Chapter 2

Author: Aetheria
"Elara, why? Why would you protect the rogue who murdered Echo?"

His voice grew increasingly unhinged as he forced my chin up, compelling me to look at Echo.

The pup's adorable face came into view; my whole body began to tremble, yet I still didn't say a word.

The vision began to warp and blur, and the pack's curses grew even more intense.

"She is in league with the killer!"

"She is not our Luna; she deserves to die."

"Put her on trial! Give her punishment!"

Familiar pack mates of the past bared their fangs at me, glaring viciously as if they wanted to tear me to pieces right then and there.

My body trembled even more violently; my wolf , dormant for years, was stimulated into waking and kept sending desperate pleas to Silas.

Tears streamed endlessly from my eyes as I tried to soothe my wolf .

The witch's face blurred before my eyes; she hesitated for a moment and looked up at Silas on the dais.

At his signal, she raised her hand and cast a calming spell on me.

A blue light flared, and my chaotic mind gradually settled, the pain in my heart suppressed.

The images refracted by the crystal began to jump; chaotic curses, Silas's face, the pup's figure... all the visions twisted and blurred before finally coming into focus again.

Seeing the pack's confusion, the witch explained loudly:

"Such intense fluctuations mean the subject's emotions are extremely strong; what is being shown now must be the most profound and important memory in her subconscious."

The image grew clearer and clearer; it was still the familiar scene.

Afternoon sunlight spilled through the window as Echo, wearing his favorite wolf -tooth necklace, lay on the table drawing.

Crayons had smeared large patches of yellow roses across the paper, exactly matching the painting in the memorial hall from memory.

I sat beside him, peeling and slicing a freshly picked fruit, feeding it to him piece by piece.

"Mama! Look, I drew Daddy."

Echo pointed to the figure on the paper; it was dark and scribbled, but the silhouette clearly resembled Silas.

"Daddy and Mama are standing in a sea of flowers; I'm drawing myself too, so we are the happiest family."

I smiled as I fed the sliced fruit into his mouth.

"Echo is such a smart pup; you drew it so well."

He bounced onto the bed with a cheerful giggle and, mimicking Silas, made a comical vow: "When I grow up, I want to be a powerful Alpha just like Daddy."

Just then, Silas's scent reached the doorway; he pushed the door open, carrying a bouquet of yellow roses in his arms.

Echo instantly leaped off the bed, his little legs bounding to the doorway in two steps as he hugged Silas's thigh and climbed up him.

"Daddy! Look at my drawing!"

Silas bent down to pick him up, the exhaustion on his face instantly replaced by tenderness.

Watching the scene before them, the pack's curses ceased.

"Why would such a happy Luna protect a killer?"

"If she truly didn't love them, how could she remember these scenes so clearly?"

"Could there really be some hidden grievance that prevents her from naming the killer?"

But it was fleeting; the curses quickly drowned out the doubts.

"We are the strongest pack in combat; what kind of grievance could there be?"

"As long as she names the killer, the Alpha will go over and tear their entire clan to shreds."

"This bitch is still acting; why hasn't it reached the memory of the day of the incident yet?"

Everyone's expressions were complicated, unable to make sense of it, frowned as they stared fixedly at the vision.

"Elara is guilty! She must have colluded with rogues to intentionally harm our pack's heir."

Jesse stood up, her eyes locked onto me; she was determined to make me pay today.

Meanwhile, Silas showed a hint of nostalgia, but hearing Jesse's words, he quickly suppressed it, revealing a dark and furious expression.

He stared fixedly at our happy selves on the screen, his wolf claw crushing the table in front of him into splinters.

"Enough!"

He suddenly roared, stepping down from the dais; ignoring the elders' attempts to stop him, he rushed to my side.

"You have no right to remember these things."

Then, he glared his slit pupils at the witch: "I want to see her memory of the incident right now."

A week later, the pack held a general assembly.Silas stood in the center of the altar. He had grown gaunt, his cheekbones jutting out sharply, his eyes sunken deep into his skull.Yet he stood tall. The aura of his wolf was faint, but it was no longer as fractured as it had been in the days prior. He confessed to everything. The second personality, the loss of control, the murder of Echo, and his seven years of misunderstanding toward me.He didn't offer a single word of defense. Only at the very end did he lift his head, looking out at the sea of pack members below, and say, "I willingly submit to the judgment of pack law. A life for a life."Jesse stood up, wanting to say something, but the High Elder placed a firm hand on her shoulder, holding her back. The entire hall fell into a pin-drop silence. Everyone waited for the verdict.Silas didn't wait for anyone's response. He turned to me, his gaze piercing through the crowd to land softly on my face."But there is one thing I must

I stared at her, my mind going completely blank.Jesse stumbled into the room and collapsed to her knees beside my bed.Tear tracks crisscrossed her aged face. Those eyes that had once been as sharp as a hawk's were now filled with nothing but utter confusion and grief."Back then... I simply didn't like you. I thought you weren't worthy of Silas.""I had arranged for an Alpha from the borderlands to meet you. Nothing happened, but I told Silas that Echo's bloodline was in question.""I just wanted him to... neglect you, maybe even drive you away."She buried her face in her hands, sobs spilling through her fingers: "I never thought he would take it seriously. I never thought he would... I truly had no idea he would lay a hand on Echo!"Looking at her hunched back, the hatred I had harbored for seven years suddenly lost its foundation, hanging suspended in midair with nowhere to land.I had hated her. I hated every time she cornered me during Elder’s meetings, hated her blade-like glar

When I woke again, the bitter scent of medicinal herbs filled the air.I was lying on a soft fur blanket, my chest wrapped in thick bandages. Every breath pulled at the broken ribs, sending waves of dull, rhythmic pain through my body.I tried to move my fingers, and my fingertips brushed against a warm palm."You're awake."The High Elder's voice drifted down from above.Struggling to turn my eyes, I saw him sitting by the bed. He looked far older than I remembered, the lines carved into his brow as deep as if etched by a blade.Behind him stood two young healers, holding bowls of medicine and looking at me with complicated expressions."You've been unconscious for five days."The High Elder spoke slowly, his tone completely devoid of emotion."The Alpha... has locked himself in the dungeon. He refuses to see anyone."I opened my mouth, but my throat was too dry to produce a sound.A healer quickly offered a waterskin. The warm liquid slid down my esophagus, bringing a faint spark o

The great hall erupted into chaos once again."The Alpha says he can't remember?""Isn't that as good as a confession? He can't even form a defense!""But he is universally known as the father who loved Echo more than life itself..."The cacophony crashed over him like a tidal wave, yet Silas seemed entirely deaf to it.He knelt on the floor, pressing his hands fiercely against his temples. The veins on his forehead bulged, as if he were trying to physically rip that blank void out of his skull.Jesse threw herself over him, sobbing and muttering "it's not true" on an endless loop.Yet her gaze kept drifting involuntarily toward the glowing memory projection, tears cascading down her face. The man's face in the projection had fully materialized. It was Silas. The Council of Elders could no longer remain seated. The High Elder rose, leaning heavily on his staff, his ancient voice cutting through the deafening noise."Everyone, there is something deeply wrong here.
