Chapter 1

작가: Unknown Heart
My twin sister Elena’s husband died for the family.

On the day Elena became a widow, the Moretti family decided over just fifteen minutes that she would again marry for the family’s sake.

The man Elena was to marry this time was Nicola, the twin brother of my husband, Matteo.

I heard that he had been doing dangerous work for his family and had only recently returned to the country.

The marriage was still just a verbal agreement. Elena had not yet met Nicola.

I was sitting on the couch in the bedroom reading a book when I learned about this news. Matteo was standing right behind me.

After a long silence, he asked, “Will... Elena agree to this arranged marriage?”

I replied without looking at him, “Yes.”

He then asked, “So, are you going to see her?”

I nodded. “Yes, I’ll see her later.”

Upon hearing my words, Matteo seemed a little disappointed. However, in the next second, he looked calm again.

That night, Matteo tossed and turned. He was unable to sleep. I also stayed awake the entire night.

In truth, my marriage with Matteo was simply fate’s cruel joke.

When my family received the marriage announcement from the Castellano family, they were overjoyed. They even double-checked that I was the one being asked to marry Matteo.

After all, my sister Elena was the pride of the Moretti family.

She was radiant, dignified, and capable in everything she did. I, on the other hand, was just her quiet and dull shadow.

Our wedding took place in June.

It was a bright and sunny day.

However, just as I walked down the aisle toward Matteo, I saw the light in his eyes dim a little.

Since members of both families were present, he went through the wedding with me like he was just going through a procedure.

We both knew very well that this was a family alliance. Unless it was absolutely necessary, we were not allowed to call it off.

Still, the way Matteo looked at me that day planted a seed of doubt in my heart.

As for me, even though I did not marry the person I truly liked, I had made peace with it.

Perhaps it was because I had never been able to get anything easily since I was a child. I was already used to it.

I even felt a little bit fortunate.

After all, Matteo looked almost identical to the person I had secretly been in love with.

Elena and I were fraternal twins. People could tell us apart at a single glance.

I remembered our first anniversary family banquet. I was stuck making the rounds with Matteo.

I hit a wall of exhaustion and ducked into the restroom.

When I came out, I took a different way back.

I stopped behind a marble pillar because I overheard someone say Matteo’s name.

“Matteo, I still don’t get it. You never make mistakes in missions. You can go seventy-two hours without sleep and still tell who the enemy is. How did you even mix up Elena and her sister? How did you screw up so badly at the wedding that you married the wrong woman?”

I clenched the hem of my dress when I heard that.

There was silence for a moment.

Then, I heard Matteo say, “Who doesn’t have regrets in life? Anyway, she and I are already married. We’ll just keep going on with our lives.”

He sounded indifferent, as if he were talking about something unimportant.

Only then did it dawn on me. I finally understood why he had looked at me that way at our wedding.

He was actually in love with Elena. I was never the one he truly wanted to marry.

Early the next morning, I heard him talking to Nicola on the phone.

After he hung up, he came back to the bedroom. I closed my eyes and pretended to be asleep.

He sat by my bed and gently stroked my hair.

He only treated me so gently when I was asleep. Normally, he acted very cold toward me.

He never mistreated me, but he never looked at me with love.

He looked at me like I was a stand-in. I knew that feeling all too well.

I knew he loved Elena. The only time I even vaguely looked like her was when I stayed completely still.

“Lina, I’m sorry. I really love her that much. The moment I laid eyes on her, I couldn’t forget her. I just need to see her one time. One week is all I’m asking for. Then, I’ll come back, and our marriage will go right back to normal.”

Of course, he had to seize the opportunity that was placed in front of him. Otherwise, he would never forgive himself for the rest of his life.

I understood that. So, I did not blame him.

  • The Week He Pretended To Be The Husband   Chapter 10

In the third year of my separation from Matteo, Nicola performed several key operations overseas. He rendered great service to the family. After Don Castellanov passed away, Nicola became the youngest Don in the family’s history.Matteo and I also got divorced by then. The family was unhappy about it, but they did not pursue the matter further. Nicola was already the new Don of the Castellano family after all.Later, Elena married the eldest son of another family in Sicellia. Rumor had it that she was doing fairly well.On the day we finalized the divorce, the weather was clear.I saw Nicola across the street. He took off his sunglasses and waved at me. I ran to him and threw myself into his arms. He held me for a while. Then, he took my hand.“Come on, let’s go buy new wedding rings.”The sun shone on our faces. Two people who had been through so much had finally found each other.I looked down at his hand that was holding mine. I rubbed my fingertip against the shallow sc

