Chapter 6

Author: Against the Flow
As soon as Nathaniel and I stepped onto the island, we were greeted by a long line of men in black stretching for nearly a hundred yards, their figures as rigid and disciplined as a military unit.

I hesitated, glancing up at Nathaniel in confusion. He simply chuckled, leaning down to pinch my cheek with an affectionate smile before sweeping his arm out in a gentlemanly gesture, inviting me forward.

A ripple of shock ran through the assembled ranks. Their leader was the man rumored to be a ruthless, unfeeling mafia boss, a figure so terrifying that even federal agents approached him with caution. Yet, he had treated a woman with such gentle, almost reverent care.

Moreover, the woman was a small, frail-looking figure.

The entire line fell into a stunned, breathless silence, the air around us thick and heavy.

Nathaniel's voice cut through the tense quiet, each word deliberate and sharp. "From this moment onward, she's your mistress. Treat her as you would do me."

He paused, his eyes

Nathaniel had not returned yet. As I was preparing to sleep, I suddenly heard a loud crash."William!" I covered my mouth in shock as I recognized the man in black who had broken through the window.I said firmly, "What are you doing here again? I've made myself perfectly clear—I'm not leaving! I don't love you anymore!"William's face was tense with concentration, and I suddenly heard commotion from the buildings in the distance. I realized Nathaniel had finished his meeting and was heading back. The island was Nathaniel's sanctuary; if William were discovered there, he would surely die. I waved him away and solemnly said, "If you don't leave now, you're dead when Nathaniel returns!"This is Black Serpents' territory! You should know their methods and power!"Yet, William did not seem scared at all. Instead, he smiled with relief. "You're worried about me, Nina? I knew you still cared about me. Come on. Let's leave together!"He reached for my hand, but I cursed at him. "You're

I was breathing heavily with anger. Even William, who had been making excuses just moments ago, suddenly fell silent."Alright, you've hit me. You've said your piece. Now come home with me."I shouted, "Let go of me. I'm already married to someone else!"He let out a bitter, mocking laugh. "Don't lie to me. I won't believe it. No matter what you say, I'm not leaving without you tonight. I really can't live without you, Nina!"He pulled me closer, his grip tightening as if he could crush me into his very bones. I struggled desperately while he covered my mouth and forcefully pulled me.Someone heard the commotion and quickly approached. "Who's there?"William suddenly noticed the snake emblem on the newcomer's jacket. His body instantly went limp with extreme terror. "H—how are you connected to them?"I coldly spat in his face and said bitterly, "How is that any of your business?"I had been on the island for months. Even though I had not entirely pieced it together, I was no st

"Everything's been taken care of," Nathaniel's secretary whispered in his ear.Nathaniel extinguished his cigarette and let out a cold snort. "That woman didn't suffer enough. She got off too easy! What? William escaped? How could you let that happen?"He noticed I was disturbed by the noise and immediately lowered his voice. He said, "I'm having a meeting in the building across the way tonight. Would you mind waiting for me at home? I've had the staff prepare your favorite desserts."I nodded in response. Since arriving on the island, Nathaniel had the kitchen prepare different meals for me daily. It was surprising how this isolated island had such an abundance of resources. Even the jewelry and dresses he showered me with were limited editions, the latest designs from the best designers. After Nathaniel left, I wandered out to the garden, letting the salty sea breeze wash over my face. Suddenly, I heard strange noises coming from the shrubbery. In an instant, a filthy-faced man

By the time they reached the hospital, Emily's baby was already gone. She had fainted from the shock, and she was still unconscious.William paced outside the emergency room, his mind restless. He could not help but recall how smoothly his gang affairs had run when I was by his side, each piece perfectly in place, with no loose ends or chaos.A sharp, metallic scent hung in the air, snapping him out of his thoughts. He glanced down and noticed the hem of his shirt was stained with dried blood. Instinctively, he rubbed at it, but halfway through, he froze.Memories of me flooded back—how I used to prepare clean clothes for him whenever he returned home.William frowned deeply as the intense love he had forgotten suddenly flooded back into his heart. He murmured, "Nina, if only you were here... Where did you go?"William was overwhelmed by a surge of longing. Before he could fully process his sadness, a group of rival mobsters suddenly surrounded the hospital, armed with guns. Gunfi

"What did you say!?" William jumped up, grabbing Francis by the throat fiercely.Emily had not expected William to react so strongly and muttered, "How interesting. She'd rather run away than apologize. Look what your precious wife did! You've spoiled her rotten!"William's previous affection for Emily had vanished entirely. He turned to face her, glaring through gritted teeth and growled, "I'm glad you know that she's my real wife."Then, he put on his clothes and headed straight for the basement."Darling, don't go!" Emily's heart sank as she immediately jumped out of bed and grabbed William's arm, pleading desperately."Get off me!" He yanked his arm free, sending her sprawling to the floor. Ignoring her pained cries, he strode down the hallway, his steps echoing through the house. When he reached the basement, he kicked the door open, his heart sinking at the sight before him. Blood stained the concrete floor, pooling beneath the shattered glass window, the jagged edges hissi

"Does it hurt?" Nathaniel asked gently, cradling me in his arms, afraid of touching my wounds.Despite the surprising tenderness in his gaze as he looked at me, everyone around us kept their heads bowed. They seemed to be terrified of him."Thank you, Nathaniel," I whispered.I was genuinely grateful that he pulled me out of the abyss when I had nowhere else to turn. I remembered the lavish gift he had sent for my wedding all those years ago. He even told me that if I were ever unhappy, I should look back—he would always be there waiting for me.After all those years, he had kept that promise, never marrying."Nathaniel, I know how you feel about me. But you must know what I've been through," I murmured.Nathaniel nodded and quickly clarified, worried I might misunderstand. "I know everything you've experienced over the years, but I truly don't mind any of it. My feelings for you have never changed..."I shook my pale face weakly. "William isn't dead."Nathaniel was shocked.I

Just then, William returned home, opening the door to find a blood-covered Emily crying as she threw herself into his arms. She cried, "Help me!"William held her tightly, glaring at me on the stairs with fury."It wasn't me! She did it to herself!" I shouted."I'll always believe anything you say, because you're the woman I love most," he had once whispered. However, his angry shout yanked me back to reality. "Nina, how could you be so vicious?!"Countless words died in my throat. I was still foolishly clinging to the hope that he would believe me, but the truth was, he had abandoned me long ago.Why could I not face reality and force myself to see the truth? All our past love was a lie."She said I don't deserve to have a child or a husband. She's jealous of me, that's why she wanted to kill our baby!" Emily shouted.William's eyes flickered strangely at the word husband, but he quickly composed himself and called his private doctor to treat Emily. Then, he grabbed his gun a

There were two more days until my escape. I woke up in my room, my limbs heavy and aching."Mrs. Costello, you're awake," the butler, Francis Doyle, said as he entered, his voice tinged with concern. "The hospital brought you back just in time. Why did you run out into the rain alone?"I forced a bitter laugh, choosing not to explain. Just as I struggled to sit up, the door burst open, and William stumbled in, reeking of alcohol. He snarled, "Get out!"Francis immediately scurried out. William's bloodshot eyes locked onto mine, and before I could react, he lunged at me, knocking me back onto the bed."Don't touch me! You're in the wrong room!" I gasped, trying to push him away. However, my weakened body was no match for his strength. He pinned my wrists above my head, his lips crashing down on mine in a suffocating kiss. Pain shot through my body as he roughly handled me, and tears streamed down my face."I didn't get the wrong room, Nina. You're my wife," William growled as he y
