Amelia's POV

Lily's apartment was warm, throwing blankets draped over the couch. Half-finished design sketches spread across the coffee table. A scented candle burning in the kitchen that smelled like cedar and vanilla.

Nothing like the Blackwood mansion, which was always perfectly temperature-controlled and completely soulless.

"Sit." Lily pointed at the couch without looking at me. She was already moving toward the kitchen, dropping her keys on the counter. "I'm making tea. Don't argue."

"I wasn't going to." I sat down slowly.

The cushions were soft beneath me. I leaned back and stared at the ceiling for a moment, letting the quiet settle. My coat was still on.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out the small compartment item I transferred before getting out of the car.

The wedding ring. It sat in the center of my palm under Lily's warm lamplight. Smaller than I remembered. Or maybe I had simply spent too long giving it more meaning than it deserved.

Lily appeared in the kitchen doorway with two mugs. She stopped when she saw what I was holding.

"Amelia."

"I'm not going to cry." I said immediately.

She crossed the room and sat beside me, handing over one of the mugs. She didn't say anything else. Just sat there, close enough that our shoulders nearly touched, and waited.

I turned the ring slowly between my fingers.

Three years ago, on a grey November morning, Damian slid this ring onto my finger. His expression had been unreadable, the same way it always was, and I stood beside him at the altar telling myself that unreadable wasn't the same as unfeeling.

I was so desperate to believe that.

The wedding was elegant. Every detail was arranged by both families to impress the right people. Flowers I did not choose. A guest list I barely even knew. A dress that fit perfectly because someone else had taken my measurements.

The only moment that felt real was when Damian's hand briefly covered mine after placing the ring.

I held onto that one second for three years.

"You know what the worst part is?" I said.

Lily looked at me. "What?"

"I don't even regret loving him." I shook my head slowly. "I regret staying after I already knew."

Lily wrapped both hands around her mug. "When did you know?"

I thought about it honestly. "About a year in." I said. "Maybe earlier."

She didn't flinch. Didn't say I told you so, even though she had every right to. That was the thing about Lily. She never used the truth as a weapon.

"I kept thinking I could fix it." I continued. "That if I was patient enough, present enough, if I just loved him correctly somehow..." I stopped. "As if love is something you can perform well to earn back."

"It isn't." Lily said simply.

"I know." I agreed. "It isn't."

I looked down at the ring one final time.

Then I stood, went toward Lily's bookshelf where I spotted something earlier, and reached for the small decorative box she kept on the second shelf. She bought it years ago from a market downtown and always meant to find a use for it.

I opened it. It was empty inside.

I placed the ring carefully in the center and closed the latch.

Some memories didn't deserve to be carried forever. But they also didn't deserve to be treated like they never happened.

I set the box on the shelf and stepped back.

"Feel anything?" Lily asked from the couch, watching me carefully.

I considered the question. "Lighter." I said. "Strangely lighter."

The corner of her mouth lifted. "Good."

I returned to the couch and picked up my mug. The tea was still warm. Chamomile, I realized after the first sip. Lily always remembered.

For a few minutes, neither of us spoke. The candle flickered in the kitchen. Outside, the city hummed steadily, unbothered and endless.

"Are you going to be okay here tonight?" Lily asked.

"You mean am I going to fall apart the moment you fall asleep?"

"Essentially, yes."

I almost smiled. "Probably not tonight." I said honestly. "Tonight I just feel... empty. The falling apart might come later."

"I'll be here for that too." She said without hesitation.

I looked at her. This woman who had dropped everything tonight without a second thought, who had driven to the Blackwood mansion ready to fight a billionaire with nothing but her bare hands and her complete lack of self-preservation.

"Lily." I said.

"Don't." She pointed at me. "If you're about to thank me, I will pour this tea directly on you."

I laughed. Lily grinned. "There she is."

"I'm still a mess." I said.

"Obviously." She tucked her feet beneath her on the cushion. "But you're a mess who signed those papers, walked out of that house, and took off that ring all in one night." She raised her mug slightly. "That's not nothing."

It wasn't nothing actually. I leaned back against the cushions and closed my eyes. The warmth of the apartment settled around me like something I did not realize I was missing.

Tomorrow would arrive with its own weight. The divorce would proceed. The world would continue moving. Damian would wake up in that enormous empty mansion and feel absolutely nothing, probably, while I rebuilt myself from whatever pieces remained.

But tonight, at least, I was not alone.

Lily's phone rang.

The sound broke through the quiet sharply. She frowned at the screen, clearly expecting to ignore it.

Then her expression changed.

"What?" I asked.

She turned the phone slowly toward me without answering.

The name on the screen stopped my breath entirely.

‘Grandfather Hart.’

My grandfather never called late. Not once in my memory. He was a man of scheduled calls and proper timing and absolute deliberateness in everything he did.

Which meant this call, at this hour, was not accidental.

Lily looked at me carefully. "Should I answer?"

My fingers curled around my mug.

I have not spoken to my grandfather since before the wedding. Since the day I chose Damian over the family name and walked away from everything I was supposed to become.

"Answer it." I said quietly.