Nicola hit much harder than Matteo did.Matteo suffered two cracked ribs, multiple contusions, soft tissue injuries, and a mild concussion. He was sent to the family’s private hospital and stayed there for two days before he finally woke up.This incident alarmed both families’ Dons.In the end, both of them were punished equally.Nicola was sent to Sicellia for a month to cool off. Matteo was disciplined by the council. The head nurse reported to me that Matteo’s vital signs had returned to normal. He could be discharged after resting for a period of time. However, he refused to speak.I stood outside his hospital room. After a long silence, I pushed open the door.Matteo lay on the hospital bed with an IV line still threaded into the back of his hand. His breathing was steady.I pulled a chair over and sat down beside the bed. I noticed that he had blinked.“Matteo, wake up and face reality. Running away isn’t going to fix anything.”After a few seconds, he slowly opened h

When Matteo pushed open the master bedroom door, he saw Nicola and me sleeping in each other’s arms. That made him furious. He did not care that we were still asleep, or that Nicola was his older brother. He strode to the bed, grabbed Nicola by the collar, and dragged him out from under the covers. Before Nicola could react, Matteo punched him in the face. Nicola’s back hit the wardrobe. A dull, heavy thud echoed through the room.I jolted awake instantly. I shouted for Matteo to stop.Yet, Matteo kept throwing punches one after another like a madman.Nicola did not fight back.He slid down the wardrobe and sat on the floor. Blood seeped from the corner of his mouth. When Matteo finally stopped, Nicola looked at him as he wiped the corner of his mouth with the back of his hand. Then, he smiled, looking completely unbothered.“Weren’t you the one who begged me to pretend to be you, my dear brother?”Matteo grabbed Nicola by the collar and yanked him up from the floor. He t

[Lina’s perspective.]That same night, after Nicola got ready for bed, he lifted the blanket and lay down beside me.Then, he wrapped his arm around my waist and pulled me into his embrace. He rested his chin on top of my head. His breath wafted through my hair.He held me gently and let out a contented sigh. “Honey, it feels so good to hold you.”I blushed from his embrace, and my heart pounded rapidly.I never felt that way with Matteo before. That must be what natural chemistry felt like.I turned to bury my face in his chest and wrapped my arms around his waist.“Babe, you smell really nice,” I said.I never thought I would meet Number 23 again, let alone get to call him “Babe.”I tried hard to hold back my tears.Nicola then called out my name softly in the dark, “Lina.”Then, he paused for a long time.“Do you like me like this?”I did not hesitate.“Yes, I do.”He chuckled, then said, “Then... what if this version of me disappears tomorrow? Would you be sad?”

[Matteo’s perspective.]After hanging up, I got the sense that I should not have asked Nicola to pretend to be me.I followed Elena home after dinner.Elena took a bottle of whiskey from the liquor cabinet and poured herself a glass. Then, as if she suddenly remembered that someone else was in the house, she raised the bottle toward me.“Want a drink?” she said.I said yes.Just when I thought we could finally drink and talk, Elena drank by herself without paying me any attention.I was about to speak when she turned and walked to the couch. She sat down and started scrolling through her phone. She clearly had no intention of looking at me.After Elena took several phone calls, she noticed that I was still standing there. She raised an eyebrow and said, “Have a seat. Make yourself at home.”I sat down on the couch and tried to get closer to her.Every time I brought up personal things in our lives, the conversation would always end with family business. Then, the topic woul

I held his hand and walked into the restaurant with him.The waiter took us up to the third floor.Nicola did not reserve a private room for us. Our seats were on the small terrace that was only open to premium members.Beyond the French windows, the night skyline and the distant harbor lights stretched into view. When we were seated, I heard a familiar voice coming from the stairwell.“Oh? Lina. You two are here too?”It was Elena. She was wearing a red dress today. She looked amazing in it. Every move she made was elegant. She walked over and sat down next to me.Then, she said to Nicola, who was sitting across from me, “Since we happened to run into each other like this, why don’t you pick up the tab, Nicola?”After saying that, she nudged me with her leg under the table.I felt a little embarrassed and gave an awkward smile.Nicola clearly had not expected this situation either.I was at a loss for words. Then, I saw Matteo walking over slowly. He was frowning, and his
