The White Wolf's Goodbye

Chapter 1

Penulis: Maple
I hit submit, and a message popped up on the application system.

[Application successful. Under the Wolf Council's classified decree, this cannot be withdrawn.]

In the Frost Pack, every wolf has to train with another pack for two years after coming of age. Once the training's done, they return to Frost. The Intelligence Bureau is the only exception. Joining the Intelligence Bureau is a one-way ticket. No way back.

I'd just closed my laptop when Caleb and the others walked in. Caleb is the Alpha heir of Frost, and the guy I'd been crushing on for ages.

"All set?" He asked me, but his eyes were fixed on Mira the whole time, his hands busy handing her a cup of warm deer milk.

Mira is an Omega, frail since birth. Caleb keeps her close, like one wrong move and she'll break.

This is my apartment, yet Mira has more of a presence here than I do. I gave her a spare key a while back to make things easier for her.

Now her windproof cloak hangs in my entryway, her special plush comb sits in my bathroom. Even the rug in front of the coffee table got swapped for that pink cashmere one she likes.

I nodded calmly. "All set."

Caleb started writing on his palm with a pen. "Come on, let's see if you guessed right this time."

I lowered my eyes. "No need to guess. I know you picked Blackstone Pack."

Caleb's pen froze mid-stroke. "So we're actually in sync this time." He paused. "Tonight, check everyone's application materials. Don't let anything slip."

His tone was casual. Like he was certain I'd applied to Blackstone too. Like sorting everyone's paperwork and packing their things was naturally my job.

Mira picked up her cup and said softly: "Vera, I'm still short one recommendation letter. Could you ask the proctor for me?"

"And about housing." Derek shoved an iPad right under my nose. "Didn't you put together that comparison chart of all the pack regions? Share it with us. Mira's sensitive to smells, so she needs a clean neighborhood."

Ian chimed in. "Not too high a floor either. Too high means too much wind, and Mira's health can't take it."

I looked up at them, and the last bit of hope in my chest went cold. I'd been preparing for this training for half a year. Besides Caleb, Derek and Ian are the Beta and Gamma heirs. For them, and for Frost, I'd carefully compared and picked the packs we'd train with. I'd made over a dozen spreadsheets.

They used to call me obsessive.

"It's just training—does it really matter where we go? Why do you have to overthink everything? You're exhausting."

Now that it's Mira, they wanted to pave every step of the road under her feet.

I bit my lip. "I don't need those charts anymore. I deleted them."

Caleb's face darkened. "Aren't you going to Blackstone too? How do you not need them? Can you stop being so unreasonable?"

I wanted to tell him I wasn't going to Blackstone. I wanted to ask if he'd ever cared about me. But the words died on my lips when Mira cut in.

She put on that wounded look: "It's okay, I can put it all together myself. An Omega should be doing these chores anyway..."

Caleb reached out and ruffled her hair, his voice softening. "I'm here. No one's gonna bully you." Then he turned his gaze on me like a blade. "Vera wants to go back to her hometown to study. Everyone gets it. You're the only one sulking, putting on that White Wolf attitude."

My eyes burned. The pain pressed against my lips, keeping me silent.

Sure, I'm a White Wolf, but ever since we were pups, I was the one taking care of them.

Caleb's allergic to cinnamon, so at every hunt feast, I carefully screened the seasonings. Derek's always losing things, so before we go out, I check if he's forgotten anything. Ian loves snacks, so there's always a pack of dried fruit in my bag for him.

At first, they thought I was the one person in the world who understood them best. We held hands and swore to the moon we'd never be apart. But over time, they just started taking it for granted. My effort turned into air. Essential, but invisible.

Now they say I'm putting on a White Wolf attitude.

Mira's eyes went red: "Actually, you guys don't have to come back to Blackstone with me. I can do it alone. I even booked a whole roast lamb place on the east side of town, wanted us all to celebrate..."

"Don't be silly." Caleb pinched her cheek. "Of course we're going to Blackstone, and we're celebrating."

Then all three of my childhood friends crowded around Mira and got up. At the door, Caleb turned back and looked at me impatiently.

"Why aren't you coming? Waiting for us to send you an invitation?"

I kept my head down. "I'm... not going."

The moment I said it, something in my chest gave a sharp little tug. I'd decided to leave a long time ago, but face to face with him, I still couldn't let go.

Caleb let out a scoff. "Right. The White Wolf's too good to hang out with us. Stay here by yourself then."

I watched them leave, laughing and talking. From start to finish, not one of them asked where I'd applied.

The second the door shut, my breath felt cut off. My phone screen lit up.

[Intelligence Bureau targeted recruitment application approved. Please complete check-in within 48 hours.]

[Further arrangements are classified. Do not disclose to anyone uninvolved.]

