I didn’t cry that morning.

For the first time in eight years, I woke up beside Adrian without waiting for him to turn toward me. He slept with his back to me, breathing evenly, as if nothing in our lives had changed.

I watched him for a few seconds.

Once, I would have reached for his hand. That morning, I simply got out of bed.

My suitcase was already open on the floor. I packed a few dresses, my identification documents, and what little cash I had saved. My canvas tote went in last, along with my brown notebook and gold pen.

I left the jewelry Adrian had bought me. I left our wedding photograph, too.

I didn’t want anything that might tempt me to come back.

While checking beneath the bed, I found one of Sophie’s old shoes. It was tiny, with a faded pink bow on top.

I sat down, holding it in my palm.

I remembered Sophie as a baby, her warm cheek against my chest, her little fingers wrapped around mine. Back then, I’d thought loving her would be the easiest thing in the world.

My eyes stung.

“I tried, sweetheart,” I whispered. “I really did.”

I put the shoe back and zipped my suitcase.

Downstairs, Sophie was playing with her dollhouse while Margaret sat nearby, scrolling through her tablet. Margaret noticed my luggage almost immediately.

“Where do you think you’re going?”

“Somewhere else.”

She lowered her tablet. “Oh, don’t tell me you’re throwing another tantrum. Adrian has enough problems without dealing with your drama.”

I adjusted my grip on the suitcase handle.

“Don’t worry. I’m not asking him for anything anymore.”

For once, Margaret had nothing to say.

Sophie looked up from her toys. “Mommy, why do you have a suitcase?”

“I’m going away for a while, sweetheart.”

“Where?”

“I haven’t decided yet.”

She glanced at the dollhouse, then back at me. “Will you be back before Aunt Isabella visits?”

The question hurt more than I expected.

I crouched beside her. “Sophie, will you miss me?”

She fiddled with a tiny doll’s dress.

“I guess a little. But Aunt Isabella can still visit, right?”

I swallowed the lump in my throat.

“Of course she can.”

Sophie smiled and returned to playing.

I waited a moment, foolishly hoping she might change her mind and throw her arms around me.

She didn’t.

I stood, picked up my suitcase, and headed for the door.

Part of me still expected Adrian to appear on the stairs. I imagined him asking where I was going, or at least wondering why I was leaving without saying goodbye.

But the staircase stayed empty.

Outside, I took out my phone and typed a message.

“Adrian, I’m leaving. I need time away from this house. Please don’t look for me.”

My thumb hovered over the screen. I almost added that I was sorry, though I wasn’t even sure what I’d be apologizing for.

In the end, I sent the message and switched off my phone.

The morning air was cold. I had no real destination, and my savings wouldn’t last forever. My body had been feeling weaker lately, too, and I didn’t know what would happen if my condition worsened while I was alone.

But I couldn’t spend whatever time I had left begging to matter.

I walked until I reached a small flower shop. Through the window, I saw a little girl choosing yellow flowers with her father. He bent down to listen to her excited chatter before kissing her forehead.

I looked away.

All I’d wanted was a husband who listened and a daughter who wanted me around. A home where I didn’t have to prove I deserved a place.

Was that really so much to ask?

I pulled out my notebook and wrote a few lines beneath my unfinished story.

Maybe leaving doesn’t mean you’ve stopped loving someone. Maybe it means you’re tired of losing yourself trying to make them love you back.

I closed the notebook and stepped off the curb.

A horn blared.

I turned, but the car was already too close.

The impact knocked me sideways. My suitcase slid across the road, spilling clothes and books onto the pavement. Pain shot through my body, and I struggled to draw a full breath.

“Miss! Can you hear me?”

A man dropped beside me. His hands hovered uncertainly, as though he was afraid moving me might make things worse.

Then his eyes fell on the silver pendant at my neck.

He went completely still.

“No,” he whispered.

He leaned closer, staring at my face. His expression shifted from disbelief to something that looked almost like fear.

“Clara?”

I tried to focus on him. “How do you know my name?”

He turned sharply toward someone nearby.

“Call an ambulance! Now!”

Then he took out his phone, his voice shaking as he spoke.

“I found her. Get the car ready and call our family doctor. Tell my parents we found her.”

He looked down at me again. Tears gathered in his eyes.

“We've been looking for you for years,” he said, gently taking my hand. “Please, just hold on.”

I wanted to ask him who he was. I wanted to know why he looked at me as if I were someone he’d lost long ago.

But the edges of my vision had begun to darken.

His grip tightened around my hand.

“Hang on, little sister,” he whispered. “I’ve found you.”

Then everything went black.

