Chapter 4

Penulis: Maple
At first light, I dug out my suitcase. Only once I started packing did I realize how little here actually belonged to me. Almost everything in the apartment was stuff I'd prepared for them. All those years, I'd been living like their shadow.

Notes in my handwriting stuck to the fridge.

[Tomorrow's the full moon. Brew Caleb's calming tea in advance.]

[Remind Derek to take the car in for maintenance.]

[Ian's favorite book is out of stock. Remember to special-order it at the bookstore.]

[Mira can't drink cold deer milk.]

The last note was in Caleb's handwriting. He said Mira would crash at my place sometimes, and reminded me to take good care of her.

I peeled the notes off one by one. With each one, my wolf spirit felt a little lighter.

The group chat was blowing up.

Derek: [Where's the Blackstone Pack info sheet? Send it already.]

Ian: [Where'd you put my handwritten application?]

Mira: [Vera, can you come with me to get a recommendation letter from the proctor? I'm a little scared to go alone.]

Caleb's message came right after: [Stop dragging your feet. Get everyone's paperwork ready.]

I typed out my reply, one word at a time: [The files are in the drawer of the bookcase. Do it yourselves from now on.]

Three seconds later, Caleb called. "Vera, are you done yet? How long are you gonna drag this out?"

It was noisy on his end. Mira was asking him where they should go shopping later.

I put him on speaker and kept packing. "I'm not dragging anything out." My voice was calm, flat as a glass of pure water. In this goodbye, numbness was the only antidote.

Caleb went quiet for a beat, then sneered: "Let me guess. Is it because your name wasn't on the red carpet? Or because I gave the necklace to Mira?" He dropped his voice. "You're a White Wolf. What good thing haven't you seen? You really gotta fight Mira over one necklace? We're all going to Blackstone together. Aren't you worried it'll be awkward later?"

I couldn't help but laugh out loud. Someone I'd barely even get to see again, and he was still fantasizing about a "later."

My laugh set Caleb off. "You're still laughing? You think being a White Wolf makes you so special?"

"Caleb, get one thing straight. You're the one who keeps bringing up the White Wolf thing, not me."

The line went silent for a moment. Like he wasn't used to the person who'd always been so docile talking back.

"I don't want to fight with you. Just get the paperwork ready. Also, I'm taking Mira shopping. Come pick us up."

I zipped the suitcase shut and listened to that soft click, and my chest suddenly felt hollow.

"Caleb."

Caleb asked impatiently, "What?"

I looked around the apartment one last time. There'd been warm moments between Caleb and me here too. But they were like beer foam, lasting only a short while.

I picked up my phone, my fingertip hovering at the edge of the screen, before I said, word by word: "Goodbye, Caleb."

I hung up, dragged my luggage out the door, and flagged down a taxi.

The group chat kept flashing. They were arguing about what to eat tonight. Mira said she wanted steak on the west side of town. Derek said it was too far.

Caleb fired back right away: [Have Vera drive over and get you. She's coming to pick me and Mira up for shopping anyway.]

Ian replied with a laughing emoji: [Leave it to Vera the housekeeper. She's always looking after everyone.]

Housekeeper.

I stared at that word, and all that was left in my chest was a dull ache.

The first time Caleb shifted and nearly lost control, I was the one who held on to him for dear life, even after his claws tore into me. When Derek got lost on a hunt, I was the one who put together a search party and went into the forest after him. The first time Ian got rejected by a she-wolf, I was the one who stood on the balcony with him all night in the cold wind.

All of it, I did willingly. I believed that if you wanted someone's real heart, you had to give yours first. But to them, I was just a convenient tool.

Eyes stinging, I left the group chat and blocked every one of them.

The scenery outside the car window rushed backward. Along with my past with them.

When I reached the destination, the Intelligence Bureau officer verified my identity and said: "The car's ready, but you've still got two hours. Want to say goodbye to your friends or family?"

He reminded me, "Once you leave, you hand in your phone. No contact with the outside world."

I held out my phone to the officer. The moment it left my palm, it felt like I'd also let go of the hand Caleb once held.

"No need..." I said quietly. "Let's go now."

