The photo burned into my screen. Liam and Rose sat somewhere I didn’t know. Scared. Alone again.

Damien grabbed the phone and stared at it. His face went hard fast.

“They took them back,” he said. His voice came out low and sharp.

I felt like someone had punched me in the chest. We had just gotten them out. Now they were gone again.

He started making calls right away. Marcus. His men. Anyone who could help. I stood there trying to breathe through the panic rising in my throat.

His voice came out low and sharp.I felt like someone had punched me in the chest. We had just gotten them out. Now they were gone again. He started making calls right away. Marcus. His men. Anyone who could help. I stood there trying to breathe through the panic rising in my throat.“We need to find where this photo came from,” he said after hanging up. “Marcus is tracking it now.”I nodded but my mind kept showing me their faces in that picture. Liam trying to stay brave. Rose looking small and lost.My phone buzzed again.Another message. This one had an address.Damien looked at it then at me.“We go,” he said.We drove fast. The city turned into empty roads. Neither of us spoke much. Every minute felt like we were losing more time. When we reached the address it was an old warehouse nea

The message stayed on the screen. I read it twice before I could move. Damien stood frozen next to me. His face had gone pale.We looked at each other. Neither of us spoke at first. The words from my mother still hung in the air. You’re his too. Your real father was Damien’s father.I felt like the floor had dropped out from under me. Everything I thought I knew about my life just broke apart.Damien stepped back like he needed space. He ran a hand over his face.“This can’t be real,” he said. His voice came out rough.I wanted to say the same thing but the look on my mother’s face before she died told me it was. She had no reason to lie at the end.Liam and Rose were still in the other room with one of Damien’s men. They didn’t know yet. I didn’t want them to know.Damien looked at me again. His eyes were full of something I couldn’t name. Pain. Confusion. Something darker.“All these years,” he said. “Everything we went through. And now this.”I didn’t know what to say. My throat fe

We stared at the message. The address glowed on the screen. My hands shook as I read it again.Damien took the phone from me. “We're going there now.”We started running. The road felt endless. Liam and Rose stayed close, quiet but scared. Every sound in the dark made me jump.We reached the place after what felt like hours. It was an old house at the end of a dirt road. Lights were on inside. A car sat out front.Damien stopped us behind some trees. He looked at the house then back at me.“Stay here with the kids,” he said. “I’ll check it first.”I shook my head. “We go together.”He didn’t argue. We moved slowly toward the house. My heart beat hard in my chest. I kept one hand on each of the kids. The front door was open a little. We stepped inside. The living room was empty. Then I heard a sound from the back.We followed it.In the kitchen Liam and Rose from the message sat tied to chairs. My mother stood behind them with a gun. She smiled when she saw us.“You made it,” she said.

The dark swallowed everything. I felt the hand on my arm pull hard. I grabbed Liam and Rose and moved with it. Another shot went off somewhere close. Damien shouted my name but I couldn’t see him.We ran blind toward what I hoped was the door. My side burned. Liam tripped once but I kept him up. Rose stayed quiet, just clinging to my shirt. We burst outside into cold air. The hand let go of my arm. I turned fast, ready to fight. It was Marcus. He looked at me, breathing hard. “Move. They’re coming around the side.”Before I could answer Damien came out behind us. He had his gun up. He looked between me and Marcus.“You,” he said. His voice was low and angry. “You set this up.”Marcus shook his head. “I changed my mind. I’m done with them. But we have to go now.”Shots started coming from inside the building. We ran toward the car. Damien pushed me and the kids in first then got behind the wheel. Marcus jumped in the passenger seat.We sped away. My heart wouldn’t slow down. Liam was s

We drove through the dark with the drive still in my pocket. Victoria’s blood was on my hands. I kept seeing her face when she told us to run. Damien stayed quiet but his jaw stayed tight the whole way.The address led us to an old building near the water. It looked empty from the outside. We parked a block away and walked the rest of the way on foot. My side pulled with every step but I kept moving. We reached the door and stopped.Damien looked at me. “Stay behind me.”I nodded. He pushed the door open slow. Inside it was dark and cold. We stepped in together. At the far end of the room the kids sat on the floor. Liam had his arm around Rose. Both of them looked up when they saw us. Rose started crying the second she spotted me.I ran to them and pulled them into my arms. Liam held on tight. Rose buried her face in my shirt.Damien stayed standing with his gun up. He scanned the room.A voice came from the shadows.“You actually came.”The woman stepped out. The one who pretended to

We ran to the car without saying much. The photo of Victoria standing in our doorway with that gun stayed burned in my head. Damien drove faster than before. His hands stayed tight on the wheel.I kept checking the photo on my phone like it might change. She looked calm. Too calm. Like she knew we would come. When we pulled up to the house the front door was still open. Lights were on inside. Damien stopped the car a little ways back and we got out slow.He pulled out his gun. I stayed close behind him as we moved toward the door. My side still hurt but I pushed it down.We stepped inside. The living room looked normal at first. Then I saw her.Victoria stood in the middle of the room. The gun hung loose in her hand. She turned when she heard us.“You came,” she said. Her voice sounded off. Tired but steady.Damien kept his gun up. “What are you doing here?”She looked at both of us. Something in her eyes looked broken.“I had to come,” she said. “They let me out of the hospital. I he
