Chapter 1

Author: Perfect Timing
At the entrance of our house.

"Mom, I want to go with you," Fiona said as she held our mother's hand tightly, her eyes full of smug delight.

My father, Michael Langley, frowned deeply, his gaze full of pity. "Fiona, you'll suffer if you go with your mother. Stay with me. I can give you a better life."

I stood on the sidewalk like I was a spectator in my own family. No one cared how I felt.

In this family of four, I had always been the extra one from the moment my sister was born.

Fiona was well-behaved and clever, knowing how to please our parents easily. Meanwhile, I was slow with words and did not even know how to seek attention around them. Little by little, they favored her increasingly, until I became almost invisible in this house.

Jessica looked down at Fiona with clear disapproval in her eyes. "Fiona, stop being so stubborn. Your dad is right. You'll suffer if you stay with me."

But Fiona had already made up her mind. She shook her head and said firmly, "No. I want to go with you."

Michael sighed and finally gave in when he saw what was happening. "Fine. Do what you want. But if life gets too hard, remember to come and find me."

Fiona shot me a smug, provocative look as she said, "Go with Dad, Ursula. Relax, your good fortune is still ahead of you."

Then, she took Jessica's hand and left without looking back.

I watched as their figures disappeared from my sight and thought of everything that had happened in my previous life after I followed Jessica. A mix of emotions swirled in my heart.

Michael gave me an impatient look. He said nothing more and just told me to get into the car.

Outside the window, the scenery rushed past in a blur until the car stopped in front of a grand mansion. Only then did I snap out of my thoughts.

"This is Empyrean Street, a luxury neighborhood. It's worth twenty thousand dollars per square foot," Michael said as he held up two fingers, pride in his voice.

I stared at the imposing building ahead, stunned.

Michael could never afford a mansion like this, even with his one-hundred-thousand-dollar yearly salary, unless he had already found himself a wealthy new woman.

"This will be your home from now on. Stay sharp and don't get into any trouble." Michael looked at me with open disdain. "Otherwise, you'll be punished."

I forced out a small smile. "I understand."

Satisfied, he nodded and led me into the villa.

The decor inside was luxurious and refined. You could see wealth in every detail.

In the vast living room, a slightly plump woman in expensive clothes walked toward us, and Michael hurried over to her.

"Zoey, won't you catch a cold, wearing so little?" Michael said in a flattering tone.

She did not answer him. Instead, she glanced at me, and a faint, disdainful smile appeared on her lips. "So… This is your daughter? Her face is acceptable, but everything else is quite ordinary."

Michael's smile froze, and he shot me a glare. "She has always been like this since she was little. No need to bother with her."

His voice turned stern. "Why are you just standing there? Hurry up and greet her. This is your… Your…"

"Ms. Howard. From now on, call me Ms. Howard." Zoey cut him off.

I stood quietly to the side, my voice devoid of anger or argumentativeness. "Yes, Ms. Howard."

In my previous life, words like that might have filled me with shame. Now, I knew how to face this kind of mockery.

Not to mention that this woman was Zoey Howard, a self-made, strong, independent woman in Arman City. She herself was a wealthy elite in her own right, and she had every right to look down on me.

At that moment, the maids called out together, "Mr. Howard."

I jumped and quickly turned around.

Scott Howard exited the car, a cold expression on his face. He wore a perfectly tailored suit, his features sharp and deep set with eagle eyes.

Zoey spoke nonchalantly, "This is Scott, my son. He is handling all the company affairs now."

Michael rushed in with a smile. "Mr. Howard, nice to meet you."

Scott gave him a brief smile and did not respond, leaving Michael standing there awkwardly.

"Have a look at our two new residents. This is Michael Langley, and this is his daughter…" She raised a brow at me.

"Ursula Langley," I said softly.

Scott gave a slight nod, his gaze landing on me and the old school uniform that had been worn for years. Then, he asked, "You study at Capital High?"

