Chapter 2

Author: Triple Six
Sarah touched Luke's tiny face, seemingly kind, but then, she pried his fingers off her one by one.

"Luke, be a good boy. Your father can celebrate it with you."

I picked up the wedding ring and looked at her, suppressing the anger in my tone. "Stella, before Sarah passed away, she promised she would spend one birthday with Luke. Couldn't you just pretend to fulfil your sister's wish, or pretend to show some pity for him by pretending to be his mother, just for his fifth birthday?"

My brother-in-law, Greg, appeared at this moment and said hostilely, "Michael, I'm sorry that your wife passed away. I'm also sorry that Luke has lost his mother, but you can't just steal my wife in front of Nina and me."

Sarah furrowed her brows as if about to turn me down. However, when I met with those indifferent eyes, she looked away shiftily. She was also taken aback when her eyes landed on the wedding ring.

She pursed her lips and said, "Honey, Michael is just looking out for his child. Luke is about to have his birthday. As his aunt and uncle, we should celebrate his birthday."

Then, she looked at me and said, "Michael, as your wife's younger sister, I'll help her fulfil her dying wish. I'll be with Luke for his fifth birthday."

I snorted sardonically.

Ever since she started taking over her younger sister's identity, she had been constantly emphasizing how she was Sarah's younger sister.

I threw the wedding ring into the bin. "Alright, then. I hope you don't go back on your word."

Luke beamed instantly when he heard Sarah's response. He immediately started discussing what to do and eat on his birthday.

All I felt was heartbreak for him. Sarah was his mother, yet he had to beg her to celebrate his birthday with him.

Sarah did not only dump me–she also abandoned her only flesh and blood.

I could barely suppress my emotions, so I quickly headed back to my room. Luke noticed my sadness, so he ran over and held my hand, saying, "Daddy, don't be sad. I'll always be here.

"I know that Mommy no longer wants to be my Mommy. I also know she doesn't want to celebrate my birthday. I-I just thought of seeing her for the last time. Perhaps after this, we'll never see her again…"

I hugged my son–my kind, understanding boy–tighty. "I'm sorry, Luke. I'm not sad. I'm just…"

'Heartbroken for you.'

How pathetic was it to crave love from a mother who would rather fake her death to abandon her husband and son?

Still, I could not tell Luke that his mother no longer loved either of us, so he should not have his hopes up. He might be less sad if he did.

I could not ask him this, so I secretly prayed Sarah could find it in her to give Luke a final good memory worth remembering.

After his birthday, we would no longer bother her.

On the evening of Luke's birthday, Luke dressed up in his favorite clothes. He personally made a hazelnut cake, eagerly waiting for Sarah to come home.

That day, it was only Luke and me at home. Even my in-laws, Richard and Barbara, were not home.

Richard and Barbara only had Sarah and Stella. Both sisters, worried about their parents, decided to live with their parents even after marriage.

I called Sarah a dozen times, but no one picked up. I kept calling until she switched off her phone.

When it was almost midnight, the light in Luke's eyes had long gone out.

I bit my lip and asked, "Maybe everyone's busy tonight. Why don't we cut the cake tomorrow?"

Sarah ran over to me and tugged my sleeves, rambling, "I am still Luke's mother. Now that you know I'm not dead, we can rekindle our marriage!"Her eyes reddened, looking flustered while trying to ask for my forgiveness.I sneered at her.She knew that as long as she knelt and begged, I would forgive her time and time again. This was why she was willing to hurt me one too many times."We're done. Sarah, from the moment you made your decision, you should bear the consequences. I've quietly stepped out of your life. I hope you'll do the same."Sarah left dejectedly, yet I felt nothing. After all, I no longer loved her.In the evening, Christine fetched Luke from school before waiting for me at the office entrance. As time went by, our feelings for each other grew stronger. Who knew that one could actually foster a good relationship? When two people who were kind and compatible came together, each day was happier than the previous. As we walked home hand in hand, we made a detour

