We sat in the car after the call. The words still rang in my head. My real mother was alive. She was waiting at the old house. And she was not alone.

Damien looked at me. His face was tired but his eyes stayed sharp. “We go,” he said. “No more waiting around.”

I nodded. My hands felt cold. We had the kids safe with his men for now. That was the only thing keeping me from falling apart.

That was the only thing keeping me from falling apart. We drove fast. The old house sat quiet when we pulled up. Lights were on inside. Two cars were parked out front.Damien stopped the car a little ways back. We got out and walked toward the door. My heart beat hard in my chest. We stepped inside. She was sitting in the living room. My real mother. She looked older than I remembered from the old photos. Her hair was gray at the sides. She had a gun on the table next to her.She smiled when she saw us. It was small and sad.“You came,” she said. Her voice was soft. “I did not think you would after everything.”Damien kept his gun up. I stayed close to him.

Chapter 83The woman kept the gun pressed against my back. I could feel her breathing steady behind me. Liam and Rose stood frozen a few feet away. Their eyes stayed locked on mine.Cars pulled up fast on both sides of the bridge. Doors opened. Men stepped out with guns raised. Some of them were Damien’s. Others I didn’t recognize. She spoke low near my ear. “One wrong move and they all die.”I stayed still. My heart pounded hard.Damien stepped out from one of the cars. He had his gun up but didn’t fire. His eyes found mine right away.“Let her go,” he said. His voice carried across the bridge. The woman laughed once. “You’re in no position to give orders.”She nodded at one of her men. He grabbed Liam and pulled him closer to the edge of the bridge.Rose started crying.I felt my stomach drop.Damien took one step forward. “Don’t.”The woman tightened her grip on me. “Tell your men to drop their weapons. All of them. Or the boy goes over.”Damien looked at his people and gave a smal

We drove through the dark with the deadline hanging over us. Dawn was coming fast. Victoria was with that woman. I kept seeing her face in my head, tied up and alone.Damien gripped the wheel tight. “We hit them hard and fast. No talking. No deals.”I nodded. My shoulder still hurt but I pushed it aside. We had to reach her before it was too late.We pulled up near the location from the message. An old house on the edge of the woods. Lights were on inside. Two cars sat out front.Damien stopped the car and turned to me. “Stay low until I clear the way.”I shook my head. “I’m coming with you.”He didn’t argue this time. We got out and moved toward the house quiet and fast. His men spread out around the property. We slipped through a side door. The inside smelled like old wood and smoke. Voices came from the main room.We moved closer.Victoria sat tied to a chair in the center. The woman stood in front of her holding a gun. Two men guarded the doors. The woman looked up as if she sense

We read the message in silence. The old house. Sunrise. Both of us.Damien turned the car around without a word. His face stayed hard. I stared out the window and tried to steady my breathing. My shoulder throbbed but I pushed it down. The kids were safe for now with his men. That was the only thing keeping me steady. We drove through the dark. Neither of us spoke much. Every mile felt like we were walking straight into another trap. When we reached the house the gates were open. Lights glowed from inside. Damien parked a short distance back and we got out.He looked at me. “Stay close.”We walked up the long driveway. My heart beat harder with every step. The front door stood open.We stepped inside. The main room was empty at first. Then she appeared from the hallway. The woman who had raised Damien. She held the drive in one hand and a gun in the other. She smiled when she saw us.“You actually came,” she said. “I have to admit I thought you might run instead.”Damien kept his gun

Chapter 80We stared at the message. My mother had the kids. Again. I felt the air leave my lungs.Damien paced the hospital room. His hands stayed in fists. “She was supposed to be dead. We saw her fall.”I sat up even though my shoulder screamed. “She’s not. And she has Liam and Rose.”He stopped moving and looked at me. His eyes were dark. “We go after her tonight. No more waiting.”I nodded. The pain in my side didn’t matter anymore. Nothing did except getting our children back.He made calls fast. Marcus. His remaining men. Anyone who could help. I listened while he gave orders. His voice stayed steady but I could hear the anger underneath. When he hung up he came back to the bed. “We have a location. An old estate outside the city. She’s holding them there.”I swung my legs over the side of the bed. “Then let’s go.”He helped me stand. The room spun a little but I stayed on my feet. We walked out together. No one tried to stop us.We drove in silence at first. The city lights bl

Pain exploded in my shoulder. I hit the ground hard. Everything blurred for a second. Liam and Rose screamed my name.I tried to move but my arm wouldn’t work right. Blood spread across my shirt. The partner stood over me with his gun still raised. He smiled. “You should have stayed down.”Before he could shoot again shots came from behind him. He dropped fast. One of Damien’s men stood in the doorway breathing hard.Damien ran in right after. He dropped to his knees beside me.“Stay with me,” he said. His voice sounded rough. He pressed his hand against my shoulder to stop the bleeding.I looked at the kids. They were crying but okay. Liam helped Rose stand.“We have to move,” Damien said. He pulled me up even though it hurt like hell.We ran toward the back door. More of his men covered us as we went. The night air hit my face cold and sharp. We made it to the cars. Damien got me in the back with the kids. He climbed in front and started driving fast.My shoulder throbbed with every