Once the Howard Group was back on track, Michael showed up again with a fawning smile on his face."Zoey, we're still family, after all. Now that the company is doing great again, as Ursula's dad, I want to contribute, too." His eyes were evasive, and his tone was excessively flattering.Zoey sat on the couch, looking at the man in front of her coldly, a faint sneer on her lips. "Contribute? You didn't think that way when you left in the first place. Now that the company's doing well, you want to come back and take a piece? Not happening."Michael's face froze with embarrassment instantly, but that didn't stop him from trying to explain. "Don't say that, Zoey. I admit I was wrong. I'll do better from now on."Zoey had clearly heard enough. She raised her hand, and security came to escort him out.As the door closed, there was a cold determination in her eyes.At the same time, Jessica's life was collapsing. After Fiona had gone to prison, it was as if she had lost the only pillar

Fiona walked off after she had said her piece to me.So, the person who had leaked the Howard Group's secrets was her all along.I realised this was extremely serious, and I had to tell Scott immediately. I rushed back to the company and repeated Fiona's words to him, word for word.Scott's expression darkened after he finished hearing what I had to say. "She's incredibly reckless. Does she really think I can't do anything to her now?"-Then began a covert investigation. We checked every document and record, questioning anyone who might know something. Finally, we found a lead late one night.Back when Fiona had been living at the Howard estate, she had stumbled across confidential company files. Greed had gotten the better of her, and she had secretly copied the documents before selling them to a competitor. When we found the evidence and confronted her, she still tried to deny everything. "What proof do you have that I was the one who leaked anything confidential?"But we al

"You're on your own now, you moron! The truth is, the Howard family is bankrupt. Let's see how long you can keep that attitude!" Fiona's words felt like a curse, making my heart sink. She walked away after she was done.-Sure enough, something happened to the Howard family soon after. Their once powerful business empire began to crumble after a sudden, damaging leak of confidential data.In the office, the mood was heavy. Scott sat behind his desk with a deep frown, his fingertip tapping lightly on the surface with a level of anxiety never seen before."Mr. Howard, this incident is extremely serious. Our client data, product formulas, and even our future strategic plans have all been leaked," Scott's personal assistant's voice was low and tense, every word hitting Scott heavily.Scott drew a long breath and forced himself to stay calm. "Investigate this. Find out exactly who did this!"But they couldn't find anything.Because of this, the Howard family's company fell into an

"Oh, you're back?" Zoey stood up when she saw me. "I've already spoken with your father. He'll join our company and start from the bottom."I looked at them both, not sure what to say or do.Zoey walked over and patted my shoulder lightly. "Your father and your sister also need a chance."I opened my mouth, but before I could speak, Fiona appeared in the doorway. A pleased smile formed on her lips, as if everything was unfolding exactly as she had planned. "You're finally home. There's something I think they should know."My heart sank. I could already sense how she was going to stab me in my back with the words she was going to say."Those purses and jewelry… She was the one who told me to steal them." Her tears fell at once, but her voice was cold and sharp. She looked straight at me, her eyes full of intimidation. "If she didn't tell me to do it, why would someone like me, who lives under someone else's roof, even be bold enough to touch the things that belong to the Howard fa

Zoey stared at Scott in disbelief. She hadn't expected him to speak at all."Is that all you plan to say?" Scott's voice was calm, yet it carried a tone that allowed no refusal.I observed them both, and an unfamiliar emotion rose slowly in my heart.I took a deep breath and slowly said, "I… I'm very grateful that you didn't condemn me alongside them. My sister's actions don't represent me. I…""Stay." That one word was enough to stun me as I looked at Scott. He then added, "You have always had very good grades, and you're bright. You can consider joining the Howard Group and working with me in the future."My heart skipped a beat and then went wild with unexplainable excitement. For someone like me, this was an opportunity beyond anything I had ever dared dream of. I raised my head to look at him, my heart pounding as I nodded. In the end, I chose not to study overseas. Perhaps staying here suited me better. Some time later, Michael came to me. His voice was worn and heavy wi

Fiona stared at Zoey in terror, her eyes full of despair. She tried to deny it, but Zoey's cold gaze and unquestionable tone made her completely lose her composure."I… I didn't…" Fiona's voice trembled as she desperately held on to her last hope, but Zoey did not give her that chance at all.She turned her head slightly and said to the servants, "Take her away."Fiona tried to struggle free, refusing to go.I didn't move, and I felt absolutely no sympathy for her. A faint smile formed on my lips as I quietly shook my head.Oh, my dear sister. You've lived under the same roof as Zoey for two lifetimes, yet you still honestly think she was that easy to fool. A woman who raised a son as calm and capable as Scott would never be a fool."Zoey, how could you drive Fiona out? She's my daughter…" Michael's voice pleaded as he tried to speak up for Fiona, but Zoey cut him off with a single, icy look."You remember she is your daughter, I see? The fact that I've tolerated her stay in the