I ignored Sarah. Instead, I looked right at Greg."How did Stella die? Do you really not know?"Greg lowered his head, somewhat flustered as he stuttered, "W-why are you asking me all this? A-are you suspecting me of my wife's death? It's one thing to try to come after our company, but now you're also trying to wrongfully accuse me?"Your wife chose to stay by my side, so you got jealous and now hate me. Now you're trying to frame me? Is that it?"Sarah stood up for Greg and snapped, "Michael, this is all my fault. Greg was grieving the hardest when Stella died. How could you make such a terrible joke?"I threw the documents I received a few days ago on the desk."I've realized it before, actually. On my wedding day, when Sarah said that Luke was her only son, Greg's expression was extremely odd. He wasn't surprised or shocked, so I got someone to look into him. I found some interesting stuff."The day that Stella died was the day she caught Greg having an affair. There was even

Sarah said icily, "I know you're hurt, but I'll explain this to you soon. You don't have to put on an act to provoke me. I'll make it up to Luke and celebrate his birthday…"I was visibly expressionless throughout Sarah's entire speech. Luke did not even look at his mother once.It was comical, really. The audacity of this woman, who had faked her death, to abandon her husband and son.Greg's expression was peculiar, though. He no longer asked any questions as if he long knew that Sarah was not Stella.I said to Christine, "We can just ignore her. Today's our wedding, and I don't want them to spoil our mood."Christine nodded and rolled the window up. Just like that, we left for two different directions in life. This, to me, was just a small episode of my life.Soon, I arrived at the wedding venue. As I was getting out, a slender, fair hand reached out to Luke and me. Christine said gently, "My husband and baby son, please get out of the car."Luke and I chuckled, amused by wh

Christine said in a low voice, "Michael Sanders, will you marry me?"I was in complete shock at how far Christine was willing to go to put on an act. I nodded in compliance. "Yes, I do."She bent down and asked Luke, "Luke, will you let me be your new Mommy?"Luke stared down at his toes and asked, "Will we celebrate my birthday together?""That's for sure. We'll celebrate every birthday you have with you and your Daddy," replied Christine tenderly. The marriage proposal went extremely smoothly. Looking at the gown and tuxedo Christine had prepared, even the custom-made rings, I could not help but ask her, "Christine, you're really going all out on this act."She looked at me seriously and said, "I'm being serious, Michael. Will you give me a chance, please?"I blushed.…Our wedding was on a bright, sunny day.We were two business titans joining hands in marriage, yet we did not inform any media. We chose to have a low-profile wedding.I helped Christine into the car with m

Barbara's response baffled Sarah."Mom…are you joking? How is this possible? That can't be! Michael loves me! How could he marry another woman?"Say something, Mom! What's going on?!"Barbara said helplessly, "They know you're not dead. They know you've resumed your sister's identity to be with Greg…"Sarah muttered to herself in a daze, "They… They knew all along."Richard and Barbara patted her shoulder. "Since you've chosen to start a new life, you should let him go.""Mom, Dad, what on earth are you talking about? Don't tell me you really believe that he's going to get married again? His wife had just passed away. He has a kid. Who else would want him besides me?"Still, Sarah's confidence wavered as she went on. She might look like she was objectively analyzing the situation when, in fact, she was just trying to persuade herself.Ironically, she had always wanted Luke and me to vanish from her life. When it truly happened, she suddenly could not come to terms with it.She

The tense atmosphere hung thick in the air.I was only looking at Sarah, but she did not dare look back, nor did she dare to admit her real identity. She was behaving very…shiftily.Suddenly, the clock rang midnight.Luke wiped away his tears and said to Sarah, "It's fine. It's really nothing. Thank you, Aunt Stella. Even though the cake is destroyed, I can still make a wish."I wish that Aunt Stella can live the life that she wants. I wish her all the happiness. I also wish my Daddy happiness."I lowered my head in disbelief. Luke had always known that Sarah was his mother. Even if she had faked her death and pretended to be Stella, he had always called her 'Mommy'.This was the first time he called her Aunt Stella."Luke…" Sarah looked at her son in disbelief, as if trying to find an answer in his gaze. She had fantasized countless times about what her life would be like if she had married Greg instead of me, instead of having Luke. How great that would be.However, when her