Daniel’s POVThe former employee agreed to meet us at ten in the morning.By nine forty-five, I was already sitting inside the conference room, reviewing the documents our legal team had gathered. Three copies of the old inventory lay beside my notebook. I had read them so many times that I could almost recite every line.Still, none of them told us who had controlled MC-04.That was the problem with old secrets. The people who buried them rarely left a clean trail. My phone rang.“Sir, the visitor has arrived,” our legal assistant said. “But there's something you should know. He asked whether Clara Montecillo would be attending.”I looked up from the papers.“What did you tell him?”“Only that the meeting was arranged by our legal team. I haven't given him any other information.”“Good. Bring him in.”A moment later, the door opened. The man who entered looked to be in his late fifties. He wore a plain gray shirt beneath a dark jacket and carried a worn leather folder. His eyes moved

Clara’s POVThe envelope was waiting for me when I returned to my room. There was no letter, no message from Adrian, and no explanation. Just a drawing inside.I recognized Sophie’s handwriting immediately. The picture showed a house beneath a crooked tree. Three people stood in front of it. Sophie had drawn herself in the middle, Adrian beside her, and me on the other side wearing a blue dress.Above my figure, she had written one word.Mommy.My fingers trembled around the paper.“Oh, Sophie…”I sat on the edge of the bed, but the tears came before I could stop them. I pressed the drawing against my chest, wishing for one impossible moment that I could hold her instead.I missed her bedtime stories, her small arms around my waist, and the way she used to call for me whenever she had a bad dream.I had left that house because staying there was breaking me. But knowing why I had left didn't make missing my daughter any easier.“I miss you too, sweetheart,” I whispered. The room remain

Adrian’s POV"Daddy, can you send this to Mommy?"Sophie stood beside my desk, holding a folded piece of paper with both hands. There was a smudge of blue crayon on her cheek. Her school uniform was untucked on one side, and she kept rubbing the corner of the paper with her thumb.I put down my phone."What is it, sweetheart?""My family drawing."She handed it to me, then quickly added, "Please don't lose it.""I won't."I unfolded the paper carefully. There was a house, three people, and a tree that looked more like a green cloud. Sophie had drawn herself in the middle. I stood on one side, and Clara stood on the other, wearing a blue dress.Above Clara's head, Sophie had written Mommy in uneven letters.I stared at it longer than I meant to."Do you think she'll like it?" Sophie asked."I think she'll be happy to know you made it for her.""Will she come back after she sees it?"The question caught me off guard.I could have given her the answer she wanted. I could have told her th

Sophie's POVI used to think grownups knew how to fix everything. When my toys broke, Daddy bought new ones. When I got sick, Grandma called the doctor. When I was afraid of the dark, someone always left the hallway light on.So when Mommy disappeared, I thought Daddy would bring her home.He didn't.At first, I asked him every morning."Did Mommy call?"Sometimes Daddy shook his head. Other times, he looked at his phone before answering."No, sweetheart."After a while, I stopped asking every day.It hurt less to pretend I wasn't waiting. That morning, my teacher gave us a sheet of paper and asked us to draw our families. Everyone around me started drawing houses, pets, and people holding hands.I drew Daddy first. Then I drew myself beside him.My pencil stopped when I reached the empty space on the other side. That was where Mommy used to stand.I remembered the last picture I'd made at home before she left. I had drawn Daddy, myself, Isabella, and the baby inside her tummy.I hadn

Clara’s POVI barely slept the night Daniel sent me the inventory page."Correspondence materials received. Access restricted by client instruction."Seven words had kept me awake for hours.Someone had received documents the day after the ledger was supposedly transferred. Someone had ordered them restricted. Yet every surviving record seemed to stop just before revealing who had given the order.By nine the next morning, Daniel arrived at the estate with two members of our legal team."We're going to inspect the original building records," he told me. "The current owner has agreed to give us access, but we won't remove anything without proper documentation.""Good. I don't want anyone accusing us of changing the evidence."Daniel gave me a brief smile. "You're learning to think like a lawyer.""I'm learning not to trust a document just because someone says it's genuine.""That, unfortunately, is an excellent lesson."We drove to the former administrative company's building, now an a

Margaret’s POVI knew the past would eventually return to haunt us.I simply hadn't expected it to begin with a question from my own son."Mother, do you remember a private administrative company that handled confidential documents for Ashford Holdings eighteen years ago?"Adrian stood across from my desk, waiting for an answer.I kept my expression composed as I closed the folder in front of me."Your father worked with dozens of companies. Why are you asking about one from eighteen years ago?""Because Daniel found a record connected to Clara's disappearance."My fingers tightened around the edge of the folder.Clara.Even after all these years, that name had a way of disturbing the order I tried so hard to maintain."What kind of record?""A correspondence ledger was transferred to a private address instead of the executive office, as the surviving documents claimed. The company that operated there handled confidential materials for wealthy clients."Adrian watched me carefully."D