  • The White Wolf's Goodbye   Chapter 10

Mira recognized Caleb. She shouted frantically, "It's me! Move!"The next second, Caleb shifted and lunged at her, hard. Midair, he grabbed her shoulder and slammed her to the ground. The cloth bag in Mira's hands hit the pavement, and vials of the drug rolled out.Crack!A sickly sweet smell spread through the air. Caleb's nose twitched, and his face changed instantly. The "False Moon" drug smelled almost exactly like me. Nine parts out of ten.I caught up and cuffed Mira's hands behind her back. Her cheek was pressed to the cold stone, but her eyes were fixed on Caleb. "Why?" Her voice shook. "Didn't you recognize me?"Caleb looked at her coldly. "I did.""Then why did you stop me? I'm your Mira!"Caleb let her go and stood up, looking down at her. "Because Vera told me to stop you." His tone was matter-of-fact, like he was stating a self-evident law of geometry. The light in Mira's eyes died, inch by inch. A moment later, she started to laugh, quietly at first, then more and more un

The alley went quiet for two seconds.Caleb lifted his head, his lips moving. "When?""The first day I met you."His fingers went stiff, and the scarf slipped from his palm.A White Wolf's nose is sharper than any other wolf's. In the same stretch of forest, other wolves only smelled leaves and grass. I could smell the rabbits under the roots, the water in the cracks of the rocks. The first time I saw Caleb, I smelled something special on him. A faint sweetness hidden inside the scent of fir. Like a piece of candy the moon goddess had handed me. Every wolf's scent is different, but only his carried that thread of sweetness.Back then, I didn't know what it was. I only knew that whenever I got close to him, my heart sped up for no reason. He reached out his hand, and I followed him. He told me to guess the word on his palm, and I guessed, again and again. When I guessed wrong, I chased after him. He was my racing heartbeat, and he was my one and only.Only as I grew up did I start to wo

  • The White Wolf's Goodbye   Chapter 8

I spent a year passing the Intelligence Bureau's internship assessment with the top score. The first field mission I got was to Blackstone Pack, to track down a banned drug called "False Moon." It can fake a destined-mate scent. My colleagues and I chased it for a month, and tonight we were moving in to shut it down.I'd just reached the street corner when someone shouted behind me. "Vera!"My feet stopped dead. In the Intelligence Bureau, no one but my direct superior knew my real name.I turned around. Caleb was standing across the street. He pushed through the crowd and came stumbling toward me. "Vera! It's really you!"Wolves passing by stopped to stare at us.Caleb ran up to me and reached for my shoulder. I drove my fist into his stomach. He let out a grunt and doubled over."Shut up!" The Intelligence Bureau has rules. No revealing your real name during a field mission. Once your identity's blown, the whole operation can get ripped out by the roots.Caleb clutched his stomach an

  • The White Wolf's Goodbye   Chapter 7

Caleb's POVThe scent he'd once known so well now set off a tidal wave in Caleb's chest. His wolf spirit shuddered inside him, like a current was coursing through his whole body. That pleasure, sinking down to his very bones, made the answer surface in him on pure instinct.Destined mate.Once a wolf comes of age, they can identify their destined mate by scent.Caleb lowered his head and stared at the scarf in his hands. His throat tightened. So the moon goddess had blessed him long ago, and he'd never even noticed.Caleb suddenly thought of that game they'd played for over ten years. Write your choice on your palm, then flip them over and compare. The truth was, they'd agreed on the answer beforehand, then watched to see if Vera guessed right. If she didn't, she had to chase after them. He'd never told her why he loved that game. Vera is a White Wolf. A noble White Wolf, one that appears maybe once every few centuries. Even as the Alpha heir, everyone said he was the one marrying up.

Caleb's POVCaleb instinctively gripped his phone tighter. "She said so. She's going away to clear her head."The second it came out, he caught himself. Even he was caught off guard.Luna pressed him. "Clear her head where?""Mother, I've got something to deal with. I'll call you back."He hung up, his palm slick with sweat. The Alpha heir, and he didn't even know where the girl he loved had gone. He couldn't bring himself to say that out loud.Derek and Ian exchanged looks, at a loss for words.Mira's voice came from behind Caleb. "Since Vera's off clearing her head, I'll stay here for a few days and wait for her."Caleb turned to look at Mira, and for the first time, her smile struck him as fake. How could she not have caught that he was lying?Caleb nodded stiffly. "Stay, then." At least if Vera came back, Mira could tell him right away.Derek sank onto the couch, murmuring, "She's not going to Blackstone? She's not coming with us?"Ian paced around like a headless fly, then suddenl

  • The White Wolf's Goodbye   Chapter 5

Caleb's POVCaleb kept checking his watch, and finally couldn't hold it in anymore. "Where is she? Why hasn't Vera picked us up yet? So slow with everything."Mira tightened her grip on his arm. "Vera's the slow type. Or maybe she just doesn't want to come get me."Caleb frowned and dialed Vera's number. "The number you have dialed is switched off."He tried again. Still off.Caleb hung up. "What's she throwing a fit about now? Forget her. I'll drive you myself."Mira nodded right away, her eyes curving into a smile.Caleb drove Mira to the shopping district. Mira tried on a dress, spun twice in front of the mirror, and turned to ask him, "How does it look?""Looks good." Caleb answered absentmindedly, his eyes glued to his phone. Right in the middle of shopping, he dialed Vera's number seven more times. All seven times, switched off.Ever since they were pups, Vera always picked up on the first ring. He used to tease her that she answered faster than a customer service line. Now she'd
