Chapter 3

Penulis: Maple
When we got to the barbecue place, the five of us sat around the long table.

Derek raised his glass and looked at me with a smile. "Vera, how'd you guess we were going to Blackstone this time?"

Ian picked it up from there. "Luck. After getting it wrong so many times, she had to hit it right eventually."

Caleb slid a plate of grilled meat in front of me. "Because she and I have that unspoken connection." He said it with his eyes resting softly on my face.

Mira gripped her fork, her fingers tightening little by little. She smiled quickly enough. "Caleb always understands Vera best."

I looked down at the meat on my plate. "I didn't guess."

The air went quiet for a beat.

"I overheard you guys talking with Mira. You said you were going to Blackstone."

Silence pressed down on the whole table.

Caleb was the first to speak. "It's just a game." He paused, his voice softening. "I was going to tell you anyway."

Derek shrugged. "We couldn't exactly wait until the deadline to tell you. Then you wouldn't have been able to go to Blackstone."

Ian chimed in, "The five of us are obviously gonna be together."

Caleb clinked his glass against mine, his tone certain. "We swore to the moon goddess together. How could we ever really leave you behind?"

I gripped the skirt on my knees, my knuckles going white. I couldn't tell them I'd chosen the Intelligence Bureau. Wordless silence was my last goodbye.

Seeing that I said nothing, the warmth drained out of Caleb's eyes. "Vera, it's just a game. Is that really worth pulling your White Wolf attitude over?"

"I've never pulled any attitude. I just—"

"Enough." Caleb cut me off. "I don't want to fight with you. We'll talk when you've calmed down."

Any more words would've been useless. I could only chew on my sorrow alone.

Mira lowered her head, her eyes going red. "It's all because I'm an Omega and can only go to the Blackstone Pack. I'm sorry."

Caleb reached out and ruffled her hair. "No need to apologize. You've got a heart of gold."

After the meal, everyone got in the car, and I was again put in the last row. I turned my face to the streetlights outside the window. Inside every one of them, a forgotten moon was caged.

Caleb and I had been seen as a perfect match by our elders since we were pups.

He's the Alpha heir, and I'm a White Wolf. There's no better match.

But the boy Caleb took my hand and said, dead serious: "I liked you first. Then I noticed your coat. White Wolf or not, I'd like you just the same."

For him, I let myself sink all the way down into the dust. A White Wolf, bowing low to look after him, to cater to him. But every time we fought, he'd say I was pulling the White Wolf attitude.

The car pulled into the Alpha estate. Four red carpets stretched from the door all the way to the main hall. Each carpet's end was embroidered in gold thread with a name. Caleb, Derek, Ian, Mira. Not mine.

The four of them laughed and stepped onto their own carpets, walking all the way up to the hall. I kept my head down and followed quietly behind them.

Luna, Caleb's mother, was at the hall doors greeting them. She saw me and blinked in surprise. "Vera's here too? Caleb didn't tell me you were coming."

Caleb shrugged. "She's a White Wolf. Who knows if she'd even grace us with her presence?"

I smiled awkwardly.

Luna had thrown them a surprise party, a send-off wishing them well in the Blackstone Pack. At the party, all three of my childhood friends fought over who got to dance with Mira. I sat alone in the corner, quietly watching them. Caleb didn't ask me to dance. I felt like I'd lost something, and like I'd gained something too.

Luna sat down beside me and took my hand gently. "Vera, I'm so sorry. We've been terrible hosts tonight."

I shook my head. "It's fine, Luna." This party was never about me anyway.

Luna brought out a moonstone necklace. "You're going to Blackstone too, right? This is my gift for you."

I was about to decline when Mira's voice came from behind me. "Wow, that necklace is gorgeous."

Caleb pushed his way over too. "Mother, this necklace would suit Mira's coloring perfectly. Give it to her."

Luna looked troubled. "This one's for Vera..."

"She's a White Wolf. Like she's short on necklaces?"

With that, Caleb took it from her hands and fastened it around Mira's neck.

Luna patted the back of my hand. "Sorry. I'll prepare another one for you next time."

I smiled and refused. "No need, Luna." Wolves in the Intelligence Bureau aren't allowed to wear necklaces.

The phone in my pocket buzzed.