  • The Wife He Divorced Became A Billionaire Heiress    CHAPTER 124

Damian's POVI sat in my office for a long time after Grace hung up, the phone still sitting in my hand like I'd forgotten how to put it down.A kid. My kid.I ran through every possible way to feel about that and landed on something I hadn't expected, not triumph, not some quiet hope that this might pull Amelia back into my life. Just a strange, heavy kind of steadiness. Like something in me had been waiting for this news for longer than I realized.Marcus knocked and stepped in a few minutes later, my expression apparently giving something away."Sir? Is everything alright?""I need you to reach out to Amelia's office." I said. "Just a message asking if she has time to talk. Whenever it works for her."He studied me for a second. "Is this about the paternity story that's been circulating?""It's confirmed." I said. "Grace called this morning. It's mine."Marcus's eyebrows went up slightly, but he didn't say

  • The Wife He Divorced Became A Billionaire Heiress    CHAPTER 123

Amelia's POVI ended up not calling him at all. I texted instead, just one line.‘Can I come over? It's important. I know it's late.’His response came back faster than I expected. ‘Yeah. Come now.’I drove over in sweatpants, no makeup, hair thrown up in whatever half-knot I could manage in under a minute, because this wasn't a conversation that needed me looking put together. If anything, looking put together would've felt wrong. He opened the door before I even knocked, like he'd been standing right there waiting."You look like something's wrong." He said, stepping aside to let me in."Results came back." I said, not even bothering to sit down first. His whole body went still. "Okay.""It's Damian's."He didn't say anything for a second. Just stood there in his kitchen, one hand braced against the counter, staring at some spot on the floor like he was trying to find the right place to put his eyes."Okay." He said again, quieter this time."I wanted to tell you tonight." I said. "

  • The Wife He Divorced Became A Billionaire Heiress    CHAPTER 122

Amelia's POVI sat there staring at the email for a solid five minutes before I actually clicked it.Not because I was trying to build suspense for myself. I just genuinely couldn't make my hand move. Every time I told myself to open it, some other part of my brain threw up a wall, like not knowing yet was somehow safer than actually finding out.Eventually I opened it, because sitting there frozen wasn't going to change what the results said either way.The email had a secure link, some portal I had to log into with a code they texted me separately. I fumbled through it, typed the code wrong the first time, my hands not quite steady enough to get it right on the first try.The second time worked. The page loaded slow enough that I had a few extra seconds of dread before the actual document came up. A PDF. Clinical, formal, full of percentages and probability language that took me a second to actually parse.‘Probability

  • The Wife He Divorced Became A Billionaire Heiress    CHAPTER 121

Amelia's POVAdrian called at seven. I let it ring twice before I picked up, mostly because I needed those extra few seconds to figure out what I was even going to say."Hey." I said."Hey." His voice was quiet. Not cold, exactly, but not his usual warmth either. "Can I come by?""Yeah. Of course."He showed up twenty minutes later, still in the clothes he'd probably thrown on the second he saw the headline, hair not properly combed, looking like a man who hadn't slept much the night before either.I let him in and we stood in my living room for a second, neither of us saying anything, the whole thing hanging there between us like something neither of us wanted to be the one to touch first."I saw the article." He said finally."I know.""Is it true?""Some of it." I said. "I'm pregnant. That part's true. The timing thing, I don't know yet. That's why I hadn't said anything."He nodded slowly, sitting down on the arm of my couch instead of the couch itself, like he wasn't sure yet whe

  • The Wife He Divorced Became A Billionaire Heiress    CHAPTER 120

Amelia's POVI didn't tell Lily right away. I know how that sounds, given she's the one who called it before I even took the test. But there's a difference between "I think I'm pregnant" and "I might be pregnant with my ex-husband's baby three weeks before I marry someone else." One of those is exciting news. The other one felt like something I needed to sit with alone first, just so I didn't fall apart in front of anyone.I lasted two days. She showed up at my apartment Thursday night with takeout and a bottle of sparkling cider, clearly assuming we'd be celebrating."Okay," she said, setting the bags down on my counter, "so are we doing gender guesses already or is that too soon?""Lily."Something in my voice must've given it away, because she stopped unpacking the food and just looked at me."What."I told her everything. The ultrasound. The measurements. The math I'd run about six different times hoping it would come out differently. By the time I finished, she sat down at my kit

  • The Wife He Divorced Became A Billionaire Heiress    CHAPTER 119

Amelia's POVI'd been throwing up for four mornings straight before I actually let myself think about what it meant.I told myself it was stress causing it. The wedding planning alone was enough to wreck anyone's stomach, caterers calling twice a day, Adrian's mother wanting input on flowers I didn't care about, Hart Global's board still adjusting to the idea that their president was about to become someone's wife again. Add the leftover exhaustion from Sophia's trial prep, and throwing up before breakfast felt almost reasonable.Lily didn't buy it for a second."You've been weird for two weeks." She said, dropping onto my office couch without asking. "Weird, tired. Weird pale. You didn't even finish your coffee yesterday, and you love that coffee more than most people.""I've had a lot going on.""Sure." She said, studying me. "When's the last time you had your period?"I opened my mouth to answer automatically, then stopped.I actually had to think about it."Oh, shit." I said quietl
