We stood there staring at the black screen. The plane was gone. Liam and Rose were gone with it.

Damien slammed his hand against the wall. The sound made me jump.

“They took them,” he said. His voice was low and rough. “They actually took them.”

I felt like I couldn’t move. My legs were shaking. I kept seeing Liam’s face in that last video. He looked so scared.

My sister was still in the room with us. She hadn’t said anything since we got back. She just stood near the door watching everything.

My eyes felt heavy. The room spun slowly. I tried to push the man away but my arms would not move right. His face stayed close. That same cold smile.“Stay awake a little longer,” he said. His voice sounded low and smooth. “I want you to see this.”Tears ran down my face. I thought about Damien driving away. He left us here. Alone with this monster. Pain filled my chest more than the wound in my shoulder.“Please,” I whispered. “Not the children. Take me instead.”He laughed quietly. The sound made my skin crawl.“You still beg. Even now. Your mother taught you nothing.”He looked at Liam and Rose. They slept deeply from the medicine the real nurses gave them. Their small faces looked peaceful. I wanted to scream and wake them. I wanted to grab them and run. But my body felt like stone. The man pressed the syringe harder against my neck. Cold liquid touched my skin.“This will make you sleep,” he said. “When you wake you will be far from here. And the children will learn who their rea

We sat in the back of an ambulance. Lights flashed around us. A doctor pressed bandages on my shoulder. Another one worked on Damien’s leg. He stayed quiet the whole time. His face looked empty.Victoria stood nearby. She spoke with officers and pointed toward the road. The black car had disappeared fast. No one knew which way it went.I watched the children in another vehicle. They drank water and held blankets tight. Their eyes kept searching for me.“We need to move,” Damien said suddenly. “He will come back for them.”The doctor shook his head.“You lost too much blood. Both of you. Hospital first.”Damien tried to stand anyway. He almost fell. I caught his arm and helped him sit again.“He has the files,” I said. “He can destroy us from anywhere now.”Victoria walked over. Her face showed worry.“My team is tracking the car. We will find him. For now you rest.”She looked at me longer than usual.“You did good back there. I did not think you had it in you.”I did not answer. My m

I tried to stand but my legs would not work. Blood ran down my arm from the shot in my shoulder. Damien held my hand tighter. His face looked pale and wet with sweat. His father stepped closer. The old man looked strong. Not sick. Not dead. His eyes moved over us like we were nothing.“You planned all of this,” Damien said. His voice came out weak but full of hate. His father smiled.“Of course I did. Your mother, her mother, the switched child, the drive. Every piece. I needed you two to fight each other until the end. It made you weak. It made you easy to control.”He looked at the kids. Liam and Rose stood by the door crying. One of the men grabbed them and held them back.“No,” I said. My voice broke. “Leave them alone.”The old man laughed once.“They are the future Lila. My future. One of them carries the real bloodline. The other is just extra. I will decide which one stays.”Damien tried to push himself up. Blood poured faster from his leg.“Father stop this,” he said. “Take w

I took another step. My hands stayed open at my sides so she could see I had no weapon.“Stop,” the sister said. Her voice stayed calm but her finger looked tight on the trigger. “One more move and he dies right here.”Damien looked up at me. Blood kept running down his arm onto the dirty floor. His face showed pain but his eyes stayed cold.“Go back to the car Lila,” he said. “Do not make this worse.”I shook my head. Tears burned my cheeks.“I will not leave you,” I said. “Not like this.”The sister smiled a little.“You still think he loves you? Look at him. He would have let me shoot you back at the house if it saved the kids. He only came here for the drive. Not for you.”Her words hurt but I kept my eyes on Damien.“Tell me what to do,” I whispered to him. Before he could answer one of the side doors opened fast. Two men rushed in. They were not hers. They wore dark clothes and carried guns. Damien’s men I think.Shots filled the room. Loud and sharp. The sister turned quick and

We drove through the night. The kids slept in the back again. Their breathing was the only sound besides the road under the tires. Damien kept his eyes straight ahead. His jaw stayed tight. He did not look at me once.I wanted to say something. Anything. But the words felt stuck in my throat. Every time I tried to speak my mind went back to the gun he pointed at me. The way he said he was sorry before he pulled the trigger. The way he told me to stay with her. After a long time he pulled the car off the road near some trees. He turned off the engine. The quiet felt heavy.“We stop here for now,” he said. “The kids need rest. I need to think.”He got out and opened the back door. He lifted Liam first then Rose. They barely woke up. He carried them to a small clearing and laid them on blankets from the trunk. I followed and helped cover them. When they were settled Damien walked a few steps away. He lit a cigarette. I had not seen him smoke in years.I stood near him. The air was cold.

The gun clicked empty. Damien lowered it slowly, like he’d never meant to pull the trigger in the first place. My mother stared at him, actually surprised for once in her life. Then he swung the barrel toward her and fired. One shot, right in the chest. She stumbled back, eyes wide, and crumpled. Blood bloomed across her shirt fast, too fast. She looked at me…just once…then went still.Damien let the gun fall from his hand. It clattered on the floor. When he turned to me, his face was like stone.“You should’ve stayed with her when she gave you the chance,” he said quietly. “Maybe the kids would still be safe.”The words landed like a punch. I didn’t say anything. Liam and Rose were still tied to those chairs, terrified. He cut them loose and they ran straight into my arms. I held them tight, but my eyes never left him.He walked over to my sister.“Where’s the rest of the drive?” he asked. She glanced at our mother’s body on the floor. “Already gone. She sent it before you got here.
