Chapter 7

Author: Orange
Dante had just escorted Isobel to the car when he heard the last few words I said.

Sensing that he hadn't heard the first half of my sentence, I brushed him off by saying, "My friend is leaving soon."

Dante nodded without asking any further.

Four days before my departure, Dante brought back the photos from his photoshoot with Isobel. He got on a video call with her. Holding his phone up with one hand, he used his other to show her the photo album. His gaze was tender as he said, "The photos from our wedding photoshoots are ready, Isobel. Everyone said we looked great in them."

Right then, I came out of the kitchen after getting myself a glass of water.

Dante's eyes flashed with awkwardness. He looked at me as though he wanted to say something. I glanced at the photos before forcing out a smile. "The photos do look pretty good."

I'd spent a fortune on the best photographer in town just so I could capture the happiest moment of bliss I would share with Dante. I'd envisioned the photos to be filled with our love. I anticipated that Dante, the man I loved the most in the world, would look very handsome in his suit.

The only difference now was that the bride in these photos wasn't me.

Dante was taken aback.

It suddenly occurred to him that it'd been ages since I last initiated a conversation with him. Even during his week-long vacation with Isobel, I didn't send him a single message. He wasn't used to this.

Although Isobel kept yapping away on the video call, Dante's attention was on me. A foreboding feeling had suddenly emerged in his heart, but he tried to stamp it out.

Two days before it was time for me to leave, I went to the hospital to get some medical supplies, just in case. Unexpectedly, I ran into Dante and Isobel, who had just completed a prenatal examination.

Dante's eyes flashed in panic, but just as he was about to speak, Isobel beat him to it.

She came up to me, grabbed my hand, and choked out, "Nina, I know you haven't given your permission for Dante and me to have a baby, but I couldn't wait any longer. My doctor says I only have a year left to live, and I really want to witness the birth of my baby. But once the baby is born, I'll leave Dante right away. I won't come between the two of you."

I hadn't even said anything when Dante held Isobel affectionately and said, "Don't be like this. You're in frail health."

Then, he turned to me with a complicated expression and said, "Don't worry. This won't affect our wedding."

I glanced at the two of them before withdrawing my gaze and saying, "Got it."

Once I finished speaking, I walked off. It was almost time for me to leave, and I still needed to pack some things.

The two of them didn't expect me to remain that calm. Dante was especially taken aback by it. He had a look of mixed emotions as he watched me leave. I'd recently spent weeks arguing with him over the issue of his wanting to have a child with Isobel. Yet, after finding out that Isobel was pregnant, I showed no reaction at all.

For some reason, Dante felt a sense of apprehension. It was as if something had changed right under his nose without him noticing.

I'd just reached the top of the stairs when Isobel suddenly caught up to me and yanked hard on my sleeve. Dante was still some distance away, so Isobel finally revealed her true colors to me.

"Nina, how does it feel to watch while your fiance has a baby with another woman?"

Not wanting to argue with her, I shook her off so that I could leave. However, as soon as I tried to do that, she lost her balance and started leaning backward. Out of sheer instinct, I grabbed her hand and stopped her from falling.

Before I could let go, I heard Dante's infuriated roar coming from behind me. "What are you doing?"

Upon seeing Dante, Isobel immediately fixed a hurt expression on her face. Making her eyes turn red, she clutched her abdomen and said, "Dante, I just wanted to thank Nina for being so accepting. I didn't expect her to…"

Once Dante heard what Isobel said, his expression turned stormy.

"Nina! I never thought you'd do such a thing! Apologize to Isobel at once!"

I thought I was going to get stabbed, but the pain I'd expected never came. I whipped my head up and realized that Dante had shielded me from the attack. He was clutching his abdomen with one hand, but it was bleeding profusely anyway.Swaying, he ended up crashing on top of me."Dante!"I quickly tried to keep him steady as I called for an ambulance. The only thing I could think of was to stop his bleeding at once."Have you lost your mind?" I cried out as I pressed down against his wound. My fingers were covered in his blood.Dante was already losing consciousness. His face was colorless, but he struggled to keep his eyes open and look at me. Before I had a chance to even say anything, Dante's emotions got the better of him."I can explain everything!" he choked out as his eyes reddened. "At the time, I thought Isobel was the one who saved me. I never had any feelings for her. It was only after you'd left that I found out it was you who saved me that night five years ago. I've been mistaken all along, Nina…"Dante's eyes were filled with regret, but they also held a flicker of hope. He assumed that by revealing the truth, I would be able to forgive him, but he was wrong.I'd saved him that night. I was the one who tended to his injuries and stopped his bleeding, but I never brought it up. It was an incident from the past that we both chose not to dwell on.However, Dante assumed that someone else had saved him, and that mistake cost him our entire relationship."I didn't let Isobel give birth to that baby. I know the truth now, Nina. So can we go back to the way things were between us?" Dante asked.Immediately, I sho

I spent all those years trying to win Dante over, but he remained as unmoved as a block of ice. His heart was as cold as a rock. However, when Isobel showed up, I realized that he wasn't truly an emotionless person. He simply didn't love me.Two years ago, I canceled our wedding and removed myself from the equation so that Dante and Isobel could be together. Yet, he had broken things off with Isobel and was now behaving as though he was still deeply in love with me."Excuse me, but Tim is my fiance," I coolly declared. "We're getting married on the 18th, which is in ten days."Dante's face turned ashen. His eyes reddened with tears. It was as if he couldn't accept that I was actually going to marry someone else.I was in no mood to get entangled with him. Thus, I decided to leave with everyone and have the party elsewhere. As I walked past him, he grabbed me, but I yanked my hand away without hesitation. Taking Tim's hand, I left the restaurant while Dante remained rooted to the sp

The research project had been completed, and the hospital gave me two months off, so I decided to return to Manhorne. There was something I needed to finish off here—a proper farewell."Nina! We're going to be late if we don't hurry!" Tim said before taking my hand and pulling me into a jog.Linda said that she wanted to throw me a welcome-back party. As it had been two years since I last saw my friends, I agreed. As we hurried up the building where the restaurant was, I thought I spotted a familiar silhouette, but I didn't give it much thought. As soon as the door to the private dining room at the restaurant flew open, confetti burst into the air."I didn't hear a single word from you for two whole years! Dante crashed into an armchair, his eyes clouded red. He was grasping a report he had just received. He said, "Isobel, you're not the one who saved me five years ago."Isobel stiffened, but she kept a gentle smile on her face as she tried to take his arm and say, "Why are you saying this all of a sudden, Dante? Are you tired—"She hadn't finished speaking before Dante flung her off him and snarled, "Drop the act! I reviewed the surveillance footage from the alley at the time. It was Nina who saved me. She was the one who stayed with me when I was on the verge of death!"All the color drained from Isobel's face.At the time, she'd come across Dante at the hospital by sheer coincidence. He'd just woken up and immediately assumed she saved him. She should've clarified things right away.