  • The White Wolf's Goodbye   Chapter 10

Mira recognized Caleb. She shouted frantically, "It's me! Move!"The next second, Caleb shifted and lunged at her, hard. Midair, he grabbed her shoulder and slammed her to the ground. The cloth bag in Mira's hands hit the pavement, and vials of the drug rolled out.Crack!A sickly sweet smell spread through the air. Caleb's nose twitched, and his face changed instantly. The "False Moon" drug smelled almost exactly like me. Nine parts out of ten.I caught up and cuffed Mira's hands behind her back. Her cheek was pressed to the cold stone, but her eyes were fixed on Caleb. "Why?" Her voice shook. "Didn't you recognize me?"Caleb looked at her coldly. "I did.""Then why did you stop me? I'm your Mira!"Caleb let her go and stood up, looking down at her. "Because Vera told me to stop you." His tone was matter-of-fact, like he was stating a self-evident law of geometry. The light in Mira's eyes died, inch by inch. A moment later, she started to laugh, quietly at first, then more and more un

  • The White Wolf's Goodbye   Chapter 9

The alley went quiet for two seconds.Caleb lifted his head, his lips moving. "When?""The first day I met you."His fingers went stiff, and the scarf slipped from his palm.A White Wolf's nose is sharper than any other wolf's. In the same stretch of forest, other wolves only smelled leaves and grass. I could smell the rabbits under the roots, the water in the cracks of the rocks. The first time I saw Caleb, I smelled something special on him. A faint sweetness hidden inside the scent of fir. Like a piece of candy the moon goddess had handed me. Every wolf's scent is different, but only his carried that thread of sweetness.Back then, I didn't know what it was. I only knew that whenever I got close to him, my heart sped up for no reason. He reached out his hand, and I followed him. He told me to guess the word on his palm, and I guessed, again and again. When I guessed wrong, I chased after him. He was my racing heartbeat, and he was my one and only.Only as I grew up did I start to wo

  • The White Wolf's Goodbye   Chapter 8

I spent a year passing the Intelligence Bureau's internship assessment with the top score. The first field mission I got was to Blackstone Pack, to track down a banned drug called "False Moon." It can fake a destined-mate scent. My colleagues and I chased it for a month, and tonight we were moving in to shut it down.I'd just reached the street corner when someone shouted behind me. "Vera!"My feet stopped dead. In the Intelligence Bureau, no one but my direct superior knew my real name.I turned around. Caleb was standing across the street. He pushed through the crowd and came stumbling toward me. "Vera! It's really you!"Wolves passing by stopped to stare at us.Caleb ran up to me and reached for my shoulder. I drove my fist into his stomach. He let out a grunt and doubled over."Shut up!" The Intelligence Bureau has rules. No revealing your real name during a field mission. Once your identity's blown, the whole operation can get ripped out by the roots.Caleb clutched his stomach an

  • The White Wolf's Goodbye   Chapter 7

Caleb's POVThe scent he'd once known so well now set off a tidal wave in Caleb's chest. His wolf spirit shuddered inside him, like a current was coursing through his whole body. That pleasure, sinking down to his very bones, made the answer surface in him on pure instinct.Destined mate.Once a wolf comes of age, they can identify their destined mate by scent.Caleb lowered his head and stared at the scarf in his hands. His throat tightened. So the moon goddess had blessed him long ago, and he'd never even noticed.Caleb suddenly thought of that game they'd played for over ten years. Write your choice on your palm, then flip them over and compare. The truth was, they'd agreed on the answer beforehand, then watched to see if Vera guessed right. If she didn't, she had to chase after them. He'd never told her why he loved that game. Vera is a White Wolf. A noble White Wolf, one that appears maybe once every few centuries. Even as the Alpha heir, everyone said he was the one marrying up.

Caleb's POVCaleb instinctively gripped his phone tighter. "She said so. She's going away to clear her head."The second it came out, he caught himself. Even he was caught off guard.Luna pressed him. "Clear her head where?""Mother, I've got something to deal with. I'll call you back."He hung up, his palm slick with sweat. The Alpha heir, and he didn't even know where the girl he loved had gone. He couldn't bring himself to say that out loud.Derek and Ian exchanged looks, at a loss for words.Mira's voice came from behind Caleb. "Since Vera's off clearing her head, I'll stay here for a few days and wait for her."Caleb turned to look at Mira, and for the first time, her smile struck him as fake. How could she not have caught that he was lying?Caleb nodded stiffly. "Stay, then." At least if Vera came back, Mira could tell him right away.Derek sank onto the couch, murmuring, "She's not going to Blackstone? She's not coming with us?"Ian paced around like a headless fly, then suddenl

  • The White Wolf's Goodbye   Chapter 5

Caleb's POVCaleb kept checking his watch, and finally couldn't hold it in anymore. "Where is she? Why hasn't Vera picked us up yet? So slow with everything."Mira tightened her grip on his arm. "Vera's the slow type. Or maybe she just doesn't want to come get me."Caleb frowned and dialed Vera's number. "The number you have dialed is switched off."He tried again. Still off.Caleb hung up. "What's she throwing a fit about now? Forget her. I'll drive you myself."Mira nodded right away, her eyes curving into a smile.Caleb drove Mira to the shopping district. Mira tried on a dress, spun twice in front of the mirror, and turned to ask him, "How does it look?""Looks good." Caleb answered absentmindedly, his eyes glued to his phone. Right in the middle of shopping, he dialed Vera's number seven more times. All seven times, switched off.Ever since they were pups, Vera always picked up on the first ring. He used to tease her that she answered faster than a customer service line. Now she'd