  • The White Wolf's Goodbye   Chapter 10

Mira recognized Caleb. She shouted frantically, "It's me! Move!"The next second, Caleb shifted and lunged at her, hard. Midair, he grabbed her shoulder and slammed her to the ground. The cloth bag in Mira's hands hit the pavement, and vials of the drug rolled out.Crack!A sickly sweet smell spread through the air. Caleb's nose twitched, and his face changed instantly. The "False Moon" drug smelled almost exactly like me. Nine parts out of ten.I caught up and cuffed Mira's hands behind her back. Her cheek was pressed to the cold stone, but her eyes were fixed on Caleb. "Why?" Her voice shook. "Didn't you recognize me?"Caleb looked at her coldly. "I did.""Then why did you stop me? I'm your Mira!"Caleb let her go and stood up, looking down at her. "Because Vera told me to stop you." His tone was matter-of-fact, like he was stating a self-evident law of geometry. The light in Mira's eyes died, inch by inch. A moment later, she started to laugh, quietly at first, then more and more un

The alley went quiet for two seconds.Caleb lifted his head, his lips moving. "When?""The first day I met you."His fingers went stiff, and the scarf slipped from his palm.A White Wolf's nose is sharper than any other wolf's. In the same stretch of forest, other wolves only smelled leaves and grass. I could smell the rabbits under the roots, the water in the cracks of the rocks. The first time I saw Caleb, I smelled something special on him. A faint sweetness hidden inside the scent of fir. Like a piece of candy the moon goddess had handed me. Every wolf's scent is different, but only his carried that thread of sweetness.Back then, I didn't know what it was. I only knew that whenever I got close to him, my heart sped up for no reason. He reached out his hand, and I followed him. He told me to guess the word on his palm, and I guessed, again and again. When I guessed wrong, I chased after him. He was my racing heartbeat, and he was my one and only.Only as I grew up did I start to wo

  • The White Wolf's Goodbye   Chapter 8

I spent a year passing the Intelligence Bureau's internship assessment with the top score. The first field mission I got was to Blackstone Pack, to track down a banned drug called "False Moon." It can fake a destined-mate scent. My colleagues and I chased it for a month, and tonight we were moving in to shut it down.I'd just reached the street corner when someone shouted behind me. "Vera!"My feet stopped dead. In the Intelligence Bureau, no one but my direct superior knew my real name.I turned around. Caleb was standing across the street. He pushed through the crowd and came stumbling toward me. "Vera! It's really you!"Wolves passing by stopped to stare at us.Caleb ran up to me and reached for my shoulder. I drove my fist into his stomach. He let out a grunt and doubled over."Shut up!" The Intelligence Bureau has rules. No revealing your real name during a field mission. Once your identity's blown, the whole operation can get ripped out by the roots.Caleb clutched his stomach an

Caleb's POVThe scent he'd once known so well now set off a tidal wave in Caleb's chest. His wolf spirit shuddered inside him, like a current was coursing through his whole body. That pleasure, sinking down to his very bones, made the answer surface in him on pure instinct.Destined mate.Once a wolf comes of age, they can identify their destined mate by scent.Caleb lowered his head and stared at the scarf in his hands. His throat tightened. So the moon goddess had blessed him long ago, and he'd never even noticed.Caleb suddenly thought of that game they'd played for over ten years. Write your choice on your palm, then flip them over and compare. The truth was, they'd agreed on the answer beforehand, then watched to see if Vera guessed right. If she didn't, she had to chase after them. He'd never told her why he loved that game. Vera is a White Wolf. A noble White Wolf, one that appears maybe once every few centuries. Even as the Alpha heir, everyone said he was the one marrying up.

Caleb's POVCaleb instinctively gripped his phone tighter. "She said so. She's going away to clear her head."The second it came out, he caught himself. Even he was caught off guard.Luna pressed him. "Clear her head where?""Mother, I've got something to deal with. I'll call you back."He hung up, his palm slick with sweat. The Alpha heir, and he didn't even know where the girl he loved had gone. He couldn't bring himself to say that out loud.Derek and Ian exchanged looks, at a loss for words.Mira's voice came from behind Caleb. "Since Vera's off clearing her head, I'll stay here for a few days and wait for her."Caleb turned to look at Mira, and for the first time, her smile struck him as fake. How could she not have caught that he was lying?Caleb nodded stiffly. "Stay, then." At least if Vera came back, Mira could tell him right away.Derek sank onto the couch, murmuring, "She's not going to Blackstone? She's not coming with us?"Ian paced around like a headless fly, then suddenl

  • The White Wolf's Goodbye   Chapter 5

Caleb's POVCaleb kept checking his watch, and finally couldn't hold it in anymore. "Where is she? Why hasn't Vera picked us up yet? So slow with everything."Mira tightened her grip on his arm. "Vera's the slow type. Or maybe she just doesn't want to come get me."Caleb frowned and dialed Vera's number. "The number you have dialed is switched off."He tried again. Still off.Caleb hung up. "What's she throwing a fit about now? Forget her. I'll drive you myself."Mira nodded right away, her eyes curving into a smile.Caleb drove Mira to the shopping district. Mira tried on a dress, spun twice in front of the mirror, and turned to ask him, "How does it look?""Looks good." Caleb answered absentmindedly, his eyes glued to his phone. Right in the middle of shopping, he dialed Vera's number seven more times. All seven times, switched off.Ever since they were pups, Vera always picked up on the first ring. He used to tease her that she answered faster than a customer service line. Now she'd
