using her administrative access. By the time the bank flagged them, the money had already been split across several outside accounts.”Adrian picked up his phone and called her.Straight to voicemail. He sent people to her apartment. It had already been cleared out.Clothes, documents, luggage. Everything was gone.Adrian stared at the bank records on his desk, his expression turning cold.He had always known Mia enjoyed the lifestyle that came with working closely with the Moretti family. He had never expected her to steal from the company. The bank froze the remaining t

San Francisco, eight in the morning.Morning light poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the conference room as I clicked to the final page of my presentation.“That’s my overall revision for the hotel’s public spaces.”“Thank you.”The room stayed quiet for two seconds before applause followed. The man at the head of the table closed the file in front of him.Julian Hayes.Founder and design director of the international architecture firm, and the man who had personally recruited me from New York.“Very good.”His attention returned to the screen.“Especially the lobby circulation. You improved the visual impact without sacrificing how people actually move through the space.”I set down the remote.“Thank you.”Julian handed the file to the project manager beside him.“We’ll move forward with Claire’s version.”No one questioned me because I was new.No one took my work, polished it under someone else’s name, or expected me to spend my nights fixing problems I would never rec

Adrian refused to believe it.I had loved him for five years. If he came home an hour late, I used to ask where he had been. Sometimes, when he deliberately ignored her messages, she would stay awake until the middle of the night waiting for him.How could someone like that disappear so completely? He immediately had his men find out where I had gone.It took them nearly an hour to confirm that I had left New York from JFK that afternoon.Less than an hour later, his men confirmed that I had boarded a flight to San Francisco that afternoon. The four boxes from the apartment had been shipped there too.The four boxes had been shipped there too.I hadn’t left for a few days to cool off.I had moved away.He drove straight to the architecture and design firm where I used to work.It was almost ten at night, and only a few people were still in the office. One of the partners knew Adrian and looked surprised to see him.“Where’s Claire?”The man studied him for a moment.“She left.”“I know
